An Early Panthers Camp 2-Deep Depth Chart
Joe Person psoted on Charlotte.com the Panthers two-deep depth chart, with one change. I think he has the back-up tackles in the wrong spot. Just as we discussed on the radio show last night we will look at the surprise developments on several positions
The Panthers two-deep depth chart:
OFFENSE
QB – Cam Newton/Jimmy Clausen
TB – DeAngelo Williams/Jonathan Stewart
FB – Tony Fiammetta/Ben Hartsock - Indicates the Panthers will only keep one FB
WR – Steve Smith/Armanti Edwards - Will Edwards run in the slot?
WR – David Gettis/Brandon LaFell - Speed over size
TE – Jeremy Shockey/Greg Olsen
LT – Jordan Gross/Lee Ziemba Garry Williams
LG – Travelle Wharton/Zack Williams
C – Ryan Kalil/Mackenzy Bernadeau - MacBern has to get better at snapping the ball to stick here
RG – Geoff Schwartz/Duke Robinson - Robinson getting his last shot?
RT – Jeff Otah/Garry Williams Lee Ziemba - I definitely prefer the rook at RT
Defense & ST...after the jump...
DEFENSE
DE – Charles Johnson/Eric Norwood
DT – Ron Edwards/Sione Fua
DT – Terrell McClain/Nick Hayden - Nemblett has to be breathing down Hayden's neck
DE – Everette Brown/Greg Hardy - Will Brown start once Hardy gets back?
OLB – James Anderson/Omar Gaither - Gaither is a McDermott favorite
MLB – Jon Beason/Dan Connor
OLB – Thomas Davis/Lawrence Wilson
CB – Chris Gamble/R. J. Stanford - The first of two 7th round picks to fill out our nickel & dime packages
CB – Captain Munnerlyn/Robert McClain
SS – Sherrod Martin/Sean Considine - Where's Kenny Payne?
FS – Charles Godfrey/Jordan Pugh
SPECIAL TEAMS
P – Jason Baker/Anthony Santella

burney
I think burney has been making some big plays and being fairly consistent in practice.
Newton Declared Starter Already?
Is this an official depth chart or just speculation?
I’m not a Clausen fan at all other than the fact that he plays for Carolina but I find it hard to believe they would declare Newton the starter after two full pads practices. I thought they would have a competition. But I also figured that Newton would win out in the end because of sheer athletic ability and the fact that Clausen sucks.
IT AIN'T SIZE OF THE DOG IN THE FIGHT BUT THE SIZE OF THE FIGHT IN THE DOG
This is speculation...
Probably based mainly on what was seen last season from some players, and also based on reports from people at camp.

jimmy has been first with the 1st team offense.
they have kinda begun as JC 1A and SUPERCAM 1B
i look for Cam to start week 1 preseason. RR is trying hard to be diplomatic and compliment JC, but it’s obvious to everyone who our #1 QB is, it’s just a matter of (not very much) time before it’s made official, IMO
I think you're making a LOT of assumptions
I don’t think RR is trying to be diplomatic, I think he realizes he has an athletic stud unlike the game has ever seen at QB…but he’s a rookie AND has serious accuracy issues. If RR is a good HC at all, he’s noncommittal at this point; he has a QB with no NFL experience, one with a single bad year at the helm, and one with experience in the system, but with massive questions about his ability.
If he’s already made his decision for a week 1 starter, he’s not the HC we think/hope he is.
I didn't realize that BW was at camp yesterday...

But seriously, I think you are right with switching the backup OTs. I think you need to switch Norwood and Hardy as well—Hardy behind Johnson and Norwood behind Brown (for now).
The starting safeties need to be switched, as well. Godfrey at strong Martin at free.

