Cam Newton Fan Fest Video

So, there's a lot of us that didn't get the chance to check out Fan Fest and more over Cam Newton's performance so I thought I'd share the best video of it I could find. There were several that were single clips but this one has about 6 1/2 min of footage and shows both the good and the bad throws. Not the best camera work but hey we're not watching fox...Enjoy!

I watched this video, and the Clausen video from fan fest...

Two things are clear to me, based on these videos:

Cam Newton gives us the best chance to win already. His accuracy is not as bad as his detractors claim, he’s much more confident with his throws, he is more willing to take shots down the field, and his athleticism should allow him to avoid the pass rush and make positive plays with his legs more.

Jimmy does check down more often than Cam, but in a few of those instances it was the right throw to make. His accuracy was not that much better than Cam’s, and on deep balls it was probably a little worse. He threw behind is receiver on a couple occasions whereas Cam tends to overthrow a bit. He also held onto the ball a little longer, which I think is a product of not being confident in throwing the ball down the field with authority and instead looks for a check-down to come open.

The second thing I realized from this video is that Cam Newton is going to have his fair share of struggles this season. I know that there is a lot of optimism amongst us Panther fans, and a good majority of that has to do with the loads of promise that Cam shows. That being said, from what I saw on this video, he still has a ways to go to turn into a winning NFL QB.

As you would expect from a rookie QB, he’s not going through his progressions quickly or effectively enough. He’s not diagnosing blitzes and coverages quickly or effectively enough. He has the tendency to let his arm get away from him and overthrow his receivers. He’s going to have the tendency to lock onto his primary receiver. It doesn’t show up in this video, because Cam doesn’t have a real pass rush coming after him, but he will probably try and rely on his legs when he should continue through his progression a bit too soon and too often.

We should be able to see a lot clearer picture on both QB’s during the preseason, but I think we all need to temper our expectations on Cam this year. He’s not going to make the Pro Bowl. He will probably throw more interceptions than touchdowns. He’s going to get sacked quite a bit. We all know Cam is phenomenally talented, and it’s obvious when you watch him on the field, however even Peyton Manning struggled during his rookie season. It takes time for a rookie QB to adjust to the NFL game and Cam’s learning curve is steeper than normal.

All that being said, he has the ability to make plays and win games for us. I firmly believe he’ll be our starting QB on game one barring any sort of injury (heaven forbid). Our coaching staff is going to have to find a game plan that lessens the learning curve and puts Cam in the best position to win. Like I’ve said before, I think a 6 win season is a realistic goal for this year, but if Cam can limit his mistakes and the defense can play at a top 5 level, then we could have a shot at making the postseason.

That is why we got D. Will back

While Cam has loads of potential he is still a rookie. With double trouble there he can get away with being a rookie and we can still do well.

However, I think if he continues progressing as fast as he is we may be in for a surprise. Remember, this is only his FIRST week EVER or practicing with an actual NFL Defense

Thanks! A few observations:

What a catch & run by Barnidge around the 2:00 minute mark! I liked King and Rosario, but Gary is a guy I’ve always felt we have never taken full advantage of. I feel like our “three headed monster” at tight end is stronger than it has ever been with Barnidge, Olsen, and Shockey.

Clowney looked pretty solid out there, too. There’s gonna be some tough decisions at the WR position when it’s time to trim down to 53.

When we send the house this year…look out.

It’s really good to Williams out there again.

Cam is kinda tall.

From what I saw..

The defense looks a little “suspect” there was no push in the middle to collapse the pocket, or outside rush, IMO I think there will probably be a lot more blitzing and exotic defensive schemes to make up for that, so you really can’t get a true evaluation of Newton with that..The DB’s don’t look that bad but I wouldn’t trust’em on one on one coverage.

by ams6378 on Aug 8, 2011 9:29 AM EDT reply actions

I wouldn't put too much stock into what the defense has to show at a TC event like this...

they can barely tackle each other as it is, and you have to imagine that the plays being called are pretty vanilla (outside of a curveball here and there)

Great Video! Thanks for posting.

A Few Quick Observations.

- Cam really is Paul Bunyan big.
- the defensive schemes are looking great…moving players around disguising the blitz. awesome
- Overall, looked pretty solid for two weeks of practice.

Awesome!

Thanks for posting the video Kris. And as BAMF said about Cam…“WOW!”. Even if we don’t win that many games this year, at least we’ll be more fun to watch. And WHEN Cam grasps the understanding of progression reads and deciphering defenses….this is going to be a fun ride!

