DT/3-4 DE Kentwan Balmer Cut By Seahawks, Should Panthers Check Him Out?

DT/3-4 DE Kentwan Balmer (6-5, 315, only 24 years old, from Ahoskie NC), of UNC was the 49ers #29 pick in the 2008 draft (shooting up draft boards late, and into the 1st round), and was traded to the Seahawks last August. He did very little in his 2 seasons with the 49ers, with only 19 tackles, in 27 games, with no starts. With the Seahawks in 2010 Balmer started 11 of his 16 games (replacing 3-4 DE Red Bryant), with 43 tackles, and 1 pass defended.

Balmer has really been force to play out of position so far with the 49ers and Seahawks, lacking the speed (5,28-40) for even a 3-4 DE,  his best position is at DT. RotoWorld said this about him when reporting he was cut, "Has struggled mightily as a run defender and provided nothing as a pass rusher". That may partly be because he lacks the speed to get outside against the run as DE. His 2011 salary is $622,000 and $700,000 in 2012.

Perhaps the Panthers should claim him off waivers, see what he's got, and if he doesn't measure up cut him at the final cuts. What do you think.
