"and... exhale" Panthers' Smith's finger not broken
What first was reported as 'Steve Smith carted off' became 'Smith carted off with head inujry' which then became 'Smith carted off with finger injury- needs x-rays' and now the Gaston Gazette's Steve Reed is reporting that the all-pro WR does not have a break in his finger.
Twitter went crazy, my phone was getting blown up with texts... but at this point we should probably be accustomed to any word of injury being immediately perceived as season ending; unfortunately this has become the MO for the Panthers in recent years.
More notes from camp after the jump
I don't plan to regurgitate Reed's piece, but rather give some opinions on what he wrote.
- It's extremely disheartening that both Everette Brown and Brandon LaFell have become the odd men out in their respective rotations. This was the time for both players to win their jobs and fight for starting spots, but instead they are being beaten soundly by other players. From what we can ascertain Brown has the drive, but not the consistency while Rivera has questioned LaFell's drive at the WR position.
- Nobody really knows what this season holds, but there is no way it's going to be boring. Between wildcat packages, shovel passes and everything else we're hearing from camp it will be an astounding interesting season to say the least.
- I like the idea of Jimmy and Cam both seeing live fire with the 1st team in camp. As always, watch for whoever starts game three... because they'll likely start week one. I sincerely hope Clausen and Cam both light it up so we could potentially bait a trade.
- The Geoff Schwartz injury is very disheartening, and I hope the doctors don't find anything wrong with his hip. I don't know if I can stomach another season with Mackenzey Bernardeau at RG; he's a nice guy, but the weakest part of the OL.

Someone get me a couple fingers (pun intended) of Glenlivet
And stop making over dramatic headlines like “STEVE SMITH CARTED OFF”
This comment section has officially been Tater'd.
yeah carted was misleading
he walked off the field and then rode a cart inside. “carted” has a connotation of “can’t walk so he had to ride” so that didn’t communicate well

I REALLY like LaFell the person, and his skill set as a player.
I don’t know what the problem is, but I think they’ll regret it if they let him go. If Schwartz is out, we HAVE to get someone else in at RG. The proof is in the tape, he just can’t do it.

Yeah.
It didn’t work. I’d rather try Ziemba at RG.
Or, let Bernie play LG (like he did, service-ably, in ‘09) and move Travelle to RG…Bernie just can’t handle the speed rushes from the under tackles on the right side. He’s better at doubling the nose or finding the MLB or WLB on the second level.

comment came from BL and DG getting called out re not being prepared for camp, and general suspicions that BL’s work ethic/heart is not as strong as some of the other WRs. plus while he was out with the hammy other WRs played well in his absence, making some wonder if he might be the odd man out
but he’s currently #2 on the 1st depth chart, so there’s nothing out there to suggest he will be cut or traded

In reference to the week 3 bullet point:
Rivera, in an interview, stated they would do week 3 like a regular game preparation. Regular season-style practice, preparation, game tape, etc. I think that means we’ll be guaranteed to know who the starter is in WK3.
I like this move by Rivera
Having the team go into Regular Season Game mode then will show who is ready and who is not. Good move.
As far who is starting, that should be all wrapped up by the end of game two, except for at WR and QB. WR, because we are extremely young and the coachs need to be absolutely certain on who to cut, keep, and play. As far as QB, be prepared to watch as Rivera, Chud, and Shula all make Jimmy and Cam prove why they should be the starter. It could get brutal.

No comments about how Cam needs to be more consistent?
After I saw that quote from Rivera, I thought I would check in to see if anyone was making comments about this. I guess Rivera isn’t wearing the same special glasses that everyone here wears when viewing Cam.
Just in case people missed it, Joe Person from the CO tweeted these two messages while at practice today.
- Edwards goes down to make nice catch of another low throw from Newton. Pattern?
- Steve Smith gets up gingerly after going down to the ground to try to catch low pass from Newton.
This is why Newton shouldn’t start the season and this is why I said yesterday that he can’t complete a 7 yard pass. He’s already responsible for getting Smitty hurt. What happens when he forces a receiver to go up and get a ball in traffic when the other team is trying to take their head off?
Dude, the glasses line is getting tired.
Do you really want to start this again? I don’t have the energy.