Casual Observations

1. Cam is freaking huge, you hear his stats but it isn’t until you see him under center where he is literally squatting to get low enough to get the snap that you can tell this guy is a monster. A year or two in an NFL weight room and LBs and Safeties will be thinking twice when hes charging up the field.
2. He keeps his feet in motion not quite Peyton Manning motion, but in motion its most noticeable when the O and D lines are out of the picture. From what I understand this technique is used for timing routes in the offense and is supposed to be difficult for options guys like Cam.
3. His rookie year will be boom or bust every play, when he’s got the play he dominates when he’s not we’ll be scratching our heads as the sails no where.
4. There is nothing quite like watching one of our RBs burst through a defense, big run there in the first minute was reminiscent of 2008.
5. Lots of motion on both side of the ball, a very nice change.

CAM NEEDS TO SPEED UP HIS GAME

After watchinbg the FANFEST video, I do beleive Cam gives us the best chance to win. I think Cam needs to be on time with his throws. He is throwing late and will probably have a number of picks this year until he speeds up in his progressions.

by Scott Loflin on Aug 8, 2011 12:01 PM EDT reply actions

As I said above

He has only been practicing with an NFL defense for a week. For one week I think he is coming along very quickly.

the next real test is how he progresses through the pre-season

if we see the same level of improvement as we’ve seen from the combine, i think we’re in good shape…. i think most of our 6 to 8 wins will come in the second half of the season.

by Floods on Aug 8, 2011 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I honestly am thinking we may see 16-20 picks from Cam his rookie year, should he start 16.

I’m sure he will get smarter with the football as the year goes on, but part of what I love about him is the way he’s going to take chances. I have no doubt he believes he can make any throw.

Good video. All I can say is that this will be a difficult year for the team. Cam looks good, but it is obvious that he will need a year or so to acclimate to the NFL game. But I must say, some of those throws were impressive, and I can’t wait to see him out on the field some this Saturday.

Few other things: looks as though Clowney is trying to win himself a spot on this team. Made some pretty nice catches there. The D’s aggressiveness looks deadly. Just need to be sure there is a balance in the types of plays called on D. Should be a lot more fun to watch though.

Re: Clowney

He and Cam have great timing together from all of their training camp snaps. Both are mainly running with he #2’s. Friday evening at training camp, Cam hit Clowney three times for touchdowns. There was a forth in which Clowney got forced out by a toe. It was awesome.

I’m really torn on the wide receivers right now. Gettis and LaFell not being able to practice is giving some guys their shot. Clowney is making the most of his and I believe Naanee is far better than his SD stats. Pilares looked good at camp and HAS to make the team. If he hits the practice squad, I promise you that he’s gone in a split second. I feel that we almost have to carry 7 receivers into the regular season and maybe trade one of them if another team has an injury. If it were up to me, I’d keep these guys, in this order.

Smith
Gettis
LaFell
Edwards
Naanee
Pilares
Clowney

On the trade note, with the Mikel Leshoure injury in Detroit, I’d be calling the Lions to see how desperate they were for a running back. Javid Best isn’t an every down back and is a better weapon as a pass receiver out of the back field. Best reminds me a lot of Mike Goodson. Maybe offer up Josh Vaughn or, dare I say it…..Tyrell Sutton. Just a thought. Don’t flame.

I think your list is most likely what we’ll see, barring injuries; I know Trent Guy is a fan fave (for his local ties I guess?), and somehow Charly Martin has carved out a cult following of sorts, but if someone outside of those 7 makes the roster I’ll be shocked, shocked I tells ya!

Depends on how bad a team needs a RB.

I think Goodson would attract a team looking for RB help a lot quicker than Sutton.

Goodson definitely has more game tape.

I just suggested Vaughn or Sutton because they are closer to the mold of Mikel Leshoure. Vaughn in particular. His lack of playing time and game tape give him low value. Sutton has shown he can run between the tackles and has a fair amount of game tape so I figured he’d bring more value. Goodson is almost a carbon copy of Javid Best so I didn’t figure they’d be interested in him.

i think goody would have high trade value in general

sutton is more dime a dozen kind of decent RB, little trade value.

vaughn, IMO, is not an NFL caliber back. zero value.

but having said that

i wouldnt be all that upset if we traded goody (to meet some needs on defense) because sutton IMO is more than adequate as a backup for us. he’s always stepped up great in games for us. but i don’t think the league in general would be coveting him in trade talks

To me, trading Goodson is not an option.

