Thursday Evening FA Open Thread
It's been a rather quiet day on the free agent front for Panthers fans, but we do have word from several sources that the front office is working diligently to sign all the draft picks today. Once we know contract details we will pass along that information as always.
At any rate, let's keep the conversations flowing Panthers fans!
News and notes from the past few days:
- DeAngelo Williams is back! 5 years, $43M ($21M guaranteed). Read about it here.
- The Panthers have signed former Jets TE Ben Hartsock to a 2 year deal. More information here.
- In probably the biggest WTF moment of the offseason thus far, the Panthers have signed K Olindo Mare to a 4 year, $12M contract. More information on this signing here.
- In one fell swoop, James Anderson and Thomas Davis were re-signed to 5-year contracts. The Panthers have also added two more DB's to the roster: CB Cletis Gordon and S De'Von Hall. Details of their deals can be found here.
- In what can only be described as an emotional move, it appears that K John Kasay will be released today.Apparently the front office told him they were going to go in another direction, thus explaining the signing of Olindo Mare on Wednesday.
- The Panthers have released their official training camp schedule. You can find it here.
- Second year DE Greg Hardy was involved in a motorcycle accident last week in Tennessee. While he's not seriously injured, he will have to miss the first two weeks of training camp. You can read the Charlotte Observer's account of the story here.
- The Panthers have decided not to trade WR Steve Smith, and Smitty has said that he wants "to remain a Panther for life". I for one couldn't be happier! Details about this can be found here.
- The Panthers have agreed to a 1-year contract with former Eagles and Jaguars S Sean Considine. Read more about it here.
As always, stay tuned to CSR for any breaking stories throughout the evening.
Let's hear what you've got to say Panthers fans! This is now an open thread!

We know we have a great team. We know history shows that the 4th team in the NFC South usually wins the division. And we know we have Cam Newton.
Why can’t we bounce back? Why can’t we be champions this year?
Just a little food for thought.

So not much new since teams were able to release players?
I had to step out for a couple hours and expected to miss a ton, but in skimming comments I didn’t see much.
JR said he doesn't expect any trouble signing Cam
That’s from Pat Y referring to JR’s words during a podcast. I expect we’ll here something before camp tomorrow. You know Cam wants to be on the field.

"A player and a draft pick"
Curiosity abounds as to what those are.
The relationship of trading with Chicago continues! Let’s hope this is more replicant of Chris Harris trade v1!

Currently… they only have Matt Spaeth, and they just came to terms with him yesterday. Barnidge or Rosario maybe?

If that's the case, that would be even better.

I bet we lost Danny C though.
I remember wanting Olsen real bad
Then we traded down, and I was like what the hell is this? Then we drafted some guy named Beason. Well Beason has been all that and more, and now we got Olsen, too, who was never happy in Chicago.
Now he has a Man who knows how to use him CHUD!

I am now convinced that Hurney was held back in years before by John Fox and Jerry Richardson.
John Fox is now gone and Jerry Richardson is practicing the art of the Open Hand rather than the Closed Fist. He told Marty Hurney he was free and Hurney quickly evolved into Duke Nukem.

Such a perfect signing!
I know we just brought in Shockey but Shockey, Olsen, Williams, Stewart, Smith sounds like a damn good set of weapons for Cam in his rookie season.
Gone are the days of the defense focusing on just one guys!
Shockey was foresight to bring some strength to a position of weakness.
When Olson became available, the FO saw it as the opportunity to really strengthen the position for the future.
by Panthers FTW on Jul 28, 2011 6:21 PM EDT up reply actions
I think keeping them both for the time being is great idea
We can eat up some clock with running and passes to TEs all day long now.
Keep them both around to make Cam’s job easier for a year or two!
shockey can teach Olsen
When Shockey is playing, he’s one of the best. He could instill some blocking and a mean streak in Olsen. Then Olsen starts going to pro bowls with Cam, Smitty, Beason, D-Will, CJ, Stew and Kalil
by usana_gaines on Jul 28, 2011 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Exactly my point...

I don't think the Bears would trade their TE
For a second year reciever from a 2-14 team that had the league’s worst offense…
But who knows…
Geez the media needs to get on the ball and get the details of this trade.

I hope I am wrong.
I heard Tim Ryan, while speaking with a Bears fan on NFL radio, speaking as if the player they received was a track guy that is 6’3", 217 lbs. Gettis fits that description exactly. He probably was speculating, but it just didn’t seem like it to me. Besides, the more I think about it, the less I think they had the news 20 minutes before everyone else.
how do you now?
That hurt. Olsen better be worth it. And a draft pick? Gettis is better than Olsen.
by usana_gaines on Jul 28, 2011 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions
We better.
Gettis is a serious deep threat. We better get a big-bodied, super-fast WR with good hands to replace him. That is, if Gettis is indeed the player.

I have to admit....
that if gaining Olson means losing a good/above average player(Gamble or up and comer Gettis) and a high draft pick(2nd or 3rd), I’m not so excited about the deal.
Let's look at this from a different side folks...
If it is Gettis…
Hurney just traded a 2nd year 6th round WR and another pick for a 1st Round should be All-Pro 26 year old TE. It’s not a terrible deal, even if it is Gettis.
One cries because one is sad. For example: I cry because others are stupid, and it makes me sad.
Yeah. That's exactly how I'm approaching this from this side. I'm not crying at all.
Hurney is a freaking beast.
"Once again the trousers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Which makes me think the Bears wouldn't make that deal
As much as I like Gettis, I would be pissed if I was a Bears fan
Your are correct and we are stock piled on WR’s but i Liked Gettis alot :(

I know, I really need to stop doing that
One cries because one is sad. For example: I cry because others are stupid, and it makes me sad.
I disagree
It doesn’t matter where Gettis was picked in the NFL draft. I mean Tom Brady was a sixth round draft pick and I don’t think that’s hindered his draft value any.
The fact is Gettis is going to be a #1 receiver. He has top end speed and made a big impact on a terrible offensive team as a rookie with no QB. I truly believe he will end up being more valuable than Olsen ever will.
I understand that, but we do have an all pro on our team called Shockey. unless we’re not expecting him to make the team, then I don’t see what we’re doing here with this trade.
we just locked up our TE of the future...
Shockey is gettin old and has at most 3 years left while Olsen has a good 7
Best running back core in the league. Best LB core in the league. & Next great NFL quarterback. Tell me the futures not lookin bright for the Black & Blue.
Shockey is on a one year deal
He is at the end of his career, and has never had a full NFL season. Shockey is not a all pro player anymore
He’s a chud guy and really has never been used right in the NFL. TE is a QB saftey Net and Olsen is much younger then Shockey.
"I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them." - George Bush
"I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant." - Robert McCloskey
But...
what if that 6th rounder became an elite receiver and the pick the Bears gained from us turns into another elite player. People would look at the trade differently IF(yes, it’s a big if) this is was the final result.

Okay my take:
If it’s Gettis (which is the worst case scenario) then this team is still immediately better, by a large margin.
I liked him too, but LaFell and Gettis were very close last year talent wise, and one of them has to be resigned to playing the 3rd WR spot.
If we’re going after a new WR then I bet all signs point to Braylon Edwards over Malcolm Floyd
Damn, adding another Chud follower in Edwards?

As for what Olsen will do in Carolina: He has never had a DVOA (a measure of efficiency per play) above 0 percent since he entered the NFL. Only once has he had a catch rate above 60 percent; the average for tight ends is about 65 percent. He has a rookie quarterback too.
In other words, don’t expect a big year.
