CSR Blogger Live from Panthers Training Camp, Tues Aug 9
Unfortunately last night was a wash (literally) when the storm came through. The Panthers practice for today was moved to 10:30 this morning, so I'll head down for my last practice shortly.

From what I've seen at camp...
He is horrible at it. Never gets under the ball. Looks lazy, and catches with his hands only, not entire body. Basically perfect recipe for dropped balls and fumbles when you’ve got 11 guys running down the field at you.
The more I watch LaFell, the less I like him. He just doesn’t look motivated like he should. I wouldn’t be sorry to see him cut for somebody with more drive.
Cut him a break
It’s the first time he’s ever fielded punts and you’re ready to cut him. Calm down.
"Excuses are a disease." -Cam Newton
That's not why i'm ready to cut him
LaFell has shown time and again that he does not have the work ethic to be a number 2 receiver in the NFL. Smitty said the WRs were unmotivated last year and Rivera said the same this year; we brought in Nannee for this exact reason.
IMHO we don’t need someone like LaFell as dead weight on our roster similar to the years of Dwayne Jarrett.
part of me has a feeling had is right
the other part says it’s too early to judge, maybe the competition will bring out the best in him.
"We want them to play fast, we want them to play physical, we want them to play hard and most importantly we want them to play smart." RR 8-3-11
I'm going to let my hatred for LSU stick out right now, buttttt.....
They do seem to produce a good number of talented, but highly unmotivated prospects in any given year (not that they don’t produce some good ones, or have late bloomers like Dwayne Bowe).

well the interesting thing here is
an attitude check for 11. AE, Clowney, Wright are all willing to play ST’s to secure their spot on the roster. how will BL respond to being asked to do the same? is he going to be a fighter, doing whatever it takes to make the team? or will he be offended being asked to do something “beneath” him?

todays WR ones
carolinagrowl Steve Reed
Steve Smith, David Gettis and Legedu Naanee working in three-receiver sets with Brandon LaFell the odd man out.
2nd day in a row Gettis comes out with the 1s. could be wrong of course, but i do believe right now gettis is above LaFell on the depth chart
"We want them to play fast, we want them to play physical, we want them to play hard and most importantly we want them to play smart." RR 8-3-11
As it should be
I hope this is the wake-up call LaFell needs. Otherwise, das boot IMO.
Possession receivers have an uphill battle in this offense
That position is mainly filled by TEs, and slot receivers inside are expected to grant large chunks of YAC due to the space the offense creates for them. I expect him to be relegated to run plays as a blocking receiver and on 3rd and shorts in the same set for possession 1st down catches. The #1 and #2 are expected to go deep constantly in this offense.
Going to need a third speed receiver to spell Smitty
He stated he was not interested in being the “stretch the field so the TE can get the underneath pass”-guy – at least not all the time. He was expecting some of the younger guys to take that, and he would be OK with taking the slot sometimes.
Not sure how much of that was due to the coaching/QB situation last year, and how much is just recognizing that he is getting older.

I do it awesomely.
by BusyBeingAwesome on Aug 9, 2011 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions
That would be my expectation
I guess the thing is that #1 can seem to imply different things sometimes. Often #1 is the speed/deep guy, where #2 is the bigger/slower/“Posession” guy, and that if there is one WR, it is the #1, and if there are two, then #2 with the depth chart always filling from the top.
I think (HOPE!) that Chud mixes it up, and will swap sides, put 89 in the slot when more than 2 WR’s, give Smitty a rest from time to time. It would be possible in my brain to have a single RB setup, and not even have 89 on the field… Use the younger guys on the sidelines to drive the CB’s deep, and use TE’s and bigger WR’s underneath, and see if the QB can find the mistake…
I would not expect it very often, as you don’t want to keep such a big talent off the field for long, but I would not find it out of the question either.

The place I see LaFell excelling is in the red zone offense. If he can get on the field in those sets, either him or Olsen will constantly be in position to make plays into the EZ.

Judging by this pre-season he’s not better than Edwards.
So either you keep the rookie (Pilares), or you keep the vet that has bounced around the league and done nothing. Not a tough choice in my opinion.

IIRC, Jason Carter was injured in the last Preseason game and went on IR before the season started.
Drew Carter was a draft pick.
Lightning fast, unfortunately he had a few ACL injuries and unspectacular hands that ended his career. Jason Carter was an UDFA, looked brilliant in TC catching everything thrown his way, I thought he was our next Ricky Proehl. Tore his ACL, came back the next year doing the same thing, however when the real games came around he had a few bad drops. Ended up getting cut.

A lot of teams carry 7 WRs, I would honestly be surprised if we carried 6
On game days, I expect 6 active WRs and 3 active TEs, with one less active OL with Hartsock covering any triple-injury craziness. Inactive TE would be Barnidge, inactive WR would be Clowney or Pilares.
He said that as a young guy, he ran decoy deep routes for Moose.
He said its his turn to go over the middle.

Semi-serious question
How different is a running play at the goal line vs at midfield? I would think that passing would get compressed a lot, where I-formation Off-tackle right would be pretty similar regardless of where you run it?
(also have to figure in new QB’s vs established RB’s – need the cycles on passing)

well, the safeties are closer to the line
because they dont have to worry about the deep threat
"We want them to play fast, we want them to play physical, we want them to play hard and most importantly we want them to play smart." RR 8-3-11
Since the safeties are closer due to the compressed backfield, they will make it to the LOS as the RBs get up to speed.
The run game experiences the same increased difficulty on a compressed field.

