DeAngelo Williams returns to the Carolina Panthers with big contract
My only fear with DeAngelo Williams returning is that the Carolina panthers would need to pay too much to retain him. In my mind, they paid a little too much for this one. Numerous sources are now reporting that Williams will return on a 5 year, $43 million deal with $21 million in guaranteed money. However, contracts can't be looked at for just face value. This could easily be a back-loaded deal with money at the end he'll likely never see, so it's important not to cast too many aspersions until we see exactly how it's structured; that will happen on Friday.
Now we're starting to quickly approach the point where the Panthers are running out of cap space to make a splash outside the organization with both Williams and Johnson locked in to long term deals. Unless, of course, the salary cap genies inside the organization have a master plan of how they are going to slot all these deals together.
Aggressive? Check
Locking up key players? Check
Jerry cheap? Way off on that one
This team is being constructed exactly how we expected, and that's a good thing.

Should say...
For the right price, because we have plenty of LBs. But Anderson, Beast, and a healthy Davis is an unbelievable lineup.

plenty? with conner and TD's injury proneness, im not sure how deep we are
we did draft a LB, and im not sure if Williams has recovered from the ACL? but still, i think anderson is a must keep, more so than davis or conner
True as to Connor and TD...
And actually, Williams, too. You have some points. =)
In light of that, Anderson has stayed healthy and played extremely well. I really think that they need to keep him. At the same time, I don’t want to see a crazy overpayment.

TOOOOOOO MUCH
I thought Charles Johnson was paid a tad high. But he may pan out to be worth it. But D Will…..thats another story all together. This is not going to leave much for James Anderson or for any other FA in the open market.

I'm to trust Hurney at this point to manage the cap and execute his plan
Lord knows what details are in the CBA that could help this situation.
True but
Dump Gamble, sign Joseph
Move Godfrey to CB and sign Weddle
Any takers ?

Nope.
Just sign Joseph and have Gamble and Joseph on the outside…that works better.
One cries because one is sad. For example: I cry because others are stupid, and it makes me sad.
nice job guys
ya are on point when it come to panthers updates keep up the good work. just need to make the talkradio every tuesdays more fun.
Hurney is a cap genius
And we’re sticking to the plan of paying our guys. Davis and Anderson are next, followed by Kalil’s and Beason’s extensions. People are getting paid to play in Charlotte.

Yeah, because those guys really helped us excel to great things last year

A QB might have been helpful...

Yup, they were the root of our problems.
In no way where they the bright spots on a bad team, so let’s chunk them out the door.

I'd suggest let's improve our strengths
Instead of bringing back the same team + Cam Newton… But that’s crazy talk right???
STEVE SMITH!
You have to keep your strengths strong.
Btw, we signed a DT, plus we had more draft picks than Cam Newton. And a new coaching staff.
Another generalization in the style of “he who shall not be named”.

Finally
still we need another CB on this roster, b.c. Gamble sucks-Munnerlyn is a nickel CB and the same can be said of Hogan when and if he is healthy.
Beason, Kalil are no our to biggest concerns in my book.
I wouldn’t be opposed to moving Godfrey to CB and bringing in Weddle formerly of San Diego Chargers, Rivera loves him but is their cap space for such a move ?

Great!
just hope we can sign a FA starting corner opposite Gamble
To me there is a reason why D-will was the starter.
I like the combo of D-will and J-Stew but D-will is the better back of the two. I know that is compareing two very close backs but D-will won his job. The great thing is that both are awesome number 1 backs and we have them both. Speed and power.

note to self: for now, delay the casting of aspersions
ok im man enough to admit it. got a BA and an MDiv but have no idea what an aspersion is. help james!!
Aspersion
“casting aspersions” is approximately equal to “criticizing”
To me MDiv just means Mechanical Division though…
Not to be confused with "dispersions". ;)

Little Bit Happy
James Anderson can kick rocks..We have enough LB’s. Thomas, Beason, and Conner. Another quality receiver an OK DB and a some more push on the line is whats needed. I like Hardy and Johnson as bookends. They may have paid DJ a little to much!! They have Stewart and Goodson and Goodson being a poorman’s version of DJ..
Goodson's a waste now
He’s just sitting around until DeAngelo and his 8Mil a year gets injured again. I don’t think Rivera did a good enough analysis of Goodson. Because we have more backs then we can use now, and are extremely thin at other positions.

Maybe Rivera didn't like what he saw in Goodson's film
His productivity running is scratched by his propensity for putting the ball on ground.
Goodson will get on the field on third down, or in the slot. He'll get his touches.
Btw, when Rivera looked at Goodson I bet he saw a guy who was fast, had good hands and big play ability, but ran too high to be an everydown back, not to mention he has as many fumbles in 167 carries as Williams has in 841.

JA had a great yr last year. great attitude and teammate and motor. pay him
i would take him over morgan, i mean conner, any day
WTF are we doing???
I understood paying Johnson big bucks. But now I’m confused… We’re putting all our resources into signing the same players from our friggin 2 win team.
They must really think QB was our only weakness last year.