I will offer one comment on the matter.
He is going to work to improve his consistency, I’m sure of it.
But we don’t really need to sit here and argue about who should be the starter, because Newton IS going to be the starter. He is the future of our franchise, not Jimmy Clausen. Embrace him and this team or start a JC fan club. That’s harsh, I know, but I’m tired of talking about Jimmy Clausen. He had his window and he blew it.

I agree with you...
on the fact that Cam is the future. I just don’t want to see him starting day one. Right now, JC is showing that he’s a more consistent QB in practice. If that translates into the PreSeason, then he should start.
JC didn’t have a real chance last year. Had Cam been around last year or just about any other rookie QB, there’s no way they would have been successful on that team with that coaching staff. JR came out and said today that Fox and company did very little, if anything, to help JC and AE out last year as rookies. I would hardly call that having an opportunity. Cam is a project and starting him from day 1 won’t be helping him, this team and certainly not his receivers.
Fox was a bad coach in the sense that he had no interest in developing young talent. That is the only thing that was proven last year when JC had his window.
I understand all that.
But its not as if Fox ran on the field and tackled Jimmy. Jimmy just didn’t show us enough to give us (or the organization) any hope. I’ve watched every game from last season three, four, five times, and the QB play was painful to watch. He gave zero indications that he is going to be successful moving forward.
And even with the errant throws, didn’t you see PantherRoar’s comment yesterday where he complied their QB rating from Fanfest? It was 80 to 115 in favor of Cam, because he gets the offense into the endzone, which is the goal of every offense—not to be “consistent” or “efficient” or any other euphemisms we want to use to obscure Jimmy’s deficiencies.

The whole offense looked bad last year
It’s not like we were an offensive juggernaut when Moore was broken in half and Jimmy came in to play. None of the QBs played well last year.
Besides, I’m not basing anything that I’ve said on anything that happened last year. I’ve only said that JC looks more consistent in the videos and apparently in practice than does Cam. It’s a new year, a new team, a new coaching staff and a new system. Basing this decision on what happened last year when the coach was phoning it in isn’t the way to go.
You don't think the new coaching staff evaluated the tape from last season when making vitally important decisions about the future of this franchise.
You can’t brush it under the rug, dude. It happened, and he was awful.
Does he get a fresh start? Yes. Do I want him to be successful? Yes. But in no way shape or form is he a better option to start. Not now not ever.
And this consistency point…I prefer to score. I prefer to not turn the ball over. Jimmy threw interceptions in both the 11 on 11 drills and the 7 on 7s. Cam did not throw a single interceptions. The offense, led by Jimmy, scored three TDs. While Cam was in, they scored seven. Wake up.

I didn't say he wasn't awful.
He was. And so was every other QB that started last year. Cam would have been too in that offense.
It’s my understanding that Rivera is giving everyone a clean slate, probably at the direction of JR, and they earn their position by what they do in practice and during games while he’s the coach.
While cams completion percent was low...
His total yards, yards per completion, and total touchdown were high. TDs are clearly the goal, not a hi completion percentage of 2 yard passes to our RBs.

People who are unhappy tend to turn hateful towards something or another. I'm not even sure that the problem was developing the young talent..
I think the reason Jimmy is showing improvement this year is because the coaching staff is not afraid to change the playing style to meet his strengths. We knew since last year that he didn’t have a great deep arm, but Like the letter from JR said, he was dropped into a system that worked fine for Delhome….but didn’t mesh with Jimmy’s playing style.

I normally don't even reply to an asinine post like this - - - - but
in my humble opinion you don’t know your a** from first base. Come on – - – get real !!!!
Jim
How is that asinine?
I’ll say it slowly. The Head Coach…….said that JC……was more consistent…..than Cam was.
I’m basing all my comments on what I saw in the videos posted yesterday, and on what’s being reported from camp.
I heard on FNZ this morning that last week Cam had a practice where he threw 13 incompletions out of 14 passes during one stretch of practice. Please tell me how it’s asinine to say that the guy who had a stretch like that shouldn’t start the season off as the #1 QB?
Nothing has happened this year that suggests that Cam should start over JC other than the fact that Cam was drafted #1. He’s shown glimpses of what he can be in the future, but that says nothing as to what he will be if we trot him out one week one under center.
No he didn't say that exactly.
He said that Cam needs to become more consistent. He did not talk about Jimmy while answering the same question. You are hearing what you want to.

