Rank the Panthers' Wide Receivers
I have to admit I'm having a hard time doing this very thing. After #89, the picture of our WR's is clear as mud. The incumbents Brandon LaFell and David Gettis have been laid up with hammys and called out by RR. Armanti Edwards, who caught a total of, um, null passes last year (my apologies to keith there), has been praised. Rookie Kealoha Pilares has looked good in camp, as has David Clowney. New addition Legedu Naanee is familiar with Chud's offense and already shows signs of impressing. Then there's Wallace Wright, Charly Martin, Trent Guy and some good UDFA's that aren't even seeing the field much.
What do you think? As of today, Aug. 8, 2011, how would you rank the Panthers' WR's? Not so much in talent or who you like, but more specifically, their likelihood to be on the 53 man roster on September 11. How many WR's do you see on our roster, and who will they be?
Here's mine:
1. Smitty
2. Naanee
3. Gettis
4. Pilares
5. Edwards
6. LaFell
But Brandon better produce in preseason, because Clowney is working extremely hard. And if it weren't for RR's praise of AE, I just might have him not on the list. Until I see having success in games, it's hard to be overly confident in Armanti's ability to beat out some of these other guys.

with this kind of depth at WR's 2-7, it's not out of the realm of possibility
that we could package a LaFell, Gettis, or Clowney with a pick to meet our needs at DT or CB. you could make the argument, that we could trade most anyone except for Smitty and still begin the year with a full complement of talented receivers. Dan Connor, with a hiccup in his recovery resulting in missing practices, is less likely to be desirable trade bait until he shows he is completely healthy.

Don't count out Clowney!
He’s developing a rapport with Cam. I have a feeling we’re going to end up cutting a good wideout. I wouldn’t think Money or LaFell would get cut due to their draft position, new coaching staff or not. Pilares was just drafted so I don’t see him getting cut either. We just signed Naanee so I wouldn’t see the logic in cutting him a month later. But then again, using this kind of logic we would end up not cutting any of them. So in summary, beats me.

im with you kaiser. clowney looked very active and good despite a couple drops on
saturday. he looks like a guy that is going to make the team. but……gosh darn, who do you cut then? lol

Here's how I'd rank them. (Full disclosure- I think they all make the team)
This is how I think they stand in terms of making the team.
Smith
Gettis
LaFell
Edwards
Naanee
Pilares
Clowney
As far as ranking on the depth chart………

- Gettis, LaFell, Naanee, Pilares

despite RR's praises
i see pilares beating out AE for playing time this year at WR

Anything's possible.
He’s go a ways to go though. Unlike last year, Armanti looks like he’s been playing receiver all his life. Honestly, I expect to see a lot of both guys this season. As long as it’s not due to injury, I’m happy about that.

it really does look like WR/TE by committee at this point
a far cry from what we’re used to. im still not sure its in the best interest of the team to carry 7 WRs and 4 TEs. you’d think that would leave us a bit thin at some other positions, wouldn’t you? and why, because we can’t decide who the best 5 or 6 WR’s are?? i won’t be shocked if 1 or 2 of those don’t make the team, and it might surprise us who they are

If the hammies don't heal....
Someone could get stashed on the PUP for awhile.
To me, the problem is investment. I don’t presume to know anything the front office is thinking except for this; Smith isn’t going anywhere.
As for the rest, Gettis has shown deep threat ability and good hands. LaFell, moved the chains and made some really clutch catches along the side lines. Drops were an issue but nothing we didn’t know when we drafted him. His down field blocking is relentless. Edwards is a Hurney/Richardson pick. He’s not getting cut and will get extra opportunities to prove his worth. Pilares is strong, fast and just starting to figure out the WR position. He blew up his senior year in college and still isn’t near his ceiling. He was scouted by several teams and “The Godfather” Gil Brandt has gone on record saying Pilares will surprise many in the NFL. That leaves Naanee and Clowney. I believe they legitimately brought Naanee in to compete with LaFell and Gettis but more so to light a fire under their asses. Both Naanee and Clowney have experience and history playing special teams, not to mention, we have little invested in them. Neither will raise a stink about playing special teams and that is where I think they make the team. I think Naanee pushes for the #2 spot but ultimately makes the team as a rotational #2 or #3WR and special teams player. In my opinion, Gary Barnidge or David Clowney are the most likely to get cut if anyone does. Honestly, Barnidge should have trade value if someone needs a TE. I think we could at least get a low 4th or high 5th rounder for him.
I know two things for sure…….
#1. I have absolutely no damn idea what will happen.
#2. It’s a good problem to have.