Like I said, wait to see the deal
Friday will tell us how all of this slots together.
Shoot, if the Jets can find a way to resign Holmes and still find a way to negotiate with Asomugha, I have no doubt Hurney can work this cap situation out
Forget the deal... Look at the players
RB was a strength last year, and still is. But what are we doing to address the weaknesses that led us to a 2-14 record?
STEVE SMITH!
by southtunnel on Jul 27, 2011 2:07 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
That can still happen… the two aren’t mutually exclusive.
We drafted two DTs and just signed a vet = Weakness addressed
Now, CB is still a concern… but there’s still a lot of FA to go.
Draft picks don't necessarily make you better
Especially 2nd round pick or later.
I just dont get what having 3 RBs, in a league that’s based on the passing game, and where UDFA RB’s excel consistently, does for us.
STEVE SMITH!
by southtunnel on Jul 27, 2011 2:16 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
You see the balance swing every few years.
Defense’s are getting smaller and faster to deal with the passing teams, meanwhile we’re still big and nasty. If their defense can’t get our offense off the field and we are stringing long, clock-munching drives with wave after wave of fresh, talented backs, then how is there high-flying offense going to score? Especially now that we have a potential top five defensive unit.

Let's hope our only problem last year was OC and QB
Because it apoears that will be the only major differences on this team

Also the defense looks pretty good now. I'm fairly confident this is going to be a different season

So what happends to Stewart
who will need a new deal in 2 years lol? Perosnally D Will should have been given an extension after 2008 or 09 while he was on his rookie deal. This deal was to keep him away from Denver, Giants, Dolphins. Wish they went after Brandon M, but Denver are going hard at him. Good to see D Will back though.
Stew will get taken care of and if anything he is the most happy abou this deal.
The man gets to play with his best freind for at least two more years and I think that will keep both of them smileing.

Yes what to do with Stewart is a huge problem
We can’t have 90Mil of contracts locked up in 2 RBs. And if he leaves were stuck with a RB with not enough tread left. And that will all happen right when we’re hopefully getting back to being a contender.

wrecking machine
I love Stewart but he runs over people, and look at barber, you can only do that so long. I am not sure he is a long term option, they are both young, we will see.

DeAngelo or Stewart?

I kinda sorta think the cap will be higher in two years.
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
TE
They need to resign Rosario now. He could be a beast under the new coaching staff, especially if Shockey gets hurt again.
Naw lets wait and see how he and Gary B
performs, because if they flop well they will draft a TEnd in the 2012 draft.
rosario is a UFA, isnt he?
i mean, we cant wait to decide on him, we have to give him a contract or watch him leave, right?
yes he is
He is a FA now. Barnidge and Shockey are under contract but I think Rosario could be a better receiving threat and a play maker. I don’t know, I just have always like the guy.
yes he's a UFA
and if he leaves then they must believe in Gary B for now. Wouldn’t be surprise if he flops they just draft a TEnd to develop in 2012.
Delhomme
Jake just got released from Cleveland….I hear Jerry is trying to recoup some of his money by having Jake work at one of his Bojangles’..
forgive me jake haters but
we really could do worse than jake for a mentor for cam. and i would take him over jimmy as a backup. im just sayin… the price would be right, and he could retire a beloved panther, on a better note than he left….maybe
back in Car?
Jake to mentor the young QB’s? Back in Car, good Idea?

Jake
He should learn to say, “Would you like Bo-Rounds or Cajun Fries with your 6-piece?” or "Can I interest you in a Bo-Berry Biscuit for a dollar more? " But seriously do you think Jake will fumble the change and drop it on the floor or just give it to the person standing behind you?
great
Great! A little high but glad hes back. I just hope we can make a big move in FA for WR and CB, how much in cap space do we have left to work with?

Good to see Double Trouble back together
Nice start to free agency IMO. Can’t wait to see Cam, DeAngelo and J-Stew in the same backfield on plays.
Yay!! one out of my 4 jereys is still on the team!! LOL
Rocking the boat and righting the ship! Making the moves needed...Go Panthers!!!
Double Trouble back together!
Glad that he got locked up! And for all you worry warts, he more than likely will get restructured or released down the road so why worry? FO getting the job done, now lets work towards winning!!!
Ok, I've calmed down now
Upgrade our CBs now and I’ll be happy.

HalleluuuuuYA!
Keeping The Shock in the Shock and Awe running attack is perhaps one of the best moves a team I have loved since day one has ever made. Deangelo You are a Panther! In the likes of Mills,Moose,Walls, and Kasy….You are also an honorary Carolinian..Smitty PLEASE stick around you know ya want a statue out there with Sam, would electing ya Governor help…Mr. Johnson we will soon be saying Julie Peppers didnt you date her in school? Coach R. you have a team here that could quite easily pass the Dynasties of the 80’s and 90’s. work em, keep em, and teach em what real success brings….DW…Thanks for staying
Double Trouble & Newton
Carolina has the name value and marketing tools but we need for both of these guys to deliver.
D-will was a good sign did we over pay a little maybe but the contract is gonna be back loaded and in a two years when J.Stew’s contract is up we will simply dump d-will and keep Stewart.
Good move and just as promised by Richardson and JR.
We are not done yet more moves to come. I would not break the bank to keep J. Anderson SAL lb’s are no that hard to find unlike WIL LB’s aka T. Davis but T. Davis is very injury prone I don’t know if I would even keep him at this point either.
K. Bulluck was rumored as a replacement for J. Anderson and if Smitty is traded B. Edwards was rumored to be a guy to replace him in Carolina as well.
Still who knows but i luv this coming home everyday and seeing who is going where . Best Free agency period EVER in the NFL.