I paraphrased
JC was praised for having a good practice. Rivera mentioned that Cam needed to be more consistent. I assume that since he was praised that he was consistent.
Which is higher up on your agenda Joesph...
Hating on Cam Newton, or wanting the Panthers to win? If you really think that Jimmy Clausen gives the panthers a better chance to win week 1, then you need to get your head examined. Clausen has been excellent at those little check down passes and quick slants, but he does not bring the X-factor that Cam brings, plain and simple.
by TBW on Aug 9, 2011 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions
Winning, of course
Me saying that Cam isn’t ready to start week one has nothing to do with me hating on him. I’m just going on what I’ve seen and read. The guy makes big plays and then he makes really bad plays. If you have a good running game (check) and a pretty good defense (check) then you have a chance to be in most games. That is unless you have someone turning the ball over or making bad plays. Clausen isn’t going to light it up, but if he’s moving the offense and giving us chances to put points on the board, I could really care less how those points make it up on the board. If the QB throws 50 TDs or 5, as long as we win.
Also, to get back to my “quote” from yesterday, I knew I had heard this somewhere. Here is a direct quote from Carolina Growl.
“Rivera said Clausen was more consistent than Newton during Tuesday’s practice and that the No. 1 overall pick might need a little tweaking on his mechanics.”
It goes on to say that a lot of Cam’s issues are a result of poor mechanics. All I have ever been an advocate of is letting JC start the season while Cam works on this stuff so that when he does start, he and the team will be successful. I’ve said it, and I’ll keep saying it.
good point
Just because you like jimmy to start doesn’t mean you hate cam.
But… jimmy threw 3x more interceptions than TDs last year with a 1-9 record and a 50something qb rating. So…
by Panthster on Aug 10, 2011 12:28 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I've never said Jimmy played well last year
I’ve only said that from what I have seen and from what I have read, he has been more consistent than Cam. Plus, I don’t think we should read too much into anything that anybody did last year. Very few people played up to their potential under the horrible lame duck coaching staff that we had here last season. Not to mention that the new coaches seem to be going more by what is happening now rather than last year. To steal another quote from Scott Reader’s articles…
"In all honesty, everybody is getting another opportunity here," Rivera said. "This is a situation where we came in and didn’t want to have any assumptions about anybody’s abilities or their circumstances. It’s a chance for us and for everybody to start fresh. So I think more so than anything else it’s an opportunity to see what these guys are about."
This was in reference to the DT position, but I assume that it is how they are treating all the position battles.
Lastly, I don’t hate Cam and I’m not angry. I just don’t want to see a guy get thrown in before he’s ready. If anything, that’s what we can take from JC playing like crap last year. He still isn’t really ready to be a good QB in this league, but I think we stand a better chance Week 1 with him under center than Cam. If I had my way about it, neither would start to begin with and Mark Bulger would be under center, but nobody asked me. That would give them both time to develop.
Ya
I just meant that Jimmeh was epic in his badness last year. I agree with starting him over Cam tho. I think Cam is way better, but needs a bit of a buffer which, I agree with you, Jimmy never got. Jimmy can be Cams buffer. It always takes awhile for our O-line to solidify, so whoever starts will have less protection at the beginning of the season. This plays to Jimmy’s tendency to throw to his RBs out of the backfield which is a high completion / low yardage throw. Then when the O-line warms up and we are sick of Jimmeh’s lack of production, bam, we throw in Cam. Hopefully, he will be ready.
Mark Bulger's QB rating his last three seasons as a starter was a 70.
Not too far ahead of what we had with the Jimmeh last season.
The guy retired. That tells me he is done. To me, watching him in STL those last few years, he should have retired three years ago.
What better way to get Cam acclimated to the NFL than to play him. He was not drafted where he was drafted to sit behind an uninspired Mark Bulger or a scared Jimmy Clausen. Delaying the inevitable is just counter-productive to the franchise. We need to find out if Cam can play. He is only on a four year contract, too. So we need to squeeze every ounce of Cammy Cam Juice out of him (no homo) before he has the option to go elsewhere.

