WR Trent Guy Cut, QB Tony Pike Has Elbow Surgery, & Clausen Injured

In the latest news fro RotoWorld, the Panthers have cut WR/KR Trent Guy for the 2nd year in a row. Also cut was P Anthony Santella, and big 300+ pound DT's Tommie Duhart and Louis Ellis.

Panthers 2nd year QB Tony Pike had elbow surgery today. This probably means that Pike will either be placed on IR, or cut with an injury settlement. Before this I had only heard that Pike had a shoulder or rotator cuff problem, so is elbow a new injury, or just a reassment of the old injury? Either way, those type surgery are bad news for a QB trying to win a job in the NFL.

QB Jimmy Clausen missed practice today with a knee injury, it's just my guess, but i bet it's the result of the hit he took against the Bengals. No word on how long Clausen will be out, but Cam Newton has been named the starter for the 4th preseason game.

Sorry to see Guy go

Hope the keep him on the PS, but I kinda doubt it. Anyone looking for a slot receiver who can contribute on ST though is gonna get a great player.

So if Jimmy can’t make it back in time, who’s excited to see DA play against Pittsburgh at BOA?

THANK YOU

A former starter, albeit a cruddy one, should look good against 3rd stringers. And he didn’t even look that good. He nearly threw a couple INT’s but the defense bailed him out.

Anyone else thought he looked like poopy?

His TD came off of a swing pass and he could have very easily had 2-3 INTs in very few attempts. Oh, and like BW said, this was against the Giants C squad.

Posted the same thing on Pike, other news is not a shocker.

T. Guy is a one trick pony and offers nothing as a receiver which is why he was cut, still hate to see a local Charlotte guy get cut that always sucks still any possiblity he is brought back for the PS squad again this year ? Pike may be done in Carolina after this year, and Clausen getting hurt just means that Newton is the starter and Anderson could be bumped up to the backup spot which is what needs to happen anyway, heck I wouldn’t mind Anderson starting the first couple of game as to not rush and hurt Newton’s development but if Newton is healthy he is the starting QB week one.

Also we signed Chris Massey Long snapper formerly of the Rams. I have yet to figure out why though at 6’ 245lbs and at the age of 32 their is nothing this guy can offer except more experience. I just hope Jansen is healthy and not injuried as well.

Ellis and Durhart both sucked and never saw the field much anyway good bye and wish you would have taken N. Hayden and A. Nebleet with you!

T.Guy

For you to say T. Guy is a one trick pony goes to show you know nothing about him . A lot of you get on here and make assumptions off one or two games you’ve seen and really don’t know the player . Trents cut was about money and politics . Steve Smith even praised his receiver skills .

by Jago1 on Sep 1, 2011 8:03 AM EDT up reply actions

So that means

R. Jackson our are we now in the market for a damn FB to Jesus Christ typical Panther preseason injuries everywhere and nobody worth a damn behind the said injuried player.

Jackson was a highly rated player so if we have to role the dice with him for a few games we can but we may need to find an upgrade if even for just a few games, no wonder we cannot run the ball with out Schwartz and OTAH and no possibly without our starting FB my goodness.

Otah is close to returning this Thursday against the Steelers but Schwartz is no where close rumor is if Hangartner becomes available Panthers are going to bring him back into the fold asap. Stay tuned for Tuesday cut down, Hangartner is rumored to be cut by the Bills .

Local guy missed

The guy who paved the way for the leading rusher last year and who year in, year out is known as one of the best FBs, was available and apparently, we showed no interest. That was puzzling to me. Vonta Leach from Robeson county will now pave the way in Baltimore. He’s a beast and our guy can’t get on the field. Go figure.

I don't think the Chudz plan uses the FB all that much, so paying free agent money for the best in the league

wouldn’t have been prudent at this juncture. Fi will be ready to come back (expected back for 1st ‘real’ game).

So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.

Is a FB other than Alstott really paid that much?

