CSR Blogger Reports from Panthers Training Camp, Thurs, Aug 4
I'm heading back down to training camp this evening. I should be able to provide a little more commentary this evening. Tonight is the first night everyone can practice and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing where we are when everyone is on the field.

Hey guys!
I plan on checking out the Panthers this Saturday. My girlfriend wants to go for her birthday & wants a Steve Smith autograph (I wouldn’t mind one myself =P) Would anyone know if we’d have a better chance of getting autographs in Spartanburg or the Fan Fest @ Bank of America? Thanks in advance!
P.S. You guys are awesome, I’m forever lurking on here looking at everyone’s posts & comments lol.
by jLink on Aug 4, 2011 5:14 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
Spartanburg.
There are a lot more people at Fan Fest and more surface area for the players to cover in terms of giving people autographs.
At Spartanburg, they all are forced to funnel into one exit point, so there is a better shot there. But I will tell you, you will be a lucky SOB if you get a Smitty autograph. I have been going to training camp for 6 years straight, and have only gotten his autograph once.

Thanks for the response!
Wow, what a horribly low chance >.< I hope we get lucky on Saturday then. If anything the attempt is worth it & I get to see them practice. Any tips on increasing my chances of getting an autograph? Go early, stand near a certain area, scream like a moron, wear tights, or maybe bringing a box of bojangles?
What I saw work last year.
A girl, probably around 15, made a poster that said "Today’s my birthday and I’m spending it with the Carolina Panthers. She got EVERYBODY’S autograph. I stood next to her and got nearly as many. Funniest thing was………..

No need to be envious, she isn’t exactly a field of roses if you know what I mean lol. She’s a big Panthers fan, but she doesn’t like watching the games. She doesn’t like the tension of whether we’re gonna win or lose. I think that’s why she wants to go to the camp, no stress of winning or losing lol. Although she’ll probably be sad if she can’t get Steve Smith’s autograph. She’s the only person left she knows on the team since John Kasay’s gone now /sadface.
hold on....i'm still counting the she's in that post.....

Brian Baldinger just said if HE was Carolina he wouldn’t give another QB a snap in pre season. (im guessing he means with the 1’s) than Cam Newton. He said this offense he isn’t alone he has proven RB’s Proven TE’s and a Proven Number 1 WR. He said he would play Newton and make NFL defenses adjust to them not the other way around. He said throw out the depth char there is no way Cam Newton isn’t starting day one for Carolina….that it for what you will

I think it is funny, and says something, that a DC is worried about a qb hitting his guy.
I know it is irksome to get hit by and no contact player but is still awesome. can not wait till Cam runs smack over a safty in line to a touchdown.

Big dude to be laying a shoulder block on Sanford. If he can hit them they should hit him. I could see why the DC was upset

More than that
rules are rules. DCs are probably irritated that you can hit the QB in camp to begin with. To have the QB block you must be infuriating.
I can understand why Cam did it though. Sutton changed direction tried to make something out of nothing Cam just went straight instinct.

Seriously?
Nobody would be defending Greg Hardy if he hit tackled Newton as he takes off on a run.
Cam has a red shirt..
The others do not.. Perhaps it wasn’t clear to him that he need stay out of the way, since they can’t hit him.
http://www.facebook.com/dranged1 - Add me on Facebook. Can never have too many CSR/Panther friends.
Newton scrambling is common. Sutton changing direction at the last second wasn’t. Cam just reacted. Sanford didn’t have a problem with it. The coaches scolded Cam for it. All is done

I would say that Hardy got cuaght up in the heat of the moment.
It is not hard too do so when your chaseing down the ball carrier when you trained to instinctual knock the piss out of people..
Question is did Cam blow him up or knock him down. I think the latter considering they gave each of five minuts later. And from a locker room stance Cam earned himself some rep with it.

He looked useful in San Diego, but I think half of that was Rivers.

He had a good YPC
Naanee’s been more of a special teamer in the past, but had decent YPC numbers last year (16.1) when he got to play.

Very well could have been. Rivers has as away of useing everyone at some point.
Same could be said for Manning, and Brady, they tend to make a WR look good lol.

Indeed. The Chargers have a fetish for tall receivers.
Whether that helps Rivers find them I don’t know – but whatever the reason it obviously works.
As for Brees/Brady and Manning. Well I actually think they’re slightly different. Manning and Brees certainly make their receivers look better than they are (Wayne aside – he’s awesome). Brady – I think his HC/FO do a great job of finding players with a particular skill set and tailoring the offence around them. He’s still a very good QB – but not quite in Manning/Brees/Rivers’ league imo (though his trophy cabinet would beg to differ).
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
It's a feature in TACO
Norv Turner designed the system with bigger receivers in mind. No accident that guys like VJ and Malcolm Floyd were used by the Chargers.
I think when Brady got hurt and his back up stepped up and performed greatly...
It did sort of so just how good the HC’s system was. I too think he is good but not the goat, as some want to throw at his feet.

First time I've ever heard someone say Brady wasn't as good as Rivers.
I don’t know if I agree, especially considering how impressive his numbers were last season.
I think he's saying to somewhat disregard the numbers.
Considering Matt Cassel put up good numbers in the system. I don’t think he’s saying that Tom Brady isn’t a great QB, just that the system makes him appear better than what he is.
Personally I don’t think it’s an outlandish opinion, and one that has some merit to it.

