Panthers grab UDFA OG Bryant Browning

The Panthers just grabbed undrafted free agent Bryant Browning who was waived by the Rams. Browning was a 3 year starter at right guard and 2010 Captain at Ohio St. He has a touching personal story insofar as his mother passed away when he was 12, and he lost his aunt a week later, leaving him to be reared primarily by an older brother. Professionally, he does not seem to have a tremendous amount of upside.

LB Kelvin Smith was waived to make room for him on the squad.

Here is the CBS scouting report on him:

Strengths: Power blocker who accelerates quickly out of his stance and keeps his pad level low when blocking for the run. Uses long arms to hold off defenders in pass protection. Has good balance and can hold his ground even when he fails to gain leverage. Fair footwork for his size, gets around the line quickly when pulling. Effective cut blocker especially in short-yardage situations. Uses his arms aggressively to gain leverage.

Weaknesses: Only marginal athleticism and agility. Does not have great strength and struggles to handle bull rushers. Has poor awareness as a pass blocker, struggling with swim moves and looking confused on twists and blitzes. Reaches when pass blocking and does not keep a good center of gravity. Gets overwhelmed with multiple rushers in his area. Does not keep his body square in pass protection. Allows his legs to go dead when engaged. Uncomfortable trying to block in space, fails to break down at the second level, and is not effective lead blocking on sweeps and outside runs. Fails to square up when blocking downfield. Struggles to sustain blocks. Must learn to keep his hands inside the defender's body This really looks to me like a practice squad move, but the upside is that we are continuing stay active on the waiver wire.
