Last week the biggest news for the Panthers came almost immediately before the Dolphins' pre-season game. Pro Bowl center Ryan Kalil signed a 5 year extension. This will keep Kalil in Carolina through at least 2016, and if you've been following the Panthers for any time you'll now how important that is; the center spot has been an up and down position for much of the franchises's history. One where the talent was always pretty good, but never elite, now the Panthers have their elite C locked up.
While the signing of Kalil is of vast importance it does have a secondary function: freeing up money. As Pat Yasinskas of ESPN points out the front office saved $5.5 million in 2011 by restructuring Kalil's deal and getting him off the franchise tag. While we knew the Panthers would be saving money, we weren't quite sure how much the Panthers would save. According to Yasinskas the Panthers are now $8 million under the salary cap for 2011, a truly amazing feat given that there are really no other long term concerns needing to be resigned.
So Panthers fans... what do you think we should spend the money on?
