Clayton's Free Agency Winners & Losers
John Clayton with ESPN is one of the few that recognized that though the Panthers focused on their own free agents they are still one of his free agency winners:
Carolina Panthers
Linebackers James Anderson and Thomas Davis, defensive end Charles Johnson and running back DeAngelo Williams all decided to stay in Carolina, and the Panthers also gave linebacker Jon Beason a five-year contract extension. Somehow, they also found a way to trade for tight end Greg Olsen and sign kicker Olindo Mare, defensive tackle Ron Edwards and safety Sean Considine.
He's not even counting Kenny "Bring the' Payne at SS...lol. Seriously the Olsen trade has to be what got us over the top. Plus I like the fact that though the Panthers had the inside track on their own players they still did what it took to keep them from looking around seriously.
Of course Clayon liked the Eagles moves the best and then the Cardinals once they landed Kevin Kolb. Though I think the Cards took on too many cast offs like Richard Marshall and Jeff King. He also gave props to the Jags.
We will look at Clayton's losers ...after the jump...
Hat tip to Johnnymac080 for being the first to post this on CSR via fanshot.
For all their cap space the Bucs did zilch; well they signed a punter. Ha Ha Ha!!!
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Bucs opened free agency with $52 million of room, but all they have done is re-sign offensive linemen Davin Joseph and Jeremy Trueblood. Their only free-agent addition is punter Michael Koenen.
They're going to need him! The 49ers are taking some flack too:
San Francisco 49ers
The team went backward in the first six days. They needed to re-sign offensive lineman David Baas to replace Eric Heitmann at center, but they lost Baas to the Giants. Linebacker Takeo Spikes left for the Chargers. They cut cornerback Nate Clements and failed to talk him into re-signing.
I'm surprised the Saints didn't make the 'loser' list given they did very little and lost Reggie Bush.

Bucs??
Yea,dont know whats up with them. Unless they plan on renogotiating with all their young players and locking them up long term. Weird. On the Saints, I have a feeling they may finish last in the NFC South this year. Just a hunch. There are still a lot of free agents out there tk be had, and lots of moves still to be made. The patient GM’s may get some good value.

I am also puzzled by the Bucs. Why not make a play for Nicks? How do they get away
with being this far under the floor? IIRC, if they don’t at least reach the floor, they have to pay the difference to the players anyway. With just a couple of signings, they could have done real damage to the Falcons and Saints. I don’t get it.
San Fran smells fishy; as in, fishing for Luck. They’ll have some competition from Washington and Miami, among others.
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
The Bucs would have to surrender
a 1st and 3rd rounder to get Carl N. They like to build thru the draft and I thought salary cap floor doesn’t count until 2013.
Salary cap floor does apply this year. The percentages change in 2013.
Believe the floor is around 110K IIRC.
"I may be old but...eh, I forget the rest!"
Scrap the above. John Clayton just said on ESPN that this clause was pulled in the last CBA mtg.
"I may be old but...eh, I forget the rest!"
Look for the Bucs to snatch up talent during cuts and cap fixing
There’s still a lot out there that will probably hit the wire at some point or another. The problem, as I see it, was what the bucs needed. This FA was strong at their positions of strength, IMO.
Exactly
We pick up other team’s expendable resources. Also Panthers and Bucs are only teams with 1st round picks next year in our division.

If Cam, AE and Olsen all have a good year
Then I will forgive Hurney for anything I’ve ever blames him for, and declare him
one of the NFL’s best GM’s.

i wouldnt hate trading away first round picks if he was a really bad gm and was hit or miss on first round picks. But we always get a very solid player with our first rounders so I hate trading away future first round picks bc of that
Amen to that Jaxon.
I would have blown up Charlotte if we’d have given away #1 overall.

What I really love...
Is that he doesn’t even bother to name Umenyiora. He’s just “the DE from the Giants.” =)

I agree with Clayton's assessment
I do wish we would still sign a CB to replace (upgrade) Marshall’s loss. I know Cap’n Munny is up to the task, but I wouldn’t necessarily call him full time starting caliber CB in the NFL. I hope we’re still in the mix to bring Carlos Rogers in.

Pro football focus also sees the Panthers among the Winners...
Link to the article
PFF has the Panthers listed 3rd among their five winning teams in FA, joining Philly, Houston, St. Louis, and Washington.
Carolina Panthers
It was the attitude the Panthers took that was so refreshing. After years of watching them do nothing in free agency they were about as aggressive as it gets. It may seem like they overpaid for Charles Johnson, but, considering his age and production, there’s a case to be made that he was the top free agent available. They followed that by locking down James Anderson and Thomas Davis before trading for a talented receiving tight end in Greg Olsen. They even picked up valuable players like Olindo Mare and Ben Hartsock who can play important roles for a successful team. They overpaid for DeAngelo Williams, but the Panthers could have been in bad shape with so many possible free agents. Instead, they may not be all that far from contending again.
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
I might have to agree with them in regards to overpaying D-Will
I was and still am a strong proponent for keeping him in the Balck and Blue until he retires, but $43 Mil for a RB was pretty steep. I thnk they could’ve made the same deal for around $30 Mil. Maybe I’m wrong. I know there was some interest from other teams, but I don’t think there was $40 Mil interest.
Still, I’m very happy that he decided to stay with the Panthers.

he had lots of offers, but decided to take less money and stay in Charlotte (paraphrasing).

