Kasay's impassioned letter to fans characterizes Panthers organization
A few weeks ago during CSR Radio I went on a small rant towards the end of the show about what this organization means to the fans and players. We should be thankful that Jerry Richardson has built an organization that is more family than buisness; not all teams can boast that their players are emotionally invested in their teams, both for the good and the bad. Over the years we've seen myriad occasions where players break down in tears, or lash out in anger when they leave this team, because strong bonds were built.
The original Panther John Kasay wrote an emotional letter to every member of CSR, to every PSL holder, to every fan who has ever watched him play and cheered him on and simply asked the Charlotte Observer to share his letter with the fans. In doing so he not only cemented himself as one of the greatest players to ever wear the Panthers uniform, but also as one of the classiest players in NFL history.
Dear Panthers Fans,
I wanted to personally write this letter to every Carolina Panther fan. Words cannot express how truly thankful my family and I are for the most wonderful 16 years of our lives.
We came to the Panthers as a young family with a 3-month-old baby. We leave with 4 children, 2 of whom are in high school. In between, you have loved and cheered and blessed us way more than we ever deserved.
It's easy to forget just how many life events a person goes through in 16 years, far more than staring at a long list of NFL season stats can ever tell you. As much as Kasay was our kicker it was Charlotte that became his home.
More of Kasay's letter after the jump
It is my hope that the greatest years in Panthers history are still to come. A franchise decorated with numerous Lombardi Trophies. Dozens of Hall-of-Fame players. And a region that swells with pride whenever they speak of their beloved Panthers.
Straight from John's lips to the football-god's ears on this one. It just shows the kind of man Kasay is to see past the tough business decision that resulted in his departure and still wish well for an organization, and fan base that has been at his side.
I pray that this will be a wonderful season and we will all get to watch the Panthers return to their rightful place as one of most feared teams in the NFL.
May God bless you. Thank you for the memories.
Blessings, John Kasay
God bless you and your family too John, than you for all the memories. I'm not sure what Canton holds, but regardless you're in our hall of fame and we hope your statue will soon adorn the grounds outside BoA Stadium.

Great Idea !!!
But rather than Jerry doing it why don’t we fans setup a building fund for the statute. Couldn’t PSR be the base for such a fund?
I think John would really enjoy and cherish such an outflow from the fans.

This won't work...
…because I don’t think the ever-humble John Kasay would accept such a statue. He’s a deeply religious man. He doesn’t believe in casting idols in stone or metal. That goes double for himself. Honestly, even if the Panthers offered such a thing to him, I sincerely doubt he’d approve of it…or take part in it. It’s just not John’s style.
I see your point...
…and I agree he’d probably request that it not happen. But I think it would make him cry (in the beautiful way) should it happen. Who wouldn’t? It’s a tribute to his ability, his dedication, and his spirit.
The man is a class act, a stalwart, one of the best kickers EVER, and the original Panther. He carries the cross (apologies for this metaphor, especially since I’m not religious) Sam Mills had to lay down when cancer overtook him; and no person could have shouldered the burden better than #4.
I seriously hope Kasay knows how much Panthers fans love him…he’s the consummate kicker, player, silent leader, and man…and we were blessed to have had him as a Panther for so long. Most fans of other teams will never understand what it means to have that presence.
Kasay, you deserve every accolade that may ever come your way….and you will always be remembered by the Panther fans who grew up with you. You will always be an inspiration to us.
This is from the Charlotte Observer...
But for those who don’t go to the CO’s website, here’s a visual of the handwritten letter.

I will be incredibly disappointed if the organization doesn’t retire the #4 jersey. Those cleats are too big for anyone else to fill. (And please, no one turn that into a TWSS moment – not what I’m going for.)

