I may have wasted a 6th round draft pick in my 4/26 mock draft, but I am elated to hear that undrafted free agent rookie Offensive Tackle Byron Bell has apparently agreed to become a Panther. This is great news, as we seemingly have landed a prospect that has a real chance to compete for a position at guard. More on Bell after the jump.....
As best described by ProFootball Weekly's scouting report:
Positives: Has a big, thick trunk, wide shoulders, and raw, brute strength. Stops defenders in their tracks on contact and has good base, anchor strength - seldom is knocked backward. Good balance - plays on his feet.
Negatives: Relies too much on his natural talent and is inconsistent with his technique. Average footwork. Late to reach the second level and cut off the wide rush. Marginal work habits and football intelligence. Makes too many mental mistakes, is overwhelmed by the blitz and allows free rushers. Avg arm length for the outside.
Summary: Built more like a guard than a tackle. Bell may struggle with how much faster defenders can get on top of him in the inside and will require time to acclimate to the pro game. Has enough physical talent to earn a job in the pros but mist prove that he can handle its mental demands.
NFL Projection: Sixth - Seventh round pick
