Rumored Free Agency Rules Do Not Help Panthers

Stay connected for news and updates

If this rumor is true the Panthers ability to re-sign their key free agents just got a little harder:

Owners had asked that they have the right to designate three free agents whose contract offers from other teams they would have the right to match. Instead, players got what they wanted -- four years of free agency with no restrictions.

Players will four years of service will be unrestricted free agents. I think that almost guarantees RB DeAngelo Williams is gone. I can't see the Panthers paying him what he can get on the open market when they have Jonathan Stewart under contract.

The Panthers top priority has to be locking up DE Charles Johnson. If it's safe to assume CB Richard Marshall will leave as well I can't imagine the Panthers not trying to lock up one of the top CBs as well. I assume Ryan Kalil remains franchised and will be re-signed. That leaves LBs Thomas Davis and James Anderson as the remaining top re-signing priorities.