TWSS is REALLY old and hackneyed now, IMO (thanks for nipping it in the bud, Jamie)...
…but this is a beautiful tribute to Panther fans who mostly believe he deserves a beautiful tribute, as well.
I’m not Christian…but I AM profoundly respectful of people who deserve it…and #4 deserves it. He’s a class act by ANY definition of the term. As much as you thank us, we hank YOU for the memories, Mr. Kasay. You’ve blessed us by your presence…I hope we can somehow find a way to bless you in return.
One of the Few True Greats
So many times you have a great player with a bad attitude, or a bad player with a great attitude and many in between. But it isn’t often when you have the pleasure to cheer on that special player with a great attitude and wonderful skills. John may not be remembered as the greatest panther of all time but is is definately at the top of the order. He has been one of my favorite players for a long time and while he may be replaced on the field he will never be replaced in the hearts of the panther faithful.
IT AIN'T SIZE OF THE DOG IN THE FIGHT BUT THE SIZE OF THE FIGHT IN THE DOG
Do you mean number?
Retiring his jersey is good thing. But retiring the number, to commemorate the last original Panther, along with the fact that no one else can wear it would be in my mind, the right step. But his name on the Ring of Honor, build him a statue, and retire his number. Kasay meant more to the Carolina’s than for us to allow someone else to wear his number

True class act...
to play that long in the NFL and only play for 2 teams says a lot about his skills as a kicker. I’m so proud to have had the privilege of watching him for the last 16 years.
On another note…didn’t anyone realize we’re playing the Ravens on Thursday night? Or am I missing something? Why is someone who covers the Bears reporting (wrongly) on the Panthers?

Kasay will be missed. And it won’t just be his on field presence, but his calming off field influence as well. One can say the reason Smitty has calmed down so much over the years has been the influence of John Kasay. People on the outside and fans of the team that are just fair wheather fans will say “Oh he was just a kicker. Who cares?”.
He was more than a kicker. He was friend to his teammates, a positive locker room influence, and loved by all us Panthers fans who understand the things he has done for this organization. Kasay deserves to be immortalized for those reasons.

not sure where to post this today but finally some good news about gamble
Aug. 09, 2011 2:28 p.m. – by Steve Reed – Gamble to get top WR
CB Chris Gamble said he’s been told by coaches he’ll be covering the opponent’s No. 1 WR, rather than having to stick to one side of the field as in the past. Gamble, who was benched late last season, said he’s confident he can be a shutdown CB. Panthers RapidReports
for some maybe this was obvious, but the lack of practice time had some of us getting worried about where chris’ head was at

i think he gets every oppty to make the team
by bustin his butt for the next 4 weeks and making plays. RR is really stressing that guys are not given spots on this team, they earn it. so if the other 6 WRs outwork him and outplay him, it’s possible he gets traded/cut, IMO

Probably not, but he's definitely on a VERY short leash
Naanee is impressing by busting his tail. Gettis is still toggling between #2-#3. Armanti is lining up all over the place. Olsen is lining up at WR. LaFell is the odd man out.

Reed said on WFNZ that Rivera's been pretty down on Everette Brown
He said Norwood is starting ahead of him, just based on effort. And that he needs a DE that can do more than just rush the passer… implying Brown cannot.
Looking like Hardy will be the starter, with Norwood getting a lot more snaps this year. And Brown once again limited to obvious passing downs only.
STEVE SMITH!
by southtunnel on Aug 10, 2011 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions
I think that's a pretty big assumption (re: Hardy)
There’s no telling what Rivera will think of Hardy’s attitude/work ethic either, but getting into a motorcycle accident before camp doesn’t exactly endear you to the new staff.
He’ll have to prove himself just as much anyone on the roster. I think Norwood is going to get the starting nod based on what they’re seeing from him and Hardy and Brown will battle for the 3D spot when CJ rotates to DT.
Steve Reed said he thought it would be Hardy
The assumption being that Brown’s size hurts him against the run. Hardy is a more natural NFL DE… And who’s left to start? Norwood? He’s small too… he’s just getting an A for effort. We are thin at the line. I think Hardy starting is a safe guess at this point.
STEVE SMITH!
I have the same perspective.
Unless we get a true NT for a 3-4, Norwood and Brown will always be back-ups or 3rd down specialists.
Norwood is 6-1 255.
That is not too small in this defense.
"I don't know whatchu came to do...but IIIIIIIIIIIIII came to praise his name, yeyuss!!
~Reverend Brown, Coming to America
I almost wonder if we need CJ to rotate to the DT position during obvious passing downs...
…we’ve seen Irving and McClain as penetrating DT’s in this defense. I think taking out the NT and putting those 2 in as the pass rushing UT’s, while leaving CJ and Hardy/Norwood or even Brown in as DE’s will still put PHENOMENAL pressure on the offense, while helping to limit draw plays.
Great updates revdwl. What happened to TD now? He injured again?