I liked Mark Bulger for two reasons
I thought if he came in and started the whole year, we’d have a chance to go to the playoffs as a wild card.
I also think he was the best choice of vets out there to come in and help tutor the young guys. DA isn’t even getting the chance to participate, much less start. That may change as TC and the Preseason progress, but it seems pretty clear that it’s Cam or JC. DA is only here because he played under Chud for a year. It has nothing to do with current or even past abilities.
There are very few QB’s that are drafted #1, or anywhere really, that are ready to start from day 1. Cam doesn’t have the mechanics to be successful right away. Everyone thinks I’m hating on him by saying he shouldn’t start right away, but I’m really wanting him to be good and I think starting him out of the gate will be counter productive. If he sits and watches for the first half of the season, works on his mechanics and then plays the last half of the season, he stands a much better chance to develop into a franchise QB. Besides, if he starts right away and then struggles, we’ll be right back here next year with all of you guys saying how bad he sucks and calling for AL to start week 1, 2012.
Show me a QB in the last 13 years who was drafted #1 overall but DIDN'T start from day one.

Yeah. That’s what I thought.
I couldn’t disagree more with your assessment. Cam gives us the best chance to win. Period.

And only 2 of the guys since 1998 came even close to a winning record as a started their first year. This may be the most compelling evidence yet.
Sam Bradford – 7-9 Started every game. Weak division but a solid QB.
M. stafford – 2-8. Started from week 1.
J. Russell – 0-1 Didn’t start week one.
A. Smith 2-5. Didn’t start week one.
Eli Manning 1-6. Didn’t start week one.
Carson Palmer 0-0. Didn’t start any games.
David Carr 4-10. Started the entire year. That may have also been the most games he ever won in a single season.
M. Vick – 8-4. Started week on and was the only #1 with a winning record.
T. Couch – 2-12. First start was week 2.
P. Manning 3-13. Started every game. Even he didn’t do well.
10 guys drafted #1 overall and only 4 started from week one. 1 started the very next week. Hardly any of them had good seasons seasons as rookies from win/loss perspective.
So much for tumbleweeds. More like a freight train.
Imagine if Indy had given up on PM when the team only won 3 games his first year out. And he had a coach who gave a damn.
Wrong count.
5 started week 1. One started week 2. 4 waited a whle.
And it would get lop-sided in my favor
If we started counting QBs selected with the first 20-22 picks.

Ahh, a freight train? Really dude?
Of the QBs on this list, who would you compare Cam to?
How’d that guy do?

Carson Palmer.
Eli Manning.
Just off the top of my head.
Yes I'm a dude.

consistency
Rivera did say cam needs to be more consistent. He did somewhat imply that jimmy was more so, but look at the film from last year. Jimmy was consistent, consistently bad. I’m all for givng him every chance to win the job but he didn’t even show anything to be excited about. There didn’t appear to be any up side. If nothing else u can’t say cam doesn’t show a huge up side. He will struggle this year but he will also show flashes of brilliance that jimmy never did last year. Look for a brea out season next year. Calling it now! You heard It here.

Not every player is going to be great from their first day in camp.
Look at Drew Brees. He’s a top 3 QB right now and San Diego kicked him to the curb just as he was catching fire. More goes into whether a player turns out to be good, bad or great than just one season. Sometimes it depends on the system, coaching staff and a lot of other factors. JC was on a really bad team with coaches who weren’t out for him to be successful and it showed. He may still suck in 3 years, but he deserves to at least have a real chance at success. Last year wasn’t really a fair shot.
Well...
SD had just drafted Rivers (well, Eli actually, but you know the deal) and Brees was coming off a shoulder injury that looked like something out of the Saw movies. So I can see why they’d be willing to deal Brees. But I really think Brees blossomed in N.O., so I can agree with you there.