yeah it certainly breeds competition
both hammy guys practiced in the gym tonite. nice having depth for insurance against injury. maybe we end up carrying 22 guys on defense to make room for all the WRs/TEs and stashing some young defensive guys on the PS. i don’t think we trade barnidge tho. he’s the keeper, young untapped talent. i’d rather trade old man shockey with all the wear on his tires, than barnidge

I heard that.......
but I doubt Shockey has any trade value. He can play, the question is for how long. Seems like his “minor” injuries become season ending very quickly. I really don’t know though.

most interesting thing about the posts thus far is
nobody’s able to say “that’s WR #7, he’s going to get cut”. it really is a tough call right now. the PS games will probably help clarify some

I think Guy and Clowney end up on the practice squad
Olsen will line up at WR so will will only probably carry 6 WR
i think clowney has too much game experience to still be PS eligible
and im afraid trent guy’s gone. not hearing his name at all. was in shorts on Sat.

Clowney & Wright Will Likely Be Salary Cuts
Small WR – Smith & Edwards
Big WR – Gettis & Naanee
3rd WR – LaFell & Pilares
WR’s Cut – Clowney, Wright, Martin, Guy, & Warren
Clowney (6-0, 188, 435-40, 1.52-10) was drafted in the 5th round (#157) of the 2007 draft by the Packers, who cut him, and he was claimed by the Jets. As a 5th year player (not Practice Squad qualified) his salary is at least $685,000, almost $300,000 more in base salary than Gettis, Lafell, and Edwards at $405,000. and that along with his lack of production for 4 years is why he will likely be cut. The same goes for special teams star Wallace Wright, who’s 2011 salary is $840,000.
Wright should be traded now, even if it’s only for a conditional 7th round pick, because he’s sure to be cut. He doesn’t have much trade value, but a team like the Chargers might be interested, their special teams were disgraceful last season. The same goes for Clowney, if any team is interested.
wright defly looks like the odd man out
i just hate to lose clowney with all the good play and ST’s ability. he’s doing all the right things. but maybe he isn’t as talented as some of the other guys

steve reed reporting gettis ran with the 1s in his first practice back
WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE: Here’s who ran with the first team offense Monday night: QB Jimmy Clausen, RB DeAngelo Williams, FB Tony Fiammetta, WRs Steve Smith and David Gettis, LT Jordan Gross, LG Travelle Wharton, C C.J. Davis, RG Mackenzy Bernadeau, RT Jeff Otah.
"We want them to play fast, we want them to play physical, we want them to play hard and most importantly we want them to play smart." RR 8-3-11
I wouldn't take too much stock in whose running with the 1's right now
It seems they are rotating everyone around. My guess is to build chemistry throughout the team, and see who is playing the best. By the third PS game, we’ll have a good idea who they’re targeting as the 1’s.
Out of all of the positions, WR is probably the murkiest one - the most difficult to predict how it will play out.
Warning: The proceeding is one of my many novellas.
In many positions, it’s clear cut who will be on the roster and who the starters will be (given that they’re healthy).
O-line – Gross, Wharton, KaIil, Schwartz, Otah. LBs – Anderson, Beast, TD. Safeties – Martin, Godfrey.
In a few positions, you kind of wonder if the last guy or two will stick around and wonder exactly what the depth chart will look like. Example – it’s probably safe to assume that we have D-Will, J-Stew, and Goodson on the roster & in that order. But will Sutton make it to the roster or be stored on the PS? It’s probably safe to assume that they’ll keep Shockey, Olsen, and Hartsock. But will Shockey start, or Olsen? Will Barnidge make the roster? I predict we keep all four TEs seeing as how Chud has an affinity for the position (and because it’s almost a given that Shockey will not last an entire season, but will be a significant contributor when healthy).
Smitty is unquestionably WR #1. But after that, it looks like a complete crap shoot looking in from the outside. How many do they want on the roster? If they plan on using 4 WR sets (and dear God, please throw in the occasional 5 WR set), they may keep as many as 7. How many might they try to keep on the practice squad? What’s more valuable – the deep threat or the possession guy? Who’s going to step up with that undeniable competitive hunger and the skill worthy of being the #2 opposite of Smitty?
Based on his comments, Rivera values tenacious guys – guys who play with physicality and passion. He actually liked that Goodson got into that scuffle with Considine – it wasn’t personal, no one was hurt, but they were two guys trying to “establish themselves.” I think Gettis has the most natural ability out of the bunch to be the #2 – big body, practically leaves scorch marks on the turf as he flies downfield, good hands – but he appears to be pretty soft-spoken. Gettis has the body to be that physical guy, but I don’t think he consistently fights hard enough. We don’t know exactly what he did in the offseason to prepare. Based on LaFell’s Twitter account, it seemed like he spent more time hanging out at clubs in Houston than working on his craft (I of course don’t know for sure if that’s the case or not). But he is a good possession guy and can throw some nasty blocks on special teams. We know AE actively reached out to various professionals to help him hone his skills as a WR and as a punt returner – but things have quieted down after he made such a splash at the beginning of camp, and he’s still in the early stages of trying to transition to positions that he’s never played. Clowney is a speedster and seems to have developed a chemistry with Cam, but his hands are still rather suspect (more than Gettis’ and LaFell’s). We know very little about Pilares – he’s still pretty new to the WR position, but based on Youtube clips, he’s a bruiser after the catch. And we know very little about Naanee because of his limited playing time. I do think that he makes it onto the roster – he’s been in the league a few years, he knows and has played in this system, and Rivera and Chud are familiar with him and wouldn’t have brought him in if they didn’t think he could contribute.
My guess as to depth chart:
Starters: Smitty and Naanee or Gettis.
The rest:
The other of Naanee or Gettis, Edwards, LaFell, Pilares, and Clowney on the bubble.