schwarty’s “sore” hip, TD’s “sore” foot, and Duke’s “sore everything” are nothing to be concerned about, just run of the mill camp stuff. with 5 weeks until real games, there is some margin to let the guys rest adequately to let the soreness subside so they can jump back in full strength, even if it means missing several practices in early august

My thoughts on the mechanics of the fund
1) Have James/Jaxon co-chair the fund drive
2) Setup a special bank account “John Kasay statue fund”
3) Rent a P.O. Box with that name
4) All checks, M.O.s, etc. should be made out to the fund.
5) Attempt to get “free” advertizing from local paper, radio stations, etc.
6 Any funds left over should be given to Johns favorite charity in his name

Personally, I’m quite worried about the NT position. Fua will prob take a bit to come into his own, and probably won’t command double teams consistently until his 2nd or 3rd year. Not having a guy who can eat up 2 blockers on the line will hurt our blitz-heavy defense a lot.
by the sound of corvey, he will take up at least THREE blockers lol

Setting goals and achieving them are two different things.
Personally, I’d be offended if any one of our beloved Panthers came into camp thinking anything different than they’re going to a Pro Bowl. I mean, I really wouldn’t expect him to say anything else. He’s yet another in a long list of our guys who have to prove themselves. But that means that they’re going to be pushing hard, they’re going to be hungry. I think they’ll be successful, but let’s reserve the idea of the Pro Bowl until we’ve actually seen them play at that level. I don’t want to get too far up, you know? Lol.

As long as they use them sparingly just to keep the defense on their toes. They don’t want to run an exclusively trick play offense like the wildcat was in miami a few years ago but if they have a situation where the defense is bering down on them and they need to change things up a bit then they have a lot of options to go with.

When you can't win with polish, win with trickery
As teams like the Browns have shown, thinking out of the box against teams you can’t beat on paper is a good recipe for upsets. Going into week 2, we can’t honestly expect to win against GB without a trick or two up our sleeve. Play to win, not to the status quo. I think a lot of NFL coaches could definitely take that lesson away from college Cinderella upsets.

If you swing him out as a WR, doesn’t that give the defense a free shot. When I was playing CB in HS, if the QB hsd lined up in front of me as a WR, I would have tried to take his head off when I had the chance without any blockers in my way. I would think if I was making that decision I would line him of at tailback or even take him off the field completely.
IT AIN'T SIZE OF THE DOG IN THE FIGHT BUT THE SIZE OF THE FIGHT IN THE DOG
In the NFL refs will be looking out for that sort of thing. Then after the game the commish
will hammer you with a ~150k fine. On top of that everyone on the opposing team will know precisely what you were up to and then you can expect permanent retribution for going after their leader.

But if he's a WR
you have five yards of free contact with him before it’s pass interference. You may piss off the other team but as far as penalties, that’s just football. If you don’t want him to get hit then don’t line him up out there.
IT AIN'T SIZE OF THE DOG IN THE FIGHT BUT THE SIZE OF THE FIGHT IN THE DOG
Back in the day it used to be "just football"
but nowadays things like that can be construed as detrimental and they fine or suspend folk for it. Not saying its right…but just how it is.

I think Jake lined up there once
and at the snap, promptly sprinted backwards away from the line. Not much of a chance of him getting clobbered.

Heh. I remember that. The goal is to make the defense account for you and get out of the way
but can you imagine having to face off against a 6’5" 250lb QB with ~4.6 40 that might be running a route on you with a guy known to have a cannon arm taking the snap (AE)?