The guys backing up the #2 corner and wide receiver
are actually the slot/nickel guys. So, LaFell is our slot receiver and Armanti is our 4th option. On the other side, McClain is our nickel back and R.J. Stanford is our dime back. Overall, I’m pretty content with the depth chart. It is evident that the new coaching staff is more competent than the former coaching staff. Can’t wait for August 13!
Olsen is probably 2nd just because he hasn't practiced with the team
I’m sure he’ll be the starter going into first preseason game. Shockey is too past his prime to be ahead of Olsen. Plus if Shockey is to be a contributor for 16 games, then we’d better limit his minutes… Maybe more of a Ricky Proehl type role.

i wouldn’t be shocked when the season is done if Olsen isn’t 2nd on the team in receptions. Guy has great hands and is very consistent. I could see Newton/or whoever starts going to him early and often to get things going

I hope so...
I’ve said it before but I really love how this offense seems to be being built to chew up clock time. I’m completely fine with taking 5-10 yard chunks all day long!
The longer we can keep the Brees, Ryan and Freeman on the bench the better chance we have, not to mention this defense will be nasty if they get time to rest.
I think keeping the Running backs and bringing it blocking TE shows we are still going to be a run first team. Good TE and strong running game is any QB’s best friend especially guys so young. I think we will be a bruiser football team on both sides of the ball. Hit you in the mouth type football. Can’t wait to see this team gel under this system. I think we have the chance to be really really good. Least our division rivals wont know what we are going to do every game…Like Beason said they are going to have to start doing some homework now. We were too Vanilla in years past. No creativity nothing ever different we ran our system to a default.
"I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them." - George Bush
"I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant." - Robert McCloskey
Indeed
I’m very excited to see some wrinkles on both sides of the ball that may actually confusing the opposing team.
And yes, it certainly does look like we are going to retain focus on the run game (which I like too), but Shockey and Olsen both bring the short passing game as well. If we start killing defenses with the running game and the short passes to TE’s that is only going to open up Gettis, Lafell and Smith down the field.
but in this league now,
seems like you have to pass to set up the run sometimes. it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that teams continue to put 8 in the box until we give them reason not to. so this year’s passing game will have to be improved to avoid a repeat of last year’s rushing game being really not very good (because of the 8 in the box)
Right...
But if those 8 in the box just crash in on our line and RB’s like they did last year Shockey and Olsen should be wide open over the middle.
When they start taking a couple guys to make sure Shockey and Olsen covered thats going to open up Smith/Gettis/Lafell as well as take pressure of the RB’s.
until our QB can prove he'll make the defense pay...
…we’re going to see 8 in the box all the time. Granted, I’d like to see us play a lot of 5 receiver sets on 1st and 2nd down, just to force more of a prevent defense so Cam can make some things happen with his legs if the defense puts 7 or 8 in coverage to handle the receivers.
I agree man
we are going to be a smashmouth football team next year with the occasional big play. Anyone remember the dolphins going 1-15 a few years ago then the next year they went 10-6? They followed that smashmouth football mentality and made the playoff. Although they had a better qb in Chad Pennington than we will have this year, I believe that we have a much more talented roster than those dolphins did.
Chewing up clock time
I do believe that was John Fox’s strategy, which is why we ran so much. Not saying we shouldn’t do that, because it is the right strategy.
The difference will be that Fox used the run for short gains to move the chains and then set up the play action long bomb.
Rivera will get those short gains with short passes and runs. All the short passes will hopefully stretch the field and let the run game break into the open field more often.
True
But Fox’s problem was when it wasn’t working he stuck to the plan instead of trying something different.
That and our TE situation wasn’t nearly as good as it will be this year. I think that alone takes a ton of pressure off the QB, RB’s and WR’s.
Similar strategy but more modern and effective. Fox stuck with his system regardless of down and distance or how the game was going. im sure we could pass or run on any down under this system which really helps keep the defense on their toes.
"I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them." - George Bush
"I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant." - Robert McCloskey
Yea, I can't wait
to see us do something creative and unpredictable for a change.
Fox’s system did not set us up for any play other than play action.
Remember the play last year where we actually tried using AE by having him streak across the backfield and tried running it (like Smitty would do now and then)? That play seemed like it was just thrown in there, with no strategy as to when to use it. The other team saw AE in the game for the first time in the season and Captain Obvious basically latched on to AE’s back.
This year I expect more moving parts, more deception, more options. It will be great.
I wouldn't be shocked if Olsen has more receptions than anyone on the team by the end of the year
I don’t think he’ll have the most yardage, but I see him overpowering safeties and outrunning LB’s for 7-11 yard gains.
Like the list

yeah out of everything secondary worries me the most. In a pass happy league and a division with stud QB’s we are going to have to rush the QB A LOT. Get pressure get knockdowns and sacks. If not we could be carved up on a regular basis

