Panthers claim LB Kelvin Smith and CB Michael Greco off waivers
Two more players were added to the fold Sunday as the Carolina Panthers claimed Kelvin Smith, who last played with the Panthers in 2009, and was last on the Dallas Cowboys roster. They also signed CB Michael Greco who was with Green Bay.
I feel bad making it seem like these guys have no future, but realistically, based on their prior experience it seems neither have a legitimate shot of making the 53. Sure, anything is possible... but these definitely seem like 'camp body' signings to me.
Unless Marty Hurney and co. truly have an ace up their sleeve it does appear that the Panthers will plan to start the 2011 season with Chris Gamble and Captain Munnerlyn as the starting CBs. Some fans will see that as a major liability, and I'm not sure I disagree, but right now the CB market just doesn't represent good value. So many teams are looking for corners that the smart move may be to stay pat and see who is left on the market. Getting into bidding wars simply wont improve this team long term.

Good point James
CB has been a concern to me & I’ve wondered why we havnt thrown in our hat. But to overpay when Capn is there makes no sense. Hogan was considered a 1st round talent as well. Still, after the dust settles I’d like to see us grab a big name. Of course we gotta save something to do next year.

really are you for real
I can care less about how the newbees navigate, I wanna know how the first pratice was and who did what
i keed, i keed!!
(trusting James read that post last nite)
I'm not counting Greco out
Smith, I’m sure is a camp body. Greco has talent though! The kids numbers were real nice. He has great size as well. Now before y’all go jumping on me about “he aint never done nothin”, remember who our DB coach is. Ron Meeks turns nothing into something. If Meeks can’t get this kid to play, then it is what it is. He will be a player that I keep my eye on though. BTW, he used to play QB. I really like that. I like for players on D to have a deep understanding of what the O is trying to do, and what they are looking for.

I checked his stats at NFL.com
They didnt have anything on him at all. Where did you get his numbers? Can you post them?
Can't at the moment
I’m talking about his pro day numbers. So google his scouting report.

agreed
Plus remember Rivera, McDermott, and Meeks do alot with guys you have never even heard of. I mean of course we have more talent of the Defensive side of the ball then the Chargers especially now but last year nobody could really name anyone off the Chargers defense not named J. Williams or Weddle. Meeks will turn this secondary around, heck that what he did for many years before becoming a DC with the COlts.
CB Depth Chart (as I see it week one barring any injuries/signings)
CB#1- C. Gamble
CB#2- C. Munnerlyn
CB#3- B. Hogan
CB#4- K. Burney
CB#5- R. McClain
Cuts: D. Hall, C. Gordon, M.Greco, CJ. Wilson
If Burney and Hogan play half way decent at all we could be better off then most teams think.
GO Panthers.

I think Wilson might surprise people this year
The guy played very well before injury last year if I recall. If he can stay healthy, I think he could be capable of competing for the Nickel spot.
Everyone does know Hogan failed his physical
At best he STARTS practicing end of september according to what everyone has been saying. So listing him 3 may not help. I could be wrong and starts sprinting, back peddling, and making cuts in 4 weeks, but he wont be full tilt boogie for a little while.

I like C.J., I met him in Terrell, TX during my stint in Dallas.
He was shocked to meet a diehard in the midst of cowgirl country.

Greco Had Great Workout Numbers Before The 2010 Draft
FS Michael Greco (6-2, 7/8, 224, 4.40-40, 22 bench reps, 41 1/2 inch vertical, 10-9 broad jump, 6.80 3-cone drill, 4.10 20 yard shuttle), he first signed with NC St., before switching to UCF where he was their starting QB until switching to FS as a senior. He has great size and speed for a DB, and could morph into a hybred SS/OLB combo, who could be a WLB that can shift to SS as a 5th DB on passing downs. If he doesn’t make the roster, then he should land on the Practice Squad as a great developmental prospect (like with the Packers in 2010).

Great numbers, great athlete, great size. I could envision him as a stout blitz threat...
while also being able to cover in nickel/dime packages. Seems like a perfect guy for Meeks to mold, so I’m not ruling him out just yet.
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
FS Quentin Scott Cut By Raiders Is A Carbon Copy Of Greco
If you like Greco, then you might also like FS Quentin Scott (6-3 7/8, 224, 4.40-40, 13 bench reps, 35 inch vertical, 10-1 broad jump, 6.80 3-cone drill, 4.18 20 yard shuttle) who was just cut by the Raiders. Though he wasn’t drafted in 2010, nfldraftscout.com rated him as the 10th best FS, and #201 best player in the 2010 draft. He played both S and LB at Northern Iowa, but his scouting report says he’s very good in coverage, inspite of his height. Here is the link to his scouting report. http://www. cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/historic/1693199