There are also logistical considerations
The goal is confusion and pulling your QB off the field immediately lets the opposing defense know something is up as opposed to realizing it after the team breaks the huddle. Also shuffling personnel like that could be a good way to get an illegal substitution penalty unless you’ve already let the rest of the offense know that the formation is coming.

Very true
But I still think I would keep him in the backfield behind the line and somewhat out of danger.

One of my favorite games was against Atlanta.
We had a bunch of running plays where there was literally no QB on the field. I mean they KNEW we were running and couldn’t stop it. That said, it doesn’t always work like that.

I liked that game too
One that stuck out to me was 2009 against the Vikes. Best run D in the league, stacked the box, and we still bruised our way down the field. God I love our run game.
J-Stew was a monster towards the end of '09.
That Tampa game I’d say was the pinnacle. We ruined Jon Gruden’s NFL career.

Yeah.
I used to get sooo pissed at Fox/Davidson when they would waste downs throwing the football when it was clear our passing game was getting us nowhere. I realize you have to keep the defense honest (assuming you can’t just run them over no matter what), but man we had two studs back there and crap at QB yet we continued to try and force a square beg into a round hole.

Not the sole reason we lost that game, without him we would have never been there
to begin with. We won I believe 7 games that year in the last minute, many off of his foot. Not to mention the 50 yd field goal he hit as time expired before the half.
His poor kickoff made the Patriots job much easier, but the defense still gave up a number of 13 yard+ pass plays while playing soft which should have never happened.
One play can win a game, but one play does not necessarily lose one. We had plenty of chances.

This, a thousand times over
Fact is, we lost the superbowl because of the defense… not because of Kasay; he’s just become the convenient scapegoat.
During the 2003 season the defense allowed 295 yards a game. When it came time for the Superbowl they all forgot to play at the same time, except because everyone was blinded by the offensive show we forgot just how bad our defense was. They allowed 487 yards of total offense, almost 200 yards more than their season average.
So… in the end what made more of a difference? The half field Kasay gave up on the kickoff, or the two fields the defense gave up in the first 59 minutes?

Spygate was discovered a year later, but that doesn’t mean it had only been going on for a year.
Honestly, I think the whole thing has been completely overblown by fans.
I like a good conspiracy theory as much as the next person, but if they really had film on the Panthers then Jake Delhomme would have never passed for 300 yards on them
We had a quality defense that was torn to shreds.
I think the possibility of illegal filming is a valid theory. Jake Delhomme wasn’t exactly known as a lethal weapon before the Super Bowl either, it’s entirely possible Belichick overlooked him in favor of Stephen Davis and the running game, who also happened to struggle.

Yeah...it's not like we were blown out, either.
A lot of people I knew back then that were not fans of either team told me it was the greatest Super Bowl they had ever watched (including my boss, who was/is a HUGE Peyton Manning fan). If the Patriots really were cheating, why did they just cheat on one side of the ball, and allow Delhomme to have arguably the greatest game in his career?
In other news, Tom Brady was UNSTOPPABLE that year. I was thrilled that Jakers was hanging with him every step of the way.

Only response I have is... quit crying B/C i have another opinion than you guys!!
For one Football is a game of emotion, and momentum.. We had the momentum in the SB until our kicker kicks the ball outta bounds!!! PLAIN and SIMPLE!!! We lost right then and we had a different team go out [on d]than we would have before that happened! and they won off a long field goal… add the 15 extra yards on there it don’t go in!!
My point being… it may be an un popular opinion or a DICK opinion… but I DONT CARE!! we can point out any point of that game and say we lost…b/c of that…. and keep telling your self that!! in my opinion the turning point of that game was when he kicked the ball outta bounds!!! and thats my opinion! you can bash it all you want but I DONT CARE!!!

If you don't care why are you posting in caps and with exclamation points?
You are correct in saying momentum is huge in football, and that right there was a turning point back in the Patriots favor. But we had loads of opportunities before that to swing it in our favor and keep it there. All we needed was one good defensive play and the momentum would have been back on our side. You can’t ever lose a football game on one play, because there’s always another play that if you had done better on you wouldn’t have been in the situation to begin with.

