In easily the most surprising news of this free agent period the Carolina Panthers have signed kicker Olindo Mare to a 4 year, $12 million deal.
This is easily the absolute shocker of the week as fans wonder what this means for the future of John Kasay, the original Panther. Perhaps Kasay has decided to hang up his boots after all this time, because as it stands there's absolutely no reason to carry two kickers like Kasay and Mare. The flip side could be that the Panthers see Mare as a true upgrade at this position, as Mare has been more accurate over the last three years than Kasay (88.1% vs. 86%), but regardless it seems extremely odd that the Panthers would part ways with Kasay over 2% accuracy.
We'll update as we know more, but it seems that writers, pundits and players are all stunned by this move.
