Friday Morning FA Open Thread
Today's the day that all the free agent moves that have been made become official, so there should be no shortage of news throughout the day. Hopefully all the Panthers deals go through without a hitch and we can start looking forward to what these guys are going to do on the field.
Let's start the day off with some free-flowing conversations, Panthers fans!
News and notes from the past few days:
- In what can only be described as an emotional move, it appears that K John Kasay will be released today. Apparently the front office told him they were going to go in another direction, thus explaining the signing of Olindo Mare on Wednesday.
- The Panthers have released their official training camp schedule. You can find it here.
- Second year DE Greg Hardy was involved in a motorcycle accident last week in Tennessee. While he's not seriously injured, he will have to miss the first two weeks of training camp. You can read the Charlotte Observer's account of the story here.
- The Panthers have decided not to trade WR Steve Smith, and Smitty has said that he wants "to remain a Panther for life". I for one couldn't be happier! Details about this can be found here.
- The Panthers have agreed to a 1-year contract with former Eagles and Jaguars S Sean Considine. Read more about it here.
- The Panthers have traded with the Bears for TE Greg Olsen. Read about this trade here.
- MLB Jon Beason has agreed to terms of a contract extension of 5 years, $50M ($25M guaranteed). Read about Beason's contract extension here.
As always, stay tuned to CSR for any breaking stories throughout the day.
Let's hear what you've got to say Panthers fans! This is now an open thread!

I definately second that emotion...
Just wondering if we plan to address the corner situation or going bigger on the Defensive Tackle position. I think Pat williams is still availible.

Gosh
It would have been great if we had got Ray Edwards too.
Coach Rivera, may we please have one of these FA Nnamdi Asomugha or Jonathan Joseph
ya thanks espn
I woke up and almost shat my bed seeing that
Hell, at this rate nothing would surprise me.
Someone asked me on Twitter if we could go after Asomugha, and I honestly needed to think about it before saying ‘no’. At this rate I have no clue what will happen next
I posted a fan shot but Gross said he met JR at his house in December he told him they was hriing a defensive minded coach..check…drafting a QB #1..check..being aggressive in FA..check…and winning a Super Bowl in 3 years….

i heard Orton was the best
Trying to bring in more offers for Orton. Quinn gets anxious and loses his mind, and Orton chokes. Tebow is the best option for them because he knows how to win. Orton is a solid QB, but he’s not a franchise QB. They should get rid of Orton, and let Tebow play. If he has a Clausen-esque year, they’ll have a shot at another QB in the draft. Don’t be surprised if Foxy tries to snag Moore.

That's why I haven't even tried to sign up for a fantasy Football League yet.
I’m gonna wait until the dust settles and then I can get a better concept of what players will do good on their new or current teams.
Speaking of FFL, which Panthers are you guys expecting to do well this season? I’m thinking Olsen and Shockey, D-Will, and Beason on D. I don’t think Cam will set the world on fire this season, and I’m too scared to draft any of our WRs.
In situations like this when things are bad, the easy thing to do is fold up the tent, just pack it up and accept it. I would draft the following Panthers:
D-Will
J-Stew
Smitty
Olsen
Shockey (if you have a deep league)
Gettis (if you have a deep league)
One cries because one is sad. For example: I cry because others are stupid, and it makes me sad.
Should be noted and im not saying Cam is going to be a world beater off gate but mobile QBs are VERY VERY high value in fantasy football. Vick killed everybody last year and Tim Tebow put up big numbers in his games. When you add in rushing with passing it leads to big fantasy points. You could take him as a 2-3rd QB for back up

Rules and Regulations of the Game: 89, Bottom Line
by John Chilton on Jul 29, 2011 8:37 AM EDT up reply actions
Ochocinco makes a lot of sense, but Haynesworth makes no sense
Isn’t playing on a 3-4 what pissed him off about Washington? He is so much better suited for 4-3. For a 5th rounder, I think he would’ve been a much better fit in Carolina.
by Daddy Jacks on Jul 29, 2011 8:47 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
The Patriots play in a 4-3 roughly 40% of their defensive snaps.
I don’t approve of how they do business, but I idolize their model. Haynesworth and Johnson will be insane for New England
to be fair,
Haynesworth couldn’t pass his conditioning test last year. He’s not going to be in any better shape than he was in DC. Maybe he finds a renewed motivation being on a contender but it remains to be seen.

I agree...
That conditioning test crap was just Mike Shanahan being a dick.
But, Haynesworth is still lazy.
One cries because one is sad. For example: I cry because others are stupid, and it makes me sad.
lazy, maybe
but if he only plays 40% of the snaps, and is fresh i the 4th quarter, he could make good things happen late in the game
by usana_gaines on Jul 29, 2011 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions
yeah but it doesn't change the fact that he couldn't pass a simple conditioning drill,
was out of shape and is lazy. And he flat out quit on a play. And I don’t expect Bellichek to say anything different. He hopes Haynesworth will get his act together but only Fat Al knows if he’s willing to do it.

