This is the continuing story of how the Panthers' position in the Free Agent market stacks up to all the other teams in the League. It's very important to know who will be shopping and who will be praying. Previously we looked at the NFC South. Within that story are further links to details about the CBA and each Team's cap position. If you want to refer back, click here. Last night, I did the AFC West. Today we explore the East Divisions of both the NFC and AFC.
Team by Team Analysis (by division)
Dallas - $16.6 OVER cap, $29.8 OVER floor
# 2011 FAs - 10 total, 7 with 4+ years
Top FAs 2011: RB Deon Anderson; WR Sam Hurd; OTs Doug Free, Alex Barron, Pat McQuistan; OG Kyle Kosier; DEs Marcus Spears, Stephen Bowen, Jason Hatcher; Safeties Gerald Sensabaugh, Alan Ball, Pat Watkins;
Top FAs 2012: RB Tashard Choice; TE Martellus Bennett; OG Montrae Holland; OLB Antony Spencer; ILBs Bradie James, Keith Brooking; CB Orlando Scandrick; P McBriar (Probe Owler)
Draft Picks: Bill Nagy C, Joshua Thomas DB, Shaun Chapas FB, David Arkin OG, Bruce Carter OLB, Tyron Smith OT (Top 10 pick), Demarco Murray RB, Dwayne Harris WR
My free agency forecast for the Boyz: On the Rocks - Worst cap situation in the League, 8 draft picks and a few key FAs they really want to keep. If they lose Doug Free, Romo could be protected by rookie LT Tyron Smith. You never know what tricks J. Jones will pull, but it doesn't look like they can find the dough to be big spenders in FA.
NY Giants - $6.3 OVER cap, $19.5 OVER floor
# 2011 FAs - 17 total, 11 with 4+ years
Top FAs 2011: QB Sorgi; RBs Ahmad Bradshaw, D.J. Ware; WR Steve Smith; TE Kevin Boss; OG Kevin Boothe; DEs Mathias Kiwanuka, David Tollefson; DT Barry Cofield; MLB Chase Blackburn; Safeties Deon Grant, Michael Johnson
Top FAs 2012: QB Rosenfels; WR Manningham; OT Kareem McKenzie; C Shaun O'Hara (Probe Owler); OLB Shaun O'Hara; MLB Jonathan Goff; CBs Aaron Ross, Terrell Thomas;
Draft Picks: Jacquian Williams OLB, Prince Amukamara DB, Marvin Austin DT, Greg Jones ILB, James Brewer OT, Da'Rel Scott RB, Tyler Sash S, Jerrel Jernigan WR
My free agency forecast for the the G-Men: On the Rocks - 8 pretty good looking draft picks to sign, and they'll need them to step up quickly. It looks like they'll be losing some key FAs with the cap situation, unless they break out the chainsaw.
Philadelphia - $39.2 under cap, $26.0 under floor
# 2011 FAs - 17 total, 12 with 4+ years
Top FAs 2011: QB Mike Vick (Franchised, Probe Owler); RBs Jerome Harrison, Eldra Buckley, TE Matt Schobel; OG Reggie Wells; C Nick Cole; DE Victor Abiamiri; OLBs Ernie Sims, Akeem Jordan; MLBs Stewart Bradley, Omar Gaither; CB Ellis Hobbs (may retire); Safety Quintin Mikell; K Akers (Probe Bowler); P Rocca
Top FAs 2012: QB Kevin Kolb (trade bait); WR Desean Jackson (Probe Owler); OT King Dunlap; OG Mike Gibson; DEs Juqua Thomas Parker, Alex Hall; DTs Brodrick Bunkley, Trevor Laws; MLB Joe Mays; Safety Marlin Jackson
Draft Picks: Jason Kelce C, Curtis Marsh DB, Stanley Havili FB, Casey Matthews ILB, Greg Lloyd ILB, Danny Watkins OG, Julian Vandervelde OG, Brian Rolle OLB, Alex Henery PK, Dion Lewis RB, Jaiquawn Jarrett S
My free agency forecast for the the Iggles: Calm Seas - Cannons Loaded, the Green Pearl is seeking plunder. Already well under the cap, they'll free up another $1.4m when they trade Kolb. But they do have 11 (that's eleven) draft picks, a franchise QB, and a pre-eminent Safety (Mikell) to sign. And they can't blow the hole load with Action Jackson entering his contract year. Still, I think Reed will want to make a big-time move in FA, looking to win it all.
Washingon - $4.8 under cap, $8.4 OVER floor
# 2011 FAs - 17 total, 12 with 4+ years
Top FAs 2011: QB Grossman; WR Santana Moss; OT Stephon Heyer; NT Kedric Golston; OLB Chris Wilson; ILBs Rocky McIntosh, H.B. Blades, CB Carlos Rogers; Safety Reed Doughty; P Bidwell
Top FAs 2012: WR Malcolm Kelly; TE Fred Davis; OT Jamal Brown; DEs Adam Carriker, Phillip Daniels, Vonnie Holliday; NT Maake Kemoeatu; ILB London Fletcher (Probe Owler); CB Justin Tryon; Safeties LaRon Landry, Chris Horton, Kareem Moore, K Gano
Draft Picks: Brandyn Thompson DB, Markus White DE, Ryan Kerrigan DE, Christopher Neild DT, Jarvis Jenkins DT, Maurice Hurt OG, Evan Royster RB, Roy Helu RB, Dejon Gomes S, Aldrick Robinson WR, Leonard Hankerson WR,
Niles Paul WR
My free agency forecast for the the Deadskins: Dead in the Water - Bad team with virtually no cap room, especially with 12 (that's twelve) draft picks to sign. How well they drafted remains to be seen, but I do like Hankerson, Kerrigan, and Jenkins. Cutting Haynesworth will save $3.4 against the cap. I'm not sure what McNabb's cap hit is for 2011, but it jumps way up in 2012; so, don't expect Donovan to stay in DC. That also means John Beck may actually be the starting QB. The 'skins are in a world of hurt this year, no matter how you slice it. But rebuilding takes time, right?