I didn't completely disregard it.
I don’t think I’d agree RIGHT NOW, but there is certainly some merit to it.
I will say that I find it somewhat contradictory that everyone lauds credit to Brady for “succeeding with a bunch of no-names” while the no-name receivers in San Diego last year are considered somehow better. Ah well.
YESSSSSSSS!
I called for him last year… LOVE IT! Sure handed receiver.

I don’t how it worked out and the front office has in it’s plans. I trust them and I’m very excited for the upcoming season but how is it that we went after a wide receiver over CB when apparently Carlos Rogers only got a one year deal. They must be feeling really confident with whom we have.

John Fox was a great coach.
He built the team in the image he wanted and they performed amazingly. Unfortunately, he wasn’t adept at adapting to things, which seems like a must in the NFL. I don’t care for all the vitriol that is spewed in his direction considering all he did for this franchise, though I agree that his time had passed. If he wants to stick around in Denver, he needs to learn change with his players.
He is a good coach a decade ago. Either he gets with the times or his time in Denver will be short lived.

While I’d agree with Jake Humphrey that he’s more of a good coach, “terrible” HCs don’t bring teams to Championship Games and Super Bowls.
If he couldn't adapt to things
Then he wasn’t a great coach. Was/is he a good one? Yup, but the great ones change as needed.

If I recall correctly..
Naanee caught something like 80% of passes thrown his way. Granted he only had 30 or 40 receptions, it was still a crazy percentage. This was a year ago that I researched and the stats are no longer available to me to confirm (ProFootballFocus) so I may be off slightly but I remember being impressed by it.

Does anyone know that Naanee was arrested for public intoxication and resisting arrest at the scene of a homicide in Indianapolis on February 12th, 2011? Interesting. If we were going to go after someone with a criminal record, Braylon Edwards may have been a better choice. What do you all think?

It's amazing how much more Santonio Holmes got paid than Edwards
when the talent levels between the two isn’t really all that large.
I remember a comment from James awhile back that showed his drop concerns were overblown.
His production was actually quite good.
Holmes is a much better receiver than Edwards.
They’re only a year apart in age Holmes (27), Edwards (28), but Edwards plays like he’s old. Cut’s backflips like a kid though. For some reason, his athleticism doesn’t show up in his play.

Because it's very hit and miss.
I want my offence to consistently move the chains, not grind it out on the ground then take a shot downfield. I’m sick of that.
Just watch the Colts/Saints etc – they hit you on every level in the passing game, not just deep.

Fox's offense opens up from brining people in for the run and play action
The Coryell opens up by consistent deep threats allowing a lot of space in the middle. Requires the QB to hit deep throws to honor it, though.
That offense was installed by Dan Henning
He learned it from Joe Gibbs, who was Coryell’s OC in San Diego.

It really was quite the coup by the FO
for a 3rd round pick? doesnt get much better than landing a pro-bowl caliber TE who is still very young for that low a price. Possibly best trade in Panther history as long as he continues to live up to his billing.

Just think if this was a 3rd and down situation with 1:00 left to go in the 4th and us up by 3 pts, this one move right here would have sealed the win because it got us a 1st down
From watching it looks like he got lost in where he was at. That he was at practice wearing a red shirt. But yeah he might want to lay off stuff like that with his throwing arm..#1 pick to injure himself not good

the variable starts.
quarterbacks are necessary. i really like the kid, but Clausen is a quarterback. you can argue Brees, Brady, and Manning are quarterbacks, but they are something more. you can argue Steve Smith is a wide receiver, but again, i will say he is something more.
cam newton is something else, something more than just a quarterback.

i know it's partly that he's closer to the camera...
but Cam just looks like a giant out there
easy to be tall when most are squating
height doesn’t have much to do in making of “starting” quarterback, quality does. pure playing quality. not sure, but if statistics point toward taller QBs (which even I would believe it to be), there is still a number of shorter QBs who have succeeded.
and so far, i’d kind of say Clausen has had better quality… more days, though. let’s see what happens.

that's how you connect with a fan
no knowing if he did a quick wiki trip on Carolina Panthers, but the end does not matter. he meant to connect with the fan, and even if his end was to create attention (doesn’t sound like it, in this case), he wants to be a part of the talk, of the community.

Then blast Hurney and go on to say Brown is on the verge of becoming a Sack Master….Really? As much as i love that to be true Brown has shown nothing that leads me to believe that is even remotely plausible. To finish it all off says we are the worst team in the leauge..told his friend in NC this team is nearly as bad as the 0-16 Lions. REALLY! And good news we will go 3-13 have the worst record again end up with the #1 pick and take Andrew Luck who is apparently hiding from and spend back to back #1 picks on a QB. Honestly if given the opportunity id kick this dude in the nuts repeatedly until my foot started to hurt then id switch legs.

I would give you a rest break.
It is clear he put only enough thought into the aritical to know the slim basics of last year team. His breakdown of Hurney shows just how little he knows of the team, or the moves that JR did to protect the employees of the team. Reading the artical leaves me knowing that he was no where near objective and detached from his subject matter to give anything close to a proffesional breakdown.