Been here all morning
but yes… anytime AE gets to take some snaps, I get excited.
This comment section has officially been Tater'd.
Clausen wide?
Seems silly… you would think Cam would be out wide on that play.
This comment section has officially been Tater'd.
Why?
If they’re practicing the wildcat the QB goes out to the WR position.
Obviously they’re just preparing in case Clausen is the QB in the game when they call that play. I’m sure they’ll do the same with Newton. It’s not like the QB actually does anything on that play anyway.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
But again, they're just practicing that play regardless of who's at the QB position.
We have two guys competing to start at QB, so they’re both going to have to learn where to line up for that formation.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
Even if Clausen is the starting QB, makes no sense to have him lined up wide.
It would be a better allocation of resources if Newton was to line up wide no matter what since his athleticism is such a plus over Clausen.
In that case why bother having a QB in the game at all?
The main reason the QB lines up out wide in the wildcat is so that the opposing DC can’t just guess the play call based on the personnel.
If you bring in Newton when Clausen is starting it completely defeats the object. You might as well sub Clausen for a WR and be done with it.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
Both Newton and Clausen can throw the ball
but Newton also adds the extra dimension as a valid receiving threat due to his athleticism. Clausen does not have that. It makes more sense to have Newton in a Wildcat play than it would to have Clausen.
You read my post, right?
I’m really puzzled by your reply.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury

Perhaps I have something wrong
but having Newton out there means that you have to worry about so many more play calls. They are not going to call a double reverse to Clausen. I don’t see them passing the ball to Clausen. But with the Newton those are options.
Am I missing something here?
You are suggesting that Newton replace JC (even if only for one play).
So, yeah, that’s gonna bring out comments from the ole Hammy.

If you have Clausen starting and you bring Cam in
it’s tipping them off to an extent, because why would you bring him in if he’s not going to play a role in the play? However that does add a certain element of misdirection and confusion that Clausen doesn’t provide.
But then again who do you think would be the most shocked if they threw the ball to Jimmy? XD

You lose 90% of the misdirection by bringing in Newton IF Clausen is starting.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
Not necessarily.
While you do tipoff you’re going to be using the Wildcat, the defense still has to make sure they honor the threat Newton is to pass/run/catch/etc. This could free up someone else to make the play.
Yes I'm a dude.

because he answered your post
your reply was “well you might aswell just put WR in” his answer was "you put cam in because he is a QB thats faster, stronger, taller, better hands and still has the QB tag/position. why would you not ALWAYS have cam outthere for wildcat plays? i understand the point is to get them both doing it now to learn the plays but if this was a game it should always be cam spread wide.

Again - 'cos it indicates to the D that you're going to run the wildcat.
Unless you’re chopping and changing your QB mid-game, which is never a good idea.

practice highlights from john ellis
Quick hits before AM session breaks:
-Newton separating himself with height, delivery, willingness and ability to make vertical throws–with accuracy.
-Gamble in uniform, still not practicing. Looked lethargic.
-A. Edwards running in slot, and running in wildcat as QB. Made a nice throw on 9 route to Clowney.
-Clausen still running with 1st team offense, rotating with Cam, but not making any "splash" plays. Looks small in pocket.
-Norwood still at first team RDE. Brown on 2nd unit.
-Munnerlyn still out. First team CB’s: Wilson and Stanford.
-Olsen and Shockey in 12-personnel packages together frequently, often on same side of formation.
-McDermott running wide array of blitzes, per usual.
-More on Clausen: combo of height/arm/confidence leading to an abundance of checkdowns and slants/shallow crosses.
-Beason still out, Conner active at MLB. Good lateral movement, good ability to get off blocks.
-Gettis and LaFell back in together, both being outperformed (by a shade) by Naanee today. Naanee may start.
-Godfrey/Martin look confident, sound the part. Both vocal and helping the inexperienced CB’s.
-Smith limped off after an awkward attempt to grab a Newton pass. Later returned.
-Newton has post and corner routes nailed. Best throw of day near end of practice, 30-y corner route to Shockey, perfect spiral, perfectly placed over the head of LB Thomas Davis.
-No less than 10 wildcat-formation plays, with Edwards at QB. Threw a TD on a go route to David Clowney. Later, a woeful 9 route underthrown to Smith, picked by Cletis Gordon.
-If Derek Anderson threw a pass today, I didn’t see it.

Eric Norwood is a manimal. Or like a crafy shape-shifter. A Changeling.
As a fellow gamecock, I was stoked when we got him last year. The dude’s jsut going to get better and better, he’s a terror to qb’s when it comes to pass rush. Not taking anything away from E. Brown because he has shown flashes of greatness too IMO, but I could see the two splitting time at DE, and CJ holding down the other side. Norwood can plays linebacker as well, so can play pass coverage and chase down a running back if he breaks loose.
with this news our 4 man DE rotation is currently solid

Cam's definitely got some work to do in the short passing game.
Can’t kill your receivers like that.

Actually Jimmy threw the pass.
Steve said it was just a freakish thing. It was a regular square in. The ball was not fired in there any faster than usual, according to Smitty.

ERL, Thank you for posting the Steve Smith on FNZ link. It was fantastic.
I’m in Holland and working 7 days a week. So I’m starving for Panther news. I also loved reading on a different post all the JR comments. I was like “Wow did somebody just turn a light on in our dark dungeon?” Again TY
Anyone else know where to find the Panthers depth chart.
I’ve heard the panthers released their depth chart. I looked on panthers.com and couldn’t find it. Or I should say I went to the depth chart section and there was nothing there.