Still doesn't seem like a great fit
Haynesworth is just gonna pout if he’s off the field for more than half the snaps.
But I agree. I don’t understand why teams are always willing to give away there players to The Pats for next to nothing. Makes me think they moved there video dept from walk throughs to GM bedrooms.

That’s great.
Let’s stay out of the Asomugha sweepstakes, because we have to sign our punter to a $20M deal. We can’t spend any money on an All-Pro CB, because then we won’t have anyone to punt the ball 8 times a game.
Makes perfect sense…

To be fair to the Bucs.
Nnamdi wouldn’t quite be worth 16 million in their Tampa 2 defense. Corner isn’t a high priority position since they play zone, and they are very deep even if they don’t have a bona fide talent there.

Matt Maiocco
The 49ers contacted Carolina free-agent QB Matt Moore, but it’s not going to work out. Moore will go in another direction, I’m told.
So, it seems Moore has a solid offer from someone, and will take that rather than play third fiddle to Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick under Harbaugh
This makes me wonder about the Miami Dolphins rumors from several months ago...
The media made it seem like an Orton-to-Miami deal was all but done, then all of a sudden, he’s taking snaps with the first team at camp in Denver.
Anyway, thanks for the info.

Good morning everybody.
Ready for another great day in Panther land. From what I hear this weekend will get even busier for most teams, than the last 2, so I buckled in and ready for football transaction flying everywhere.
Wonder what surprises are in store for us today. Who woke up yesterday thinking we would land a franchise tight end?
I like collard greens.
unfortunately for me
waking up and thinking aren’t used in the same sentence, unless it’s what the hell was I thinking to be waking up!!!
I really wanted the Panthers to get Olsen in the draft so that was icing on the cake so far for me.
All of these moves, signing and trades have been great, except the Kasay retirement/release.
Now if the Panthers can sign Manny Lawson to play DE instead of LB opposite of CJ my happiness level will be through the roof. I would even try and may the 5 hour trip to Charlotte for a couple games and brave the heat to see TC at wolford

i know ya hate me BUT.
i have to say all the move they making on Ofence is not really making me buy in on the panthers. think about we are going to be a small ball team. like the pats did with brady. we are just going to pass for 5-10 a play. lets hope it works
with Cam thats going to be the best approach
run heavy, and short passes to move the chains. I hope that’s the plan, like what they did with Bradford in StL.

Historically, offense takes longer to build than defense
With a young QB roster, it’s just going to take time. There are excellent pieces in place, we just have to wait for the QBs. Having a strong running game will help with that.

but to an extent
small ball is how you bring the safeties up and then BAM! Steve Smith over the top, at the 30 the 20 the 10….TOUCHDOWN, CAROLINA!!!! Remember all of the wide open Moss TD’s?
Thats the way to win in our division
The longer our O is on the field the longer Ryan, Brees and Freeman are on the bench.

Has there been any news on the health of Jeff Otah?
I havent seen or heard anyhting and was wondering if the Panthers should maybe take a flyer on RT Sean Locklear? Can start if need be and would be good depth also.
Bad spellers of the world untie.
Yesterday someone posted that Otah is in fantastic shape and is healthy

Perhaps, but doubtful
It seems like Gamble wants to “chase every last dollar out the door” according to Gantt.
Telling, isn't it?
I love Chris Gamble, and he’s a pretty quiet guy when it comes to the media… but if Gantt is accurate about this then it hardly has the same ‘everyone pulling in the same direction’ vibe to it that the rest of the players exhibit.
With Hurney being a salary cap expert
and the Jets and Cowboys supposedly being able to fit him in somehow, we could too
42
I mean we could try and sell him on the idea that
he can really show how good he is in our division with Brees, Ryan, and Freeman. And his legacy would be how much better he makes a 2-14 team…..but to be realistic, it wont happen
Greg Cosell has us pegged...
gregcosell: Panthers will look to play like Jets last 2 yrs. Run ball, play good defense (Jets better) + minimize impact of QB. Must be creative on off.
Couldn’t agree more. If anything we will probably be even more creative than the Jets with Chud at the helm of our offense.
id question Jets better on defense past two years then we could be. Ron had the #1 defense last year not Rex foot fetish time to eat G"D snack ryan