I just don’t seeing them getting more than 2 mil a year IF they are the best in the league.

On another note...

I was watching the Buffalo game and the Bills starting QB for the past several years Ryan Fitzpatrick who has a cannon and accuracy of a arm, went to Harvard…Harvard!!..really, I mean really That is a hell of a scouting team that I wish we could have.. There misses Donte Whitner not so much, but stevie johnson, roscoe parish, and even camp invites a Fred Jackson payed of dividends for the Bills..they just can’t keep there talent

Sad news about Trent Guy. =(

Is he still eligible for the practice squad? I’m horrible about keeping up with those kinds of rules.

It’s also rather unfortunate for Pike that he’s had so many injuries. I really would not be surprised to see him cut and for the team to just roll with Newton, Clausen, and Anderson. Best of wishes to Pike!

more than likely the early cut was

for guy’s benefit, to get to another camp and try to earn a spot on another team or PS. if you want to keep a guy you don’t make him cut #1 imo

To the 35

He returned 4 kicks and only one wasn’t beyond the 20 . And since they moved the kick off to the 35 yard line 98% of the kicks are gonna be to the endzone , so are the returners suppose to down every ball ? Know What you’re talking about before you post .

Newton has looked horrible. As bad as this sounds I kind of want to start Derek Anderson. Newton clearly needs to watch whats going on. He doesn’t seem to have a clue. We need to figure something out at the QB situation

I can almost guantee Pike wouldn't've made the roster anyways

Without the emergency third QB rule anymore, some teams are carrying only two QB’s. It would be madness to carry four. Hope we stash him on the PS though. And too bad for Trent Guy. Local dude with some potential, here’s to hoping he catches on somewhere else.

off topic...

Does anyone know the role Thomas Williams will play in the lineup? (ex. 2nd string, 3rd string?)… Just curious because dude is a great player that should be at least 2nd string.

by willhmx04 on Aug 28, 2011 6:45 PM EDT reply actions

I'm Not Sure Any More, He Had No Stats In Game 3

Thomas Williams looked good in the first 2 games, but he’s no better than the panthers 7th LB on the depth chart. He’s behind starters Davis, Anderson, and Beason, along with at least 3 backups, MLB Dan Connor, OLB/MLB Omar Gaither, and OLB/ST Jordan Senn. Thomas Williams might have and edge over 6th round pick OLB Lawrence Wilson, and the more talented (but still getting over his torn ACL last season). However, the Panthers could decide to count Eric Norwood as the 7th LB, or carry 10 DB’s rather than 9. Some Bad news may help Thomas Williams make the roster or the Panthers may find someone better among the roster cuts. MLB Jon Beason is now reported by RotoWorld to have also had 3 screws inserted in his heal during his recent surgery.

Hmmm, another QB.

I say we trade with KC for Stanzi. Sure, another rookie, but he has looked great so far in preseason. Accurate, hard throws. No INTs and KC’s only touchdowns in the preseason. I think we screwed up on Cam.

by Iowalina Fan on Aug 28, 2011 7:46 PM EDT reply actions

Really?

These are just book stats. But I have watched all KC and Carolina games, and I must tell you, Stanzi looks way better that Newton. Newton’s throws are all over the place. He throws off his back foot way too often and he looks like he’s got Parkinson’s disease. Stanzi’s throws hit the target way more often, the only reason he has such a high in-completion rate is he is playing with crappy receivers that can’t hang onto the ball. Of the 10-12 in-completions last weeks only a couple were off the mark, the rest were drops by the receivers. Can’t say that for Newton. Just look at the numbers below for the first 3 weeks.

Seriously? Also Stanzi has had a pick, Newton hasnt. Using your logic, obviously Stanzi makes bad decisions because he has one pick……

Trent Guy is a trooper and he’s a better punt and kick return man than any Panther they kept . Like I said before politics is the reason he’s not there , somebody’s a$$ is on the line if a certain drafted player doesn’t perform .