"I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant." - Robert McCloskey
i don't think they are clueless that are secondary lacks depth
It’s Aug. 3, not Sept. 3, so I’m withholding judgment on our secondary until Week 1. Look for a pickup when final roster cuts come down.
i hope. If we can add a quality #2 id feel much more confident. I like our depth we just are lacking near the top. I love Captain but i love him at nickel.
"I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them." - George Bush
"I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant." - Robert McCloskey
Given how well Ron Meeks knows our secondary...
I would think he would have told Hurney he needs more talent. I’m thinking they like what they got
i dont know. i think thats what we were originally hoping but
reports are not optimistic, “not as close as they’d hoped”. being a rookie makes it harder on him to join in midstream. but its possible.
That's a very good point, Jaxon
If anybody on this team knows our secondary, it’s Meeks. If he felt that there was a serious gap in what we need vs. what we have, then I’m sure he would have raised the red flag.
However, I think it should also be said that there may be some bias from Meeks concerning the talent he helped assemble when he held the DC position. He may, in fact, be looking through rose-colored glasses when it comes to “his” guys.
In situations like this when things are bad, the easy thing to do is fold up the tent, just pack it up and accept it. We were 11th in pass D in the legue last year, with zero pressure up the middle and Marshall at corner
Would be nice to have a more solid nickel as Munn moves up, but I’m not too worried.
With all due respect, ppalm...
We were 11th in pass D partly because teams could just run the ball. They didn’t have to pass to move the football.
I’m with you though, I don’t think we are that bad off in the secondary. I think people are selling Cap’n waaaaay short (pun clearly intended).

Harstock FB
I heard that discussed last night and I’m intrigued. I would like to see Fiametta step up. I thought he was ineffective last year but I’m willing to give a pass on last year. I’ll liken it to the entire season of Dallas that was just a dream and never really happened. Last year was a nightmare.
Oh, and 2nd team punter & kicker? Um, okay.
I think Hartsock will be the 2nd FB on the depth chart...
But will be used as a FB on 3rd and short situations when the defense knows we’re going to run.
It’s just a smart use of the rule “Don’t use two people for two things if one person can do both effectively”.

We don't need to keep a 2nd, dedicated, FB on the roster...
…we have 4 TE’s under contract and they can back up the position.
He is kind of tall for a FB
But if he’s a better lead blocker then I feel the same way, LP.

and too slow
i think there’s a reason why teams dont put 270 lb guys at FB very often. if they are slow they will be in the tailback’s way, IMO. hartsox will be used at FB in short yardage and goal line
Or as the 3rd TE. But I’d like them to actually make Bernie or Ziemba the 3rd TE (but put him next to the tackle) in the goal-line set
That way you could put Hartsock in the backfield, as you said.
"I don't know whatchu came to do...but IIIIIIIIIIIIII came to praise his name, yeyuss!!
~Reverend Brown, Coming to America
Also... and who knows...
Hartsock might be hiding some pass catching potential behind that “I will crush you” facade of his. You don’t get to be a TE at that size if you can’t catch the odd football.
I think we are going to see a lot of bootlegs near the end zone where Olsen, Shockey, and Hartsock all are on the field. Cam gets to roll out of the pocket and threaten to run it in, you gotta think on of the 3 of them will be open. Hartsock will be expected to make that catch.

Auburn did that a lot with Cam...to validate your point (not that it needed validation).

You're exactly right... Philip Lutzenkirken
His stats for 2010:
15 recs, 185yds, 5 TDs
Sounds to be like he was the big bruiser who got to catch the odd surprise pass. His 12.3 ypc is a testament to that.
Hartsock will be the same way. Defenses will forget about him until he catches one in the end zone.