That’s why I suggested the other guys. I respectfully disagree regarding Vaughn. He’s a bruiser. Low value due to lack of game tape but he can play in this league, especially as a part of a back field rotation. Sutton is on the verge of breaking out. His burst has improved and he’s tougher to bring down than his size would suggest. He’d be great to pair with Javid Best. I don’t want to see him go, but for the right price, I’d consider moving him.

Training camp & preseason.

I base my opinion of what I’ve seen at training camp and in the preseason. We try to attend at least 4 training camp practices each year, as well as, FanFest. We only made it to 3 practices this year though.

Vaughn’s probably not ever going to be a highlight reel guy, but with any amount of blocking, he can pound it up the middle for 3.5-4.5 yards a pop and be a goal line type back. His body type and skill set are very similar to Tim Hightower. Not a true starter, but effective in a two back system. Paired with Javid Best, they could be a good “thunder & lightening” tandem. I don’t expect Detroit would be interested in giving compensation for him, but I bet they’d pick him up quick if we cut him tomorrow. There just aren’t any free agent running backs available that are any good. Sutton is the guy I think they could really use, but I don’t really want to let him go. For a 3rd I would, for a 4th I’d think about it. At the end of the day, it’s a pipe dream. I don’t really think Detroit wants either of them. Probably will look to the Raiders to see if they can get Michael Bush.

I brought up the RB's since that's what they lost.

Vaughn is a bigger back and would better fit the mold of Leshoure, but he is virtually unknown. Probably not much value with him. Sutton is bigger than Javid Best, but not by a lot. He does have some decent NFL game tape though so I thought maybe they’d be more interested in him. There just aren’t many free agent RB’s out there that are worth a crap. Sutton has the potential to be a starter when paired with another guy. If we hadn’t have claimed him off waivers, I think Green Bay would have stashed him on their practice squad and he’d have ended up getting a good amount of playing time. I’d rather keep him on the team, but if Detroit offered a 3rd or 4th rounder, I’d have to at least think about it.

Well, we need to surround Cam with the people he can trust. But this logjam at WR is going to mean somebody we all like is going to get cut. We can’t keep em all. If Clowney has developed a rapport with Cam and they are on the same page, then Clowney should make the cut. Practice is one thing, the preseason games will show us if those two work well with each other.

To me, Smith, Edwards, Pilares and Naanee are the automatics. LaFell, Gettis, and Clowney are on the outside looking in for me only because LaFell and Gettis have yet to show the new coaching staff what they can do. I think they both have potential, but they better step it up, because Edwards seemingly has an inside track to be the #2 guy here.

Pilares in a draft pick, so I doubt they let him go now. And we would not have signed Naanee simply to cut him a couple weeks later (however I could be totally wrong and it may happen if he sucks out loud). The fact he is a SD transplant I feel also gives him an edge over LaFell, Gettis, etc. Clowney as mentioned before could very well get a roster spot because of his time with Newton.

It will definitely be an interesting rest of TC. Never has this team had more potential and players at the WR position to choose from than now (or at least since the first year of the Fox regime).

I really like Pilares.

But he’s a rookie wide receiver who almost no one had on their radar prior to the draft. If we cut him, I think there’s a decent chance he could make it to the practice squad. You’re going to see a lot of teams cut rookies in favor of vets who know what they’re doing because of the lockout. I’m not advocating cutting Pilarers, I’m as excited about his potential as anyone on here, but if he stinks it up during the preseason he might be the odd man out.

Yes I'm a dude.

by Flowing Willow on Aug 8, 2011 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I can agree with that. I just hope that we don’t loose him if they do try and sneak him on the practice squad. If that is one thing the NHL does right is that it allows teams to transfer their younger players to their farm teams without the fear of them getting snatched up by other teams. I think a similar rule should apply to rookies being placed on practice squads, but that is just me.

Proud Member of Cat Scratch Reader and coiner of the (minus Bowers) meme

by Ivan459 on Aug 8, 2011 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Brett Carson

The NHL has some complicated rules on when a player can be sent to the minors without risk and when they can be claimed off waivers. The only one of them i understand is that if a minor league player is called on “an emergency basis” (example, as an injury replacement) then when that period is over they can be sent back down without risk. The Hurricanes tried to send Brett Carson down to Charlotte in some other fashion and was ‘stolen’ off of the waiver wire by the Calgary Flames. but I agree the NFL needs a similar set of rules to allow more fluidity between the PS and the regular roster.