Buffalo - $23.6 under cap, $10.4 under floor
# 2011 FAs - 9 total, 7 with 4+ years
Top FAs 2011: QB Brian Brohm; DE John McCargo; ILBs Paul Posluszny, Keith Ellison; CBs Drayton Florence, Ashton Youboty; Safeties Donte Whitner, George Wilson
Top FAs 2012: QB Ryan Fitzpatrick; WRs Steve Johnson, Roscoe Parrish; OT Demetrius Bell; ILBs Andra Davis, Reggie Torbor; CB Reggie Corner; Safety Bryan Scott; K Lindell
Draft Picks: Aaron Williams DB, Justin Rogers DB, Marcell Dareus DT (Top 10 pick), MIchael Jasper, DT Chris White ILB, Kelvin Sheppard ILB, Chris Hairston OT, Johnny White RB, Da'Norris Searcy S
My free agency forecast for the Bills: Floundering in Icy Seas - They have plenty of cap room, but I doubt they spend much, if any, over the minimum. They'll need to figure out what to do at QB, with Fitz in a contract year. So is their best WR. It's really just a cold ass mess from where I'm looking. Poor Dareus, no wonder he looked so sad.
Miami - $16.9 under cap, $3.7 under floor
# 2011 FAs - 11 total, 8 with 4+ years
Top FAs 2011: QB Thigpen; RBs Brown, Williams, Cobbs; TE Joey Haynos; OGs Richie Incognito, Cory Proctor; DE Tony McDaniel; NT Paul Soliai (Franchised);
Top FAs 2012: QB Henne; RB Polite; C Joe Berger; DEs Kendall Langford, Phillip Merling; ILB Channing Crowder; CBs Will Allen, Benny Sapp; Safety Tyrone Culver
Draft Picks: Jimmy Wilson CB, Mike Pouncey C, Frank Kearse DT, Charles Clay FB, Daniel Thomas RB, Edmond Gates WR
My free agency forecast for the the Phins: Choppy Seas - They've got cap room, just no QB or RB. I do expect them to make a run at D-Will, but I have no idea what other plans they may have.
New England - $17.7 under cap, $4.5 under floor
# 2011 FAs - 11 total, 11 with 4+ years
Top FAs 2011: RBs Fred Taylor, Sammy Morris, Kevin Faulk, BenJarvus Green-Ellis; OT Light; OG Mankins (Franchised, Probe Owler); ILB Eric Alexander; Safeties Jarrad Page, Brandon McGowen; K Gostkowski
Top FAs 2012: QB Hoyer; WRs Welker (Probe Owler), Branch; TE Crumpler; OT Mark LeVoir; OGs Stephen Neal; C Dan Koppin; OLBs Tully Banta-Cain, Marques Murrell, Rob Ninkovich; CBs Terrence Wheatley, Jonathan Wilhite; Safeties Brandon Meriweather (Probe Owler), James Sanders;
Draft Picks: Malcolm Williams CB, Ras-I Dowling DB, Markell Carter DE, Marcus Cannon OT, Nate Solder OT, Ryan Mallett QB, Shane Vereen RB, Stevan Ridley RB, Lee Smith TE
My free agency forecast for the the Pats: Calm Seas - What else?
NY Jets - $8.5 OVER cap, $21.7 OVER floor
# 2011 FAs - 17 total, 14 with 4+ years
Top FAs 2011: QBs Brunell, Clemens; RB Tony Richardson; WRs Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards, Brad Smith; OT Wayne Hunter; C Robert Turner; DE Shaun Ellis; ILB David Harris; CBs Antonio Cromartie, Drew Coleman; Safeties Brodney Pool, Eric Smith, James Ihedigbo; K Folk; P Weatherford
Top FAs 2012: QBs Kevin O'Connell, Eric Ainge; RB Tomlinson; WR Jerricho Cotchery; TE Ben Hartsock; DEs Sione Pouha, Ropati Pitoitua; OLBs Bryan Thomas, Jason Taylor; CB Dwight Lowery; Safety Jim Leonhard
Draft Picks: Muhammad Wilkerson DE, Kenrick Ellis DT, Greg McElroy QB, Bilal Powell RB, Jeremy Kerley WR, Scotty McKnight WR
My free agency forecast for the the J.E.T.S.: Taking on Water - Got no money to spend, 6 draft picks to sign, and losing a lot of talented play makers that they can't afford to re-sign. Jenkins' retirement helps a bit, but I'm calling it that the Jets not only don't win the Superb Owl (as Rexy predicts), they won't even make the playoffs.
Next up: AFC South and NFC North