I heard the D-Will interview.
He said that a couple other teams (and might have said Miami by name) offered him “nice deals.”
But he said that he didn’t want to leave Charlotte.

I am so glad DeAngelo is staying...
…that I finally sprang for that electric blue #34 jersey I’ve been coveting! w00t!
What we do is what we do.
Olson for a 3rd rounder
Still can’t get over this one. It’s like we had a gun to their head and told them that we’re making this deal or else.
Has to be the biggest steal of the offseason.
Not quite...
I’m sure the conversation went like this:
The Big Cat to Jerry A:
Say Jerry, remember when you were telling me about your freshmen year in high school? And how you went to band camp? And met that camp counselor who made you his ‘little buddy?’ Yeah, so how about trading Olsen to us? We’ll give a 3rd round just to keep up appearances.
Yeah, pretty sure that’s how it went down.

Yeah for real
My 15 year old nephew is a Bears fan (I mention his age to show imaturity may be to blame for his bad taste lol). He was pissed when I told him we got Olsen. He is the starting TE at his highschool and I think he really looks up to Olsen and try to play like him.
IT AIN'T SIZE OF THE DOG IN THE FIGHT BUT THE SIZE OF THE FIGHT IN THE DOG
The Olsen trade is a steal, but..
i dont think its the biggest steal during the offseason. Dont get me wrong i love the Olsen trade, but I would consider the Ochocinco trade to Pats a bigger steal, not to mention the Pats got Haynesworth too. The Pats basically gave nothing away for two pro-bowlers. I got a feeling the Pats will represent the AFC in the superbowl.
by chang_gang84 on Aug 2, 2011 3:28 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Technically a "steal" is what Philly did
Trade what was garbage to them (Kolb) for a 2nd and premier CB… Then immediately turn around and sign VY, who they probably consider an upgrade over Kolb. Now they have another expendable premier CB (Samuel), who they still might trade for another high pick. That’s some pretty ruthless dealing!

You're judging players based more on name value than substance.
Olsen is a young, 1st round draft pick, pass catching TE. He should be a valuable asset in Carolina for years to come and we got him for a fraction of his true value.
Haynesworth is a guy that cares more about himself than he does about his team, or the game of football. He’s going to a team that runs the same defense that he’s said he doesn’t want to play in. He wouldn’t play for Washington for $100,000,000.00. That’s a lot of 0’s so I’ll translate, one hundred million dollars. He laid on the ground, watching a good game of football take place around him, while getting paid one hundred million dollars.
If that kind of money won’t motivate a guy then nothing is going to do it.
Chad is Chad. He’s not the receiver he used to be. Hell, T.O had better chemistry with Carson Palmer last year than Ochocinco did and Chad’s been with him for years. Time will tell I guess.
As for your Super Bowl prediction, you could be right. I just don’t think Ochocinco and Haynesworth will be the reason.

I dont know if they are switching to a 4-3 exclusively but
i heard that NE ran a 4-3 subpackage about 43% (im going off memory so that number might be off a little) of the time last year…
They've mostly run a hybrid 3-4/4-3 in the past.
OldhamA’s right, their personnel moves suggest they might be leaning towards more 4-3 but with the Patriots, you never know. They’re going to run what works.

I agree with the Pats trades being solid
but they aren’t as long term as the Olson trade. We picked up a franchise TE, which could develop into top 5 in his position.
Pats picked up an old, fat guy with a history of slacking, who may retire soon. Then there’s 85, who is also a maniac in his own right, is a year older than our own Steve Smith, and cost 2 draft picks.
Ochocinco may be a maniac
but he is entertaining. I love watching him on the field because you never know what he’s gonna do next.
IT AIN'T SIZE OF THE DOG IN THE FIGHT BUT THE SIZE OF THE FIGHT IN THE DOG
I agree man lol
I will miss Ocho once he retires
call me optimistic, but i think the falcons are
1 michael turner injury/hitting of the wall (330 carries a year, turns 30 in Feb) from becoming extremely 1 dimensional. do they have a backup RB??
AdamSchefter Adam Schefter · Follow
Another RB is off the market: Rams reached agreement with former Falcons running back Jerious Norwood on a one-year deal.
I believe they drafted one.
Jacquiz Rodgers I think. Don’t remember much about him. Isn’t Snelling still with them too?
"Keep Pounding" -Sam Mills

Snelling's a UFA, but I don't think anybody's picked him up yet. Somebody should, though.
He’s an excellent runner and 3rd down option. Rodgers is a rookie scat back that they’re pretty high on. Overall, I’d say the RB situation in Atlanta is an issue at this point, and more so if they lose Snelling.
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.

You will lose in this division if you can't defend the power run
Stewart, Turner, Blount, and now Ingram. Every single team has a strong back (although the Saints run blocking sucks).
Signing our own big guys=HUGE
These are BAMF that started here and should kick ass for Carolina—not the Pats or Falcons. Plus I think it sends a message to the rest of the league that good performance gets rewarded here. Free Agents are gonna know that!
