Heart sinking... Kasay close to signing with Saints
It shouldn't be like this... it just shouldn't. There's no way John Kasay's career should end anywhere else but Carolina, but unfortunately that just wasn't in the cards. This from Scott Fowler's twitter feed a few minutes ago
scott_fowler
BREAKING NEWS: John Kasay is close to contract with the New Orleans Saints very soon, says my NFL source.
This really is a heart-breaking close to Kasay's career if you're a Carolina Panthers' fan. For Kasay, more power to him, if an NFL team believes he can still kick and contribute then he should absolutely still be playing in this league. There are few players with the same level of class that Kasay exhibited while in Carolina, typified by the heartfelt letter he wrote to fans following being cut by the team.
Anyone else afraid of a nightmare scenario where we're looking at Kasay wearing a different jersey hoping he'll shank a game winner? I can't even bear the thought.

I agree the hardest thing will be routing for him to miss a kick
if you make something idiot proof, the world will make a better idiot.
Don't worry...I have a plan LK
Since I had Garrett Hartley on my FFL team I’ll pick up Kasay and he’s sure to stink then.
Nice save Jaxon!
Way to take one for the team.

Probably
But I found it much easier than I’d thought pulling for a Gerald Wallace brick this past season, too.

What wrong with Garrett Hartley?
Is this a permanent move or is he going to be a rent-a-leg?

I'm just saying if we play the saints and it comes down to a field goal for the game
and Kasay hits it that would be MAJOR salt in the wound many of us are feeling from his cut…
OMG I wouldn't even be able to watch.

I mean… the man has gotta do what he has gotta do, but of course this is going to be tough on all Panther fans.
He could have gone anywhere else in the NFL, and I would have been okay, but to a division rival? That means we have to see him twice a year.
This saddens me deeply.

Mostly because he’s going to the Saints. I wish him well regardless. If we lose by a field goal to them it will definitely sting, but it also means that we had other chances to win the game. I can live with that. Good luck Kasay!!!

because it is safe to say that the Madden gurus don't REALLY know that much about offensive linemen.
They tend to take OL ratings as a whole, and if they know of a special player rate him highly. The rest of the JAGs on the line get appropriate grades based on line performance such as sacks allowed and rushing yards gained.

Is this really that big of a deal?
It’s not like he left via Free Agency and signed with one of our biggest rivals. We cut him. If the man can go out and find work after being fired, so be it. Besides, I highly doubt that we’ll be tied or up by less than 3 points at the end of either game with the Saints.
We were down by two with a chance to win last season.
No its not a big deal. But it is certainly note-worthy.

Those asking Kasay how-so...
…need to get a grip. The team cut him, not he left at te end of a contract. The man has a family and has to provide. So what if it is to the Saints? The organization showed him no loyalty; he is not beholden to any of us.
If he hits a game winner vs. Carolina I will chalk it up to karma.

The organization showed him no loyalty
What was done was done for the right reasons. Kasay was a great teammate and kicker at one time. But how many years do we let a roster spot rot because a kicker can’t KICK off. Their is more to the game then just FG’s. It was tough to see him go. Even more so it is to the Aints. But i can understand the business move 100%

Not too mention...
we kept him with the team when he missed almost two full seasons of work due to injury in 2000-2001 and Joe Nedney was putting up career accuracy numbers with us. How many kickers these days enjoy THAT kind of loyalty? Kicker and Punter are the two positions with the most turnover in the entire league (dare we mention one of the most accurate kickers out there right now stats wise is Shayne Graham, and he just got cut by the redskins in favor of a guy who seems to miss half his kicks?)

So, every kicker is elected for kick off duty?
….I’ll do the research and provide a list, but I’m sure with a scan of rosters you’ll see a collection of punters that do the kick-off duties. The job goes to the best kicker/punter for the job in most camps.

I do believe I was reacting knee-jerk...
…while waiting for my Dr. appt to finally happen, two hours after the fact.
Honestly Kasay was treated with loyalty from this franchise, and the move was to be made if the punter could not be depended on for kickoff coverage.
That’s what gets me; some of you saying the kicker has to do this job, when in the past it was the better of the two kicking special teamers that did the job. Unfortunately for Kasay the decision was easy to make against him with the present makeup of the special teams. Life goes on.
