CSR Blogger Reports from Panthers Training Camp
i am back at this year at training camp, and will post updates as i can throughout the evening. I'm writing this from my phone so I apologize for how this appears. Also I have my son with me so I might not be that frequent with my updates.
Here's some of tonight's highlights from Little King:
i havent been to that many evening pratices
But there are definately more people out here. Although it could be the cam affect
clausen to shocley across middle
But now no o or d lines
More after the jump...
deep to smith
nice placement for the TD
cross route by 10
1 (Newton) hits in stride
A sign from the Gods?
a chinok (sp?) just circled the field, it was low
Pretty cool,
Now Panther fan in Ga takes over:
At practice,too
Live fire starting – 11 on 11. Cam with the ones
cams 1st play a pass
Should have been picked
Clausen In...
Clausen deep to Wright
TD – got behind Munnerlyn and Godfrey, too.
Don't like how this ends:
Cam to 89 across middle
Plenty of zip – off target low. Smitty dives and comes up slowly – sort of limps off.
We got options returning punts:
starting punts and catches
Munnerlyn, Armanti and 19 (who?) catching them. Munnerlyn looks solid – Armanti almost looks non-chalant. Much better than last year at getting under the ball.
End of report
Panthers Fan Confidence Poll
Last tallied on 08/03.

did AE take many kickoffs last year?
its a whole diff animal than PR’s, way less pressure to make the catch, time to get AE up to speed
Not a single kick return, if I remember correctly...
Just triple checked; noting in that stat column on sports-reference.com (I can’t recommend this site enough), NFL.com, or ESPN.com
Newton for '11 ROY!
Walker for '11 ROY!
Biyombo for '11 DPOY!
My bad i guess i was thinking Punt returns. Kick off will be limited impact this season with the rule changes. Maybe with his speed he could take out deep of the endzone and make it up i dunno. We well see

yeah i forgot about the 35 yard line mma
maybe when the winter winds blow in dec. and january. pigskin gets harder to kick then… i wonder why the NFL did that. sounds like less excitement to me. player safety?
yeah long wind up on Kick Offs so they shortened the distance. New kicker we got is really good at kick offs. Big reason we got rid of Kasay. Touch backs aren’t his specialty.

yeah i was thinking similar…Id much rather have to worry about a traditional QB who struggled last year then the unconventional Newton.

But the Romo/Brady thing may be a bit out there for me.
I think it was a insult b/c Romo and Brady collapse under pressure but i agree i don’t think you should mention Clausen’s name in position with either men even in a negative.

I'm having trouble with my CSR pages the past 2 days
The article will come up with a partial download, but the comments don’t come up. The processing feed says “transferring data from facebook.com” but it continues to process and never comes up.
I wouldn’t mind just redoing it. Problem is, I lose the yellows, because the page has already partially downloaded. Which is problematic on a page with alot of old/new comments.
Any thoughts?
It’s never happened until yest.

all i got is turn by turn
Fom I-85 North – Take I-85 North to exit 72 (I-585). At the end of the exit ramp, turn right toward Spartanburg. Cross over Business I-85. I-585 becomes Pine Street into Spartanburg. After crossing over Business I-85, turn right onto Twitty Street and into training camp at the second stoplight. Free parking is provided at the top of the hill on the right of Twitty Street. The practice fields are on the left, and the Panthers Experience is located between the practice fields and Gibbs Stadium.

From what I'm reading on twitter
Clausen is making improvements and Cam is sounding like a rookie. Clausen is 4/4 and Cam is 3/5 and forced a pass to Shockey that should’ve been picked (but it sounds like Clausen is only throwing around the 20 yard line sooo maybe that’s why he’s playing good)

The guy was doing very well for us last preseason until he got injured. I expect him to be a big competitor for the #6 spot.
That spot is going to be one hell of a competition. We got a lot of WR’s loaded up

will depend on
if other backups also excel in ST’s. if they do, he’s still susceptible to being cut, because he’s really not needed in our passing game bar an injury or two
Wright was brought in for his special team skills
anything else is a bonus.
JC getting better makes the Panthers a much better team, for sure.
but……is it true?? time will tell, in the preseason games
id think that would be a big claim chatoka…but if he impresses that much i can deff live with it. I want best chance to win.