Lawrence Wilson
Being a fairly low pick, I don’t see him being a lock until we hear something about him. Who will be his stiffest competition to beat him out?
OLB Jason Williams Would have Backedup Davis, But He's likely Going On the PUP List
Williams is a very good WLB (6-1, 246, 4.44-40), but he’s still recovering from his December torn ACL.
Harris is more a SLB guy, if I recall
We picked up some Eagles OLB and also have the versatile big man Connor on the roster
I was upset when I read about Jason Williams still not being ready to go...
I really, really liked him. He would have been good TD insurance.

Like I said on the show last night...
I love switching Sherrod Martin and Charles Godfrey. I think both of them are better suited for it.
From the safety position review on 6/2:
“The answer is staring the organization in the face, and I hope it’s a move Coach McDermott makes… swap the two players. Sure, Sherrod Martin is a smaller player, but he plays far bigger on running downs that Godfrey. Conversely, Godfrey does have a knack for being opportunistic in the passing game, so why not move him to FS where he can use those skills more readily?”
So they did swap Godfrey and Martin's positions?
I guess I’m not as familiar with that position as the rest.
Last year Godfrey played SS and Martin played FS and they have now switched?
That appears to be what happened, yes.

Oh wow. I didn't know that they were going to do that.

exactly my point, kind sir. :-)
Unless Meeks, Rivera, and McDermott come up with a brand new scheme, I don’t see us playing the standard Tampa 2. If you have the right players, it can be a beast of a system…but I don’t see us having the proper pieces. I expect a chaotic blitz system that will bring LB’s and DB’s straight to the QB on passing downs…and LB/Safety run blitzes a lot as well.
Does it really matter what we call Godfrey or Martin? I don’t think so. I think they are both adequate in pass coverage (different strengths…one ball hawking and one the better tackler), but if we’re getting the most out of confusing an offense, we’ll blitz them each equally and won’t label ’em so we keep it unexpected.
I don't know, honestly.
It depends on the system. But typically with a blitzing system like ours, your SS will more often blitz (because he’s a better tackler) and your FS will more often drop back (because he’s better in coverage). But that is just me commenting on a hypothetical, generic blitzing defense. I have no idea how we are going to do it, other than watching some Philly and some Chargers games last year.
From those observations, it looks like BAMF’s safetys were more interchangeable (Weddle and Gregory).

I hope this kid gets some PT. I don’t know if it’s been mentioned or not, but he went to Myers Park High School and had some good years in Philly. I love seeing some home grown talent doing well in the bigs. Especially when it’s someone i got to see play in high school.

WHY IS THIS GUY STILL AROUND!?
I pray that he’s gone before the regular season starts, because I don’t feel so good about our depth at DT if he’s the best 3rd or 4th guy they can find. We’ve all seen what happens when Hayden is on the field.
A credible source has told me Hayden uses Heelys for cleats that’s why he gets man handled at the line. Here is a photo of the source:
Well, honestly they would probably do some shuffling again.

schwartzy is otah's backup
so the bench guy would come in at RG. roll tape from last year, u know the drill
The downside of having a lot of big money starters at a position
Is you usually have to either sacrifice solid depth or sacrifice another position. I think that’s where we are on the OL, having over $20m/yr tied up in three players.
UDFA OT/OG Byron Bell Could Be In The ROT Mix As Well
OT/OG Byron Bell (6-5, 339, 5.40) could also be in the mix at ROT and ROG.
Good point.
Dude is enorgantic.

Gettis has size....
"What up? We're three cool guys looking for other cool guys who wanna hang out in our party mansion. Nothing sexual. Dudes in good shape encouraged. If you're fat, you should be able to find humor in the little things." Again, NOTHING SEXUAL

I think Gettis is slighty better at running routes.
But Lafell is better at the YAC.

I'll admit, I'm talking out of my ass right now (don't smell my breath)
…but I thought the knock on Gettis was his route running and hands. LaFell, was supposed to be the more polished receiver with blocking skills, but without blazing speed.
Then again, what players are supposed to be doesn’t factor into what they are once they get here. :-)
From what I saw last season...
Gettis is actually better at running some of the short/intermediate routes. But he never really broke any tackles.