#panthers news: Clausen to start on Saturday. good test for JC. Expect cam to run with 1st team during preseason, per Rivera’s comments.
Guacamole <3
I expect Cam to start games 2 and 3 and Clausen 1 and 4.
Sidenote: I’m not sure who John Ellis is, but he really should attribute to writers. Person tweeted this 10 minutes before he wrote it… just a pet peeve of mine. It’s stuff like this that gives bloggers bad names

Apparently Bill Voth pointed to him in his absence
Pretty sure he’s actually there, so it might not have been taken.
There’s a pretty big gap between being a training camp, and being in the press corps while Rivera is speaking to the media.
Maybe I’m wrong, but unless he’s holding a mic with the rest of the writers then Person’s twitter feed first announced it.
The great thing about both my post and yours is they are both assumptions
Can’t really slam the guy unless we know the facts. You see what I’m sayin?
He stated a week or two ago that he was given press credentials for T.C.
I can’t find where, but I did read it. His blog is www.the212daily.com. That is all I know.

I wouldnt mind letting jimmy start all preseason
Cam has to work with the 2s on offense, but he also goes against the 2s on D. This might help slow the game down for him and boost his confidence. Then promote him to the starter at week 1 or 2 which will also boost his confidence, hopefully.
Can you start a game to guess his starting week?

We'll see when the red jerseys come off.
I really hope I’m wrong, but when the red jerseys come off I expect to see the same “scared kid” syndrome" from Pickles that we saw last year.

I just came to check in and wow. Anyway I am FREAKED OUT about preseason. No serious injuries please. Knock on wood. Also, Andre Johnson broke a finger and was out 2 days good lord.

I'd really like to get our starting corners back in there
Sorry, but I am not impressed by burning Stanford for TD’s. Gamble and Munn need to get their asses in gear. I will not be happy if we get embarrased in PS because our QB’s cant work against solid corners and our D rolls over on big plays.

Many thanks pal. I must have missed that one. I was on the grandpa box (desktop)
I’ll be a lot happier and more optimistic if the cats move Garry Williams inside to sub for da Schwartz. He did a reasonable job at OT last year. That let Schwartz move inside to guard.
I agree that we’ve had a SERIOUS run of injuries the past few years. This is especially troubling considering the good reputation of grass fields. Linemen especially, seem to be falling pretty often.
The long lockout may account for some injuries during this training camp. I wonder how other teams are doing.

is it just me or have we had some of the worst luck with injuries over the past 3 years?

I hope Schwartz is okay, that's a bigger concern for me than Smitty's finger.
A little tape and he’ll be fine. Like James I don’t know if I can stand having Mack Bern starting at RG. With Otah back it should help but I’d much rather him be depth. We might as well as throw this thing in between Kalil and Otah:

Surprised @ the publicity Smitty's finger is getting
They did a segment on it on SC, showed his projected stats (66 catches, 899 yards, 5 TD) and the news has been on their feed along w/ a quote of his on the injury. Didn’t think the media cared about him, after his statistical drop-off…
by Ol' Uncle Munnerlyn on Aug 10, 2011 2:48 AM EDT reply actions
Yeah But
That’s the only news on the Panthers I’ve seen on SC all week. I thought they would at least be giving Cam updates, or make a sidenote at some point in time. They have talked about the Pats, Jets, Giants, Eagles and Lions every day. Not just the Panthers but the whole south can’t get no love at all
IT AIN'T SIZE OF THE DOG IN THE FIGHT BUT THE SIZE OF THE FIGHT IN THE DOG
We're not interesting enough to a national audience to be constantly mentioned
Smitty is one of the best in the game, he will get mentions for injuries. Gross, Beast, Double Trouble, Shocky, a QB and maybe Kalil or Olsen would also warrant national mentions.
Unless they’ve just won a Super Bowl, no team in the NFC South holds enough national interest to warrant all day media attention. Hopefully this year will change that.
Goddamn quebecios! It is 35 miles per hour, not 35 kilometers per... whatever is metric for hour.
I've seen them talk about Cam just about every day or two
They’ve talked about how he’s done in camp and about the depth chart position briefly yesterday.