I dont see it that way JC is doing what JC has always done. Dump it off to the closest WR before getting pancaked.

Where was this logic when Cam was completing some nice throws?
by SlayerGhaleon on Aug 3, 2011 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions
To be honest
i realy dont know. I thought Jimmy was working with the # 1 but Cam threw a touchdown to Smitty and Clausen threw a touchdown to Wright so I have no clue
Maybe Clausen just wasn't in the right offensive system last year
Passing to TE’s and RB’s and quick routes, was barely in Fox’s playbook. However that sounds exactly like Jimmy’s strengths. Maybe… Just maybe… Clausen might be a better fit for the offense Chud’s been installing???
STEVE SMITH!
Wouldn’t be surprised. He excelled in the WCO in college.
by SlayerGhaleon on Aug 3, 2011 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions
in chud's last interview, he made a special point of
saying they’d be implementing an offense geared to the strengths of our players, not just a Chud system
Regardless it's nice to have an OC that has more than one thing to implement
Fox always did the same crap no matter who the personal was.
STEVE SMITH!
The system relies on deep throws to open up the middle of the field
Its how the system creates mismatches on the receiving TE: Safety can’t come down and help the LBs because of the consistent threat on the deep routes.
Where did you hear there's a "consistent threat on deep routes"?
I mean, other than your own logic? Of course every team will go deep occasionally, but.all the camp reports I hear suggest that’s NOT the bread and butter of what they are implementing.
STEVE SMITH!
I don't see anything like that on panthers.com
Other than this… http://goo.gl/6P61c
Which he just says the offense will be aggressive and balanced… nothing like using a consistent deep threat to setup other plays.
I’m not saying you’re wrong… I just want to read about it.
STEVE SMITH!
Then google Air Coryell
I’m not here to provide a thesis on offenses that we’ve already been over, but I guess I will since people appear to be lazy and uninformed:
Per the ever famous <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/whttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coryell_offenseiki/Coryell_offense" target="new">Wikipedia:
Overall the goal of the Coryell offense is to have at least two downfield, fast wide receivers who adjust to the deep pass very well, combined with a sturdy pocket quarterback with a strong arm. The Coryell offense uses three key weapons. The first is a strong inside running game, the second is its ability to strike deep with two or more receivers on any play, and the third is to not only use those two attack in cooperation with each other, but to include a great deal of mid-range passing to a TE, WR, or back.
As someone stated in a previous thread, the term West Coast is a misnomer. It was originally used to refer to such an offense, but is now commonly linked to a spread short pass offense that dinks and dunks. When players keep saying West Coast, they are not saying we are going to be the 2010 Rams. There are two West Coast offenses, and the Coryell is the one that doesn’t follow the current nomenclature.
Have you not heard all the reports that Chud is customizing the offense to fit inexperienced rookie QB's, and Cam's unique strengths?
John Fox and the days of running one system despite personel, are long gone. Is the Coryell an option offense? Nope… but guess what? It will be for us when Cam is behind center. I think you’re mistaken if you think our playbook is Coryell verbatim.
STEVE SMITH!
No shit
But that doesn’t mean we’re running a NO spread 80% of the time because we have Clausen as a QB, it means we’re working in a few packages for those players specialties. People are hearing the term West Coast from players descriptions and getting confused, if you read the posts in this thread you’d see that. What they fail to grasp, is in those conversations, its been followed by the word “terminology” or “numbering,” and the topic has been adjusting to the new offense. They are referring to different terminology (as different offense trees have a different basis), not what fans refer to as a West Coast Offense.
Backup a sec... Here's all I'm saying...
I’m sure Chud would love nothing more than for Cam to be able to stand tall in the pocket and consistently deliver deep balls like Philip Rivers. But he’s not Rivers. He’s a rookie with unique running ability. Therefore, as the camp reports suggest, the bread an butter of the 2011 Panther offense will be running the ball and easy passes… Hence the signing of 2 premier TE’s.
Now, I’ll I’m saying is that maybe Clausen is better with those mid-short range passes that we keep hearing have been added to create a more inexperienced QB offense.
STEVE SMITH!