You raise a good point
As much as the lockout sucked, at least this hasn’t felt like we’ve had months of waiting and pining for football.
We were just pissed off, and now have more news than we know what to do with and we get preseason games in 2-3 weeks
I don't know about anyone else...
But in retrospect, the lockout was worth it.
One cries because one is sad. For example: I cry because others are stupid, and it makes me sad.
Pretty cool week indeed.
Between this and monitoring the MLB trade rumours……Hunter Pence anyone???? ;-)
Please! I pray the Braves get Hunter Pence
then this would make the greatest week of my life…. lol
Either Pence or Upton
But im going to be sick if they get Ludwick or Willingham, heck even if they take Crisp ill be ok with it just not those two.
Well prepare to be sick...
You and I both know that FW is going to get one of those two…probably Willingham. It’s a typical FW move. We have tons of pitching prospects, and only 5 rotation spots, yet FW wants to let them rot in the minors while other teams in the NL beef up for a playoff run. We could have Pence or Upton if we wanted, or if FW would part ways with some prospects…but nooooooo….we get to see Josh fucking Willingham instead.
One cries because one is sad. For example: I cry because others are stupid, and it makes me sad.
Wren is screwing the Braves
I know you dont give away strong pitching prospects, but we have to many almost and we are getting quslity franchise players in return. Thats ok I guess he doesnt want to beat the Phillies, what a competitor.
Right. And I’m not saying trade Teheran and Delgado plus other prospects for Pence/Upton, but my god…we can let go of some of our prospects.
One cries because one is sad. For example: I cry because others are stupid, and it makes me sad.
I think we should just go after Upton
He will be much much cheaper then Penc, and if he get a good change of scenery then I feel he could be better then Pence. Like I said id rather get Coco Crisp then those other two no names, I think we will have troubles making the playoffs with those two.
I agree.
One cries because one is sad. For example: I cry because others are stupid, and it makes me sad.
No Way
The Phillies aint gonna give up UUpton with the season he’s having.

Can you imagine how are new coaching staff must feel?
How pumped the coaches must be to step in to this situation, with all the pieces coming together and the excitement to put together their plan. To know that tonight they gather as a team for the first time with its core of players locked up, financially rewarded, and pumped out of their mind over the moves this organization has made the last to days. I only wish I could be there when coach R has his opening speech to the team. It is going to be a great moment. I hope they all enjoy what is about to happen

How amped must Chud be?

A couple of months later Steve Smith wants to stay and he has Greg Olsen and Jeremy Shockey to play with
JR seems to really let this staff and hurney go at it. The staff told Hurney what they needed/wanted and he got it done. I say this entire FO worked real well this off season. While Big Cat was away working on the CBA our guys was putting in serious work

Seems to be Richardon and Hurney's way
When Fox first stepped in after Seifert was pushed out they basically gave Fox all the pieces he needed to put his brand of football on the field. Low and behold, the panthers were in a Super Bowl within 2 seasons. I see Big Cat and Hurney operating the same way with Rivera this time around. Credit Marty Hurney with making the actual moves, but together, these two have a sound philosophy when it comes to rebuilding…

I mean with Smitty, Gettis, LaFell, Pilares, that receiver from Auburn, and Jamorris Warren (109 rec for 1400+ yds and 20TDs as a senior), maybe Armanti doesn’t make the cut. Warren is 6’1" and 197.

Think about the most valuable piece on his chess board, the TE. Don’t you think the TE is much like a Knight in Chess? A knight is a piece you can use to block, but you can also use it to attack. Knights always seem to come out of nowhere and attack when you least expect it.

Last year the defense did fairly well. I think if they get some pass rushing going on the corners are going to have an easier job. Not to mention, if our offense does halfway decent, the defense will have somewhat fresh legs compared to last season.

We still have no clue what kind of QB Cam will be. I’m optimistic and excited to see him play, but the truth is he could be a Probowler in 3 years… Or he could be out of the league. But all these weapons we’ve accumulated mean squat if Cam can’t play.

Matt's a smart dude for picking Miami over some of the offers he was supposedly getting...
Really wouldn’t be surprised to see him push Henne for playing time early, provided he’s recovered from the Labrum injury; maybe not having the pressure on his shoulders early on will do him well?

he actually would've made fairly good sense out in Denver had Orton been traded....
Fox likes Tebow, and the rest of the organization likes him too, but if they lost Orton, Moore would’ve been a good “low risk/potentially high reward” signing that would’ve allowed for good, open competition in camp without having any personality/expectation conflicts amongst the QB’s….

It sounds like Seattle really wants Mebane back.
I think bringing in Jenkins and Clements would be great.

Maybe a cheaper option would be Derrick Harvey?
He just got released and was the 8th overall pick just a few years ago. Just thinking out loud on that one.

I'm just thinking out loud too
Personally I’m not counting on seeing anymore names coming here but wouldn’t be surprised if we did considering what we’ve done already.
I just know I wouldn’t mind have Jenkins or Clements here.

Wow. SO glad we didn't pick him in the draft.
That year many had us picking him…

I take a swing at signing him if I was Hurney
Young player, obviously talented to go #8 overall. I’d certainly entertain the idea if I was him.
In situations like this when things are bad, the easy thing to do is fold up the tent, just pack it up and accept it. So this mighta already been covered...
but while all these other teams are wetting there pants over the tought of namdi, maybe we should try to sneak in and land cromartie? I still think we have a hole at the CB position, still not sure about Brandon Hogan

I was saying that the other day...
That we should go nab Jenkins and Jonathan Joseph while all the other teams were focused on Mebane and Nnamdi.
That said… Nnamdi and Cromartie apparently have the same agent, so I’m guessing he’s not truly available right now as it sounds like he is the prize for the runner up in the Aso sweepstakes.

I’ve thought about that also but I’ve decided it would be more beneficial to go with Clements as a stop gap until Captain or Hogan are def ready
I could be wrong....
But I think somebody on here said the end of September is when Hogan is likely to be healthy.
