Panthers TE Barnidge Ankle is Broken
Head Coach Ron Rivera just announced that TE Gary Barnidge, who has been having a promising preseason, has broken his ankle. It was not said whether or not surgery will be performed. Rivera did say there is no ligament damage, which is a good thing for a quicker return for the only TE we kept from the 2010 campaign. Since we have stocked up on TEs in FA, this isnt a catastrophic loss, but it is very disappointing since Barnidge may be groomed to step in if we dont bring Shockey back next year after his contract expires.

This could be a blessing in disguise.
May make it easier to hide him away until next year, if that is what the coaching staff has in mind.

i have loved Barnidge's play, and I kinda agree...
but he needs to be studying his ass off, getting every route and protection right. he has potential to be something really, really special to this team, especially with Olsen on the field at the same time.

Barnidge Will Be A URFA In 2012
Barnidge will be a URFA (Unrestricted Free Agent) next year, so it could mean he might be cut, with an injury settlement. If so he could still play this season, after he heals he could then sign with any team, but if he goes on IR he’s out for the Panhes whole season, and could could only return to another tem this season if he’s cut while on the IR list.
Interesting situation since Shockey will also be a URFA and Hartsock really isnt a catching TE

Not sure how the new CBA is written.
Could be if he is unable to play this year due to injury that another year is added to his rookie contract. I know another year was added to Thomas Davis’s contract after his injury last year. That is why he was renegotiating his contract this year instead of being a free agent.

Good point
Dont know either, I dont think that rule was changed though. Fairly obscure rule but could help us if it is still in place.

Not good news.
Most likely, we will be taking the field with Olsen and Hartsock by week 8. Not a bad duo, but likely to telegraph play calling. I pray now, more than ever, that Shockey can stay healthy.