Twitter feeds from Reed and Gantt have a lot of comments on first practice
Also the CO had some stuff on it. Cam was the draw but Armanti stole the show yesterday. Of course, no pads and no hitting means a lot of people look good.
goody used to be the one winning the "beast in no pads" award
but i think he shook that title with his solid on the field performance last year. he belongs
LOL true true - and I am pulling hard for Armanti, he will get a shot this year
Also they said Olsen was hauling in passes off the machine from 7-10 yards out with one hand at one point. We got a STEAL on him – Smitty also had some good things to say about getting him. I cant wait to see him out there.
I think
that the odds of Hogan or Burney becoming a starter and a decent one at that are pretty good. If one pans out then we are golden.
And over there in the tree, is a chipmunk nest. And that right there, is our corn, best in the city, it's delcious. And that is a crazy lady. So now you pretty much know what I do. Pretty dang exciting, huh?
Yep
I hope both due, and those high price CB’s such still on the market or already signed will not do anything aka . A. Haynesworth’s dieases HA HA. Burney could be a nice pickup and if Hogan is 100% and matures with Rivera and his defense he could be a great starter for us. Munnerlyn is good CB and he will land a starting job b.c. he is the second best CB on the roster at this time. Glad to see Marshall is gone, he is trash and cannot cover anyone whatever the Cards paid they got ripped.
Just in. P Burress – signing with the Jets, oh get more R. Ryan we are gonna win the Super Bowl get just what we need another reason to hear that “fat ass” flap his gums some more. Hope the Jets don’t win anything this year.

Burney looked pretty decent. Captian did as well. Cam was great when there was no defenders. Average with defenders and extremely average with the full d involved. Armanti was overall good, didnt drop a pass or punt and looked very quick. Clausen was decent most times and when full D was on very unsure.
Interesting comments from Rivera
(Per Steve Reed) the Panthers are still on the hunt for a vet QB. Volek is out. They will have to get someone fairly soon to get them into camp and work them out with the team.
I'd be all for Jake.
Let’s pick ’em up.

My dear and fuzzy jesus. Nah I would have him as a BACKUP only and mentor. If we treat him like Barney Fife. He gets a helmet, but Rivera keeps his chin strap in his pocket.

LMAO... I do love me some old black and white Andy.
There’s a lot of good reasons for picking up Jake; but, I can think of one reason not to. Jake was such a fan favorite, would we be hearing “we want Jake” if Cam struggles?
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
Oh I highly doubt that
At least after that first interception, lol.
As the great philosopher Yoda said "Try not! Do you must!"
y
yea i was there. Kalil looked fine no limping but didnt really participate much, just iced it.
And really...
I think it’s good for MacBern to get a little more experience there. We HAVE to have someone to be Kalil’s backup.

Would love to steal Sam Shields away from the Packers...
Would Conner or even perhaps Armanti be enough to deal for him? Greco just kind of made me remember him is all…
Armanti's not going anywhere till he get's a fair chance.
Hurney and Richardson both like the kid a lot.

Probably not
I know they just waived one of their starting ILB’s and Conner could fit in nicely with them…I would ship him for Shields in a heartbeat…
I'm still dreaming of Asante Samuel...
the fact the Panthers have now said they have no interest smells of subterfuge!
It is weird
I wonder if it was the Eagles unamed sources within the league saying that the panthers were interested to up the price or if it is now the panthers trying to cool down the soreing asking price.

Greco?
Oh well, we still have one more spot im betting on a vet QB. I think we could still contend but going out and getting Greco and not a better CB to line up beside Gamble shows me that being competetive is not there main priority this year.
fact is we've got as many spots as we need to have for good players to sign
i know youre talkin about the 90, but lets face it, 35 of those 90 are expendables, so we can sign as many good players as we want in the coming weeks….and just cut one of the expendables
Just your opinion...
But I don’t think the Panthers should worry about DB’s as long as they can get push on the front line and have the QB’s scrambling or rushing the pass. So they could start Asscrack McGee at corner or Mediocre Ray and as long as that line is getting push and they don’t leave McGee or Ray on an Island by themselves, the Panthers should be good…IMO, would love opinion from former or staring Armchair QB’s..
Ahh yes, the much under appreciated Asscrack McGee.
I’d hate to be out there stranded on Asscrack island.

Greco
For those of you that couldnt read………Greco is a Safety not a CB. If you looked at his pro day numbers he ran a 4.37 at 223 lbs and can jump through the roof. The guy is a tremendous athlete who just needs a little more experience at safety ( being a former QB) to make an impact. Worst case, he is a tremendous developemental player and probably the reason you have developmental squads in the first place.