K, I see where you're going
I still feel Clausen needs to prove himself on deep routes for those short-mid options to be open. Even if the play is called for a pass for short gain, the defenses won’t give you those passes unless you open up the field. As an example, NE gets huge chunks on swing passes to RBs out of the backfield. The reason he’s able to do this is their system has a WR clear out the area prior to the RB timed release and swing pass. If the WR running that route isn’t a threat b/c Brady can’t reasonably sling it deep, that RB will not have room for his YAC. Even if Clausen is good at short-mid range passes, those guys aren’t going to get open if he can’t sling the ball deep in the system that’s being deployed. The safeties will stay closer and help the LBs on TE and run coverage, and thus you have poor YPC, poor completion percentage, and a cluttered run game. To address that issue would require a complete revamp of the type of offensive plays we’d be running, and I just don’t see it happening.
I think our offense will look more similar to Gus Malzahn's than Coryell's.
At least for much of Cam’s first season. Obviously Cam will be under center more than he was in Malzahn’s offense, but either way, I will be surprised to see him attempt more than 20-22 passes a game, on average.
We resigned D-Will for a reason. We are going to pound teams now that Otah is back and our backs are healthy. With that said, hopefully we will not see the same slow starts with the running game that we have seen under Fox.
"I don't know whatchu came to do...but IIIIIIIIIIIIII came to praise his name, yeyuss!!

One thing I loved about him as a prospect, and something I saw flashes of even last year.
was his mid-range accuracy and ability to squeeze it into tight windows. From what I hear Chud loves to use intermediate crossing routes. I think if Clausen can correct his other issues like poor pocket presence and general skittishness he could really prove himself a valuable trading chip/quality #2 QB.

I think we should slow down here on Clausen. The guy has had one decent day throwing (from what I can tell) mainly short passes. He didn’t do well in the previous practices. I’m not ready to say he will be anything more than a backup, just like I am not willing to crown Cam as ROY.
This is the early days of training camp, and our main starters on D are almost all waiting for that August 4th date to get back on the field. Perhaps this hypothetical thinking will have more credence after the 3rd preseason game comes around.

Why have two QB’s that are number one calibur why not get some value for him at the end of next season I dont see that as dumb. If clausen shows some flashes we may get some other pieces to help this football team.
The stupid part is just picking Clausen automatically despite on field results. Oldham put it best. You let them compete in the offseason, then whoever doesn’t win you put on the trading block.
by SlayerGhaleon on Aug 3, 2011 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions
IF, and thats a big IF...
Clausen turns out to be a good QB, and Newton progresses into the QB we all hope for, you have to test both on the trading block and see who brings the most value. Are you telling me that if Newton can bring 2 1st’s an Clausen can only bring a 2nd..or vice versa..we should still keep one over the other? You have to see whats out there..accepting that possibly taking the lesser of the two could be best for the team..

How did that Rivers Brees sitch work out?
My point is, if they both turn out to be really good QB’s but some other team strongly coovets one over the other, then you get the most value not necessarily trade the one you like least.. Especially with the rookie wage scale..you can really improve your team for years on the cheap with solid 1st round picks.

If you think for a second that they’d trade Newton over Clausen… Mercy.
The best we can hope for is a Brees-Rivers situation…But the way things are running now, Clausen’s going to have to play 2 or 3 times better than Cam to beat him out. And if Clausen plays like a Pro Bowler and Cam plays like (whatever your favorite euphemism is for terrible), you’re not going to get any trade value for him anyway.

