Final cuts get Panthers to 80
Tony Pike (waived/injured), Duke Robinson, Chris Massey were the final cuts to bring the Panthers roster to 80 today along with Cletis Gordon and the rest of the IR troop who joined him today.
Pike was never a fit for Rob Chudzinski's offense as he simply doesn't have the arm needed to succeed. That being said, he's a nice guy and hopefully will find a role on an NFL team that run an offense that can better suit his abilities. He's a true short pass type guy, and those players can find roles as backups. I suspect someone will take a flier on Pike to be their third stringer.
Duke Robinson is the disappointment in this group because he had so much promise. One time thought to be a potential 'steal of the draft' type player, in the end Robinson showed every bit of why he slipped as far as he did. A poor work ethic, constantly being out of shape and failing to impress in practice overshadowed his abilities as an extremely effective run blocker on occasion. What is further frustrating is that if Robinson had only applied himself I have no doubt he'd be the team's starting RG now in the wake of the Geoff Schwartz injury, but c'est la vie.

I feel sorry for Pike
He never really got a chance in Carolina. He came into a bad situation that only got worse. I was disappointed last year when he wasn’t given the chance to start while Moore and Clausen were both injured. I don’t think he would have faired any better than they did but I just wish he had been given the chance.

He also got that late start didnt he?
wasn’t he in a school that had a different timeline from the draft so he had to wait till his class graduated b4 he could go to training camps?

C'est la vie, it is what it is, that's life: all = shit happens, and there's nothing you can do about it.
All these are stoic acceptances of fate, which are scoffed at by the movers and shakers of societies and civilizations, who feel they were born to change things, and not merely accept them as they happen.
Think Howard Beale, played by Oscar winner Peter Finch, in “Network,” who uttered the famous line, “I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it any more!”
Of course, as in his case, sometimes the struggle doesn't succeed, but he didn't take it lying down.
So long noodle arm, we hardly knew thee,
no harm in Hurney taking a 6th round flyer on Pike but in the end he just doesn’t have the arm to play in a vertical offense. He needs to get in the gym and bulk up a bit if he wants to make it in the NFL.
As for Duke….sigh….go eat another cheeseburger and stop frustrating me with your failed potential.

Are we expecting
much action along the waiver wire front today? I’m anxious to see how all this shakes out.
"I’m not superstitious, but I am a little stitious."
Do you go
to the bottom of the waivers when you pick up a player?
Or are the panthers at the top of the waivers until week one?
In other words if panthers and Bears both claim Player A and Player B. Do the panthers get both? Or do Panthers get A, then drop down to the bottom of the order, and Bears get B…
I’ve been looking online but haven’t found an answer, but maybe I’m wording my question wrong…
Could be wrong
but I think the Panthers are on top of the waiver until week one starts

Seemed like its through week 4
I think I read that here somewhere, but I read so much stuff could be wrong, and it was for something else!!! but until I’m corrected- I’m right-haha
No big surprises here.
Duke and Pike were worth their late round picks to see if we could find a diamond in the rough. Look how many important contributors we have found in the 4th and beyond. They can’t all be golden eggs.
You see these low work ethic but high talent guys (like Duke) and these great college QBs with big flaws in their game (like Pike) and hope that NFL level coaching, physical training, and money can shape and motivate them into a decent pro, but like so many things in life the best indicator of future gains is past performance.
I know this, we need to address the OL depth in free agency immediately, and we probably need to spend a high round pick on a versatile OL next year in the draft. We need to plan for the future when you are playing with guys getting older (Gross) and others who are injury prone (Otah).

The guy explodes around that corner with speed, no standing and spinning. You’re def right that he needs to be on the LT though, RT fatties would eat him alive due to leverage.

Cut the one Brown and sign the other. E. Brown has had every opportunity to make this team and to play well. Guess what: he has only proven he cannot hold down his side of the field. Cut him and let him find someplace else where he might be able to thrive.
Sign A. Brown as a backup in case the Kraken can’t quite shore up the other side of the line. Having A. Brown would instantly upgrade our DE corps IMO.

Following the Dallas Cowboys’ decision to release veteran center Andre Gurode on Monday, the speculation ramped up quickly as to where the former All-Pro (and No. 57 on the NFL Network’s list of Top 100 Players of 2011) will land next.
According to ESPN’s John Clayton, six teams have already called, inquiring on his services. First up is the Seattle Seahawks, and there’s a familiar face on the staff: OL coach Tom Cable, with whom Gurode worked in college.
There’s no guarantee that Gurode will sign quickly, but given the fast response to his availability, it appears that he’ll have several options from which to choose.

Still I don’t care for drafting a Top 5 guy just to put him at a position he isn’t used to playing at. If we had the pick to get him with, I would probably pull the trigger and get him. But I just don’t like drafting someone like him just to play him on the opposite side of the line.
Perhaps I am getting ahead of myself with this, but that is how I feel.
Proud Member of Cat Scratch Reader and coiner of the (minus Bowers) meme
If he is a better NFL LT than Gross (let's see how Gross does this season) then sure.
But plenty of rookies move from LT to RT or RT to RG for their first year. Its about getting your best 5 on the field.
"I don't know whatchu came to do...but IIIIIIIIIIIIII came to praise his name, yeyuss!!
~Reverend Brown, Coming to America
If he were there when we picked, we’d be foolish not to get him, even if we have to play him at RT for a year. He’s a future franchise LT…those don’t come around that often.
But, I wouldn’t trade up into the top 5 just to get him.
The truth will set you free, but not until it is finished with you. ~David Foster Wallace
To be fair, it does depend on where we pick.
I mean if we’re in the top 10, I’d be willing to throw our 1st and a 2nd or 4th to move up to get him. But if we’re picking 18th, the price would probably be too steep.
Although, if he stays healthy and projects like everyone thinks he will, the “next Joe Thomas” would be a nice fit on our OL.
The truth will set you free, but not until it is finished with you. ~David Foster Wallace
I think the reality is, we could be picking 5.
I think it will be a fun season that’s full of hope and excitement, but we may struggle to close out games. I mean when we finished 7-9 in 2002 we were picking 11.

Not that he can be the end all be all at the RG position, but it seems like that’s the position he’s gonna have to play if he wants to stay in the league. (And we used a draft pick on the kid, albeit a 7th rounder.)