Seriously dude? So all the games that we won off his foot in the waning seconds during that year don’t count? You realize we never would have even gone to the playoffs without him? Ridiculous to think that. And to solely blame him for that loss is asinine. With the way both offenses were producing, it is likely another 10-15 yards of space would not have mattered.

Hmm.
So apparently, don’t disagree with people here at CSR. Or they will call you a dick.
I mean, I understand that Kasay’s a good guy, and one hell of a kicker. Is it not okay for Cap to still be angry about Kasay kicking the ball out of bounds? I’m sure Kasay’s a great guy…or I guess he is, hell, I don’t really know him personally. But does that really have anything to do with how good of a football player he is? I’m not going to go so far as to say that he LOST the game, but I’m certainly still upset at what was, in all honesty, one of the biggest choke jobs I’ve ever seen in my life. Did he make some tough kicks that won games? Yes. Did he perform to the best of his ability in the vast majority of chances given? Yes. But in the biggest moment, in his most important moment, he choked. I don’t know how you can call it anything else.
My thing with Kasay is that…he’s a kicker. As in, not a real football player. As in, not a guy who’s putting his body on the line. So I feel like…. he was a great kicker, but so what? I have always felt like kickers are just unnecessary. Kasay was great for us, I’m glad to have had him. But in the end, to me, he’s just a kicker. Honestly? I would have rather had an asshole kicker, a la Vanderjagt, and a Super Bowl victory than a kicker who was a really nice guy. Let’s face it, it could be a very long time before we see the Super Bowl again.
I know this is Kasay’s post, but I’ll tell you what a real dick move is…calling someone out for posting how they feel on a blog intended for that very purpose.

I’m not trying to get into an argument here, but I cannot possibly believe that you said that. Can you kick a football 55 yards? 50? 45? 25? I bet you can’t. To say he isn’t a “real football player” is akin to saying “well you are in the Air Force, but you don’t wield a gun on the front lines so you are not a real solider in the military”.
Seriously dude, that is pretty bad. He is putting his body on the line, putting everything he has into every kick. Are they all 100% on target? No. But I’d like to see you go out there, kick FG’s all day, and tell me you are not hurting physically.
And please, if you ever see Kasay, please tell him how unnecessary he was here in Carolina. Not like we needed him for any of those last second FG’s or anything.
I don’t have a problem with peoples opinions, until they borderline on unnecessary insanity. I’m sorry Kack, but that is a pretty poor opinion.
Proud Member of Cat Scratch Reader and coiner of the (minus Bowers) meme
Insanity? I think a kicker is irrelevant, by and large, and that’s insane? Okay, I guess I’m insane..
If I ever saw Kasay, well, I wouldn’t say anything to him because I don’t know the guy personally.
And, uh, I can’t kick a football. Does that mean I have to respect the skills of all kickers? I can’t give a blowjob either. So should I go down to the corner and thank all those ladies down there for being so great at a skill that I have no aptitude in?
Can you guys be a bit more realistic? I’m sorry I don’t agree with you all. Can I disagree without pissing everyone off?

Like I said, I don’t want to get into an argument about this. Perhaps insane is a strong word to use, but I totally disagree with you assessment of both Kasay and the kicker position. Every position in football is relevant. They all have their purpose.
While Kasay has missed FG’s, he also made some pretty damned big ones. People love to pine about his botched SB kickoff. Well, everyone makes mistakes, even in big games. Does that mean that the entire career of that guy goes down the drain because of one play? No.
I also did not say anything about him not losing us any games. This is a team game, which makes the people who argue it was his fault we lost the SB irrelevant. Kasay has been an integral part of this team for 16 years. It is obvious that you don’t think very highly of the job he has done.
That is fine. But please, don’t disregard everything he has done for this team simply due to a prejudice against the position he plays.

"not a real football player"
They’ve had kickers in football since it began, so yeah they’re real players. Not to mention kicking in the NFL is one of the most competitive jobs in existence. Only the top 32 get a spot, and if you have a streak of bad luck, like Vanderjagt, you’re out of a job quick. Now add in that Kasay is probably one of the best to ever play the game at his position, and I’ve got no problem calling him a real football player.