We have no reason to discuss this
Clausen has shown no reason to have any value in a trade whatsoever just like notsobig said Clausen would have to improve substantially over last year. I have no doubt he is playing better than Newton in camp now. He is coming off of almost a full NFL season, he should be leaps and bounds ahead of Newton. I think what surprises me is that it is so close of a competition. I think that’s why Newton will get the nod at the start of the season.
JC had a better practice today.
but in camp so far? Cam has played better, from the reports I’ve heard. Jimmy has had a couple of terrible practices, moreso than Cam
I'm thinking...
It was Joe Person who said that Clausen has had the better camp so far. Cam has had a lot of really awesome throws and some really awful picks. Exactly what we should expect from a rookie.
If Newton turns out to be not as good as they hope, they will. Mindlessly sticking to a paradigm was a Fox trademark.

shouldn't clausen outplay cam anyway
with one year already under the belt? not to be on either side, but clausen does know (in a way) how the game’s played in nfl speed. whether clausen starts or not, i think the organization knows who their guy is anyway, but if clausen ends up out-playing cam and plays very solid this season, it still puts us in a very nice spot for the offseason next year. by next year, if clausen plays well, he’ll just have that much value for trade or to keep. even if the organization decides to go another direction and looks for buyers in cam newton, he will still have very good value in my opinion as he wasn’t the most “nfl ready” player in the draft anyway.
all in all, i welcome the qb competition. may the best win over the starting job and take us to the superbowl, please.

All in all, we are the fans and we can all be happy when we start winning. If drafting cam was the catalyst to clausen who ends up playing like a pro-bowler, that’s awesome. If cam takes us to the playoffs, that’s cool too. It is a performance-driven league, and whoever can take us to the promised land, whether it’s clausen, supercam, moses or tim tebow, I will fully support the man.
I definitely understand where the clausen vs cam debate is coming from, but it is “what have you done for me lately” league. unfortunately, talents aside, neither have done much yet.

It was great.....
I was there from about 6 til 9 and it was pretty impressive! Cam through a amazing block for Stewart, he did throw a int. but……cant complain. Jimmy did surprisingly good, he looked very very confident. Smitty wasnt as energized with the fans as usual. He didnt say nothing while signing autographs or even crack a smile! Beast on the other hand was great! He was joking around laughing, smiling and taking pictures. I got about 4 autographs Beast, Armanti, Brown, Wharton. I think il be there all week so I will update as much as I can also!
Can we at least give TC another couple of weeks here before we start crowning Clausen as a pro bowler? For crying out loud people…

I'd say this is more a reflection
of the 2nd string defense we are playing. Won’t be the same with CJ, Beast, Anderson and Gamble out there. Rivera was not kidding, we have a long way to go.
We didn't draft Cam #1 to sit behind Clausen.......................
And he is clearly the superior pysical specimen and athlete. So unless Clausen outplays him say 10:1 Jimmy will be on the bench. However, there’s always the possibility of injury, so if Clausen signficantly improves it gives us some insurance, along with Anderson. This may be as deep as we’ve been at QB in a number of years and I think it’s great. Remember Wienke and David Carr when our top QB goes down?
Cam will get coached up and be fine. There will be growing pains. Think Vince Young, without being a head case.
I can't wait for the Chicken Littles later on today

Do ya'll think we'll see
Clausen and Cam on the field at the same time?
With Cam’s unique abilities and physical traits, he can play RB, WR, TE. Clausen can pass to Cam in the flat, pulling the defense in, then bombing it to Smitty or Gettis or running it up the field.
I know we’ve talked about doing this type of play with Armanti and DWill (he’s talked about it himself). The only reason I see to not do this is it increases risk of injury to Cam.
No.
Armanti could do whatever they would have Clausen do, except he can still run if the play breaks down.
