Yesterday, "doncarolina" posted a very interesting suggestion that the Panthers should trade QB Jimmy Clausen to the Colts for WR Anthony Gonzalez, and I feel it needs to be discussed, along with a fan poll.
The reasons he suggested Clausen to the Colts are that Notre Dame is in Indania (so he might have some support), the Colts need a long-term backup QB /possible successor for Payton Manning (he's now in his late 30's), and that Panthers / Cam fans will never give Clausen a chance.
Payton Manning is getting older (now in his late 30's), and he recently had his 2nd neck surgery, which has kept him out the whole perseason, and could miss the start of the regular season as well. With the neck injuries, it could be a question of 1 bad hit and he's finished. Both the Colts backup QB's (Painter and Orlovsky) have struggled greatly this preseason, to be generous, and neither is more than temporary stop gap that they hope never to need. So the Colts have a need to fill.
If the fans booing in the 1st preseason game was bad, just wait until Clausen has to replace Cam in a regular season home game. Newton will be the Panthers starting QB long-term, no matter what Clausen does, so let him have it. It's may not be fair, but Clausen has almost no chance of success with the Panther, he needs a fresh start with another team. The Panthers need Clausen as a backup, or someone like him, if anyone watched Anderson last season they know he's not the answer either, but you do what you have to do. The Panthers don't have to worry about a split locker room yet, because Cam is so popular, but if Cam keeps missing WR's in preseason it could start later, and the Panthers need to move Clausen before it becomes a problem. Clausen is very tradeable, with only the minimum salary each of the next 3 seasons, starting with $405,000 this year. Maybe the Colts will trade a 3rd or 4th round pick for Clausen, along with a body to help keep them under the salary cap.
What do you think?