this place just wouldn't be the same without jamie in here
great post, tks jamie.
i think ive seen enough from pilares to see him as part of the plan.
lafell being a big solid blocker was extremely important in last year’s scheme, we’ll see if it is as important to Chud.
and i think Nanu is a legit WR in this league.
so, time will tell i guess

And I'm such a dork...
But I realized many hours later that I wrote “Considine” when I meant “Greco.” I have to correct such things. =)
Eh – at least they’re both safeties.

5. LaFell
6. Pilares
7. Clowney
That is my line up in terms of least likely to be cut to most… As far as who actually sees the field, that’s tough. I think it’s going to entirely depend on our formations. I don’t think we see our guys lining up in the same spot every play like we’re used to.. I think our guys are going to be moving around a lot and 3, 4, even 5 receivers at times. If someone has got to go, I’d imagine it’s Clowney, we’re not going to get rid of the youth.

I have to go with on-the-field results:
Smith
Naanee
Gettis
LaFell
Edwards
Clowney
Pilares
I’m feeling much better about our WRs with the addition of Naanee.
Here we go
Smith
Gettis
Edwards
Naanee
LaFell
Pilares
Clowney

Clowney
Pilares
Prediction: I fully expect the #2 position to be done by commitee and see a lot of rotation between Gettis and Naanee (with possibly some Clowney mixed in), without a consistent starter throughout the game. The routes they are going to be asked to run will require a rotation of fresh legs. LaFell slotted to see the field on chain-moving plays opposite Olsen to create coverage gaps, with Edwards and Pilares taking part in the option spread package or 2-minute drill. Edwards may also be featured in gadget plays.

todays WR ones
carolinagrowl Steve Reed
Steve Smith, David Gettis and Legedu Naanee working in three-receiver sets with Brandon LaFell the odd man out.
2nd day in a row Gettis comes out with the 1s. could be wrong of course, but i do believe right now gettis is above LaFell on the depth chart

As he was most of last season.
Speaking of Smitty…look at the dude’s left calf. That’s ridiculous. Serious calf envy.

how the coaches are seeing things
WR: 1. 89 Steve Smith, 2. 14 Armanti Edwards, 3. 87 David Clowney, 4. 15 Wallace Wright, 5. 83 Charly Martin, 6. 86 Darvin Adams.
WR: 1. 12 David Gettis, 2. 11 Brandon LaFell, 3. 6 Legedu Naanee, 4. 81 Kealoha Pilares. 5. 19 Trent Guy, 6. 18 Jamorris Warren
Gotta say BL would have to be happy being hurt and called out and not dropping down the depth chart. Interesting also clowney is a 3 and pilares is a 4. there’s no way the aloha rookie gets cut IMO
