Notes from the Panthers workout: Confusion continues regarding Steve Smith
Today is the final day of the Carolina Panthers organized team workouts in Charlotte, NC- also, it's the day players have been willing to open up to the media. This isn't blanket, carte blanche access, however, as only Jordan Gross, Travelle Wharton, Cam Newton, Jason Baker and Jon Beason will be made available for interviews.
Newton spent the early time as players arrived casually catching punts from Jason Baker, but revealed some interesting information to the press (courtesy of Steve Reed and Joseph Person): Newton said that Steve Smith attended practice earlier this week and spent some time throwing passes to him. This counters what Smith said a few days ago about not attending the practices due to illness in his family. Smitty is known to be mercurial, but this is as tough to read as any situation we've seen. It should be noted that yesterday Peter King was on Charlotte's WFNZ to talk Carolina Panther football and he confirms what we've heard from numerous sources: He's hearing Smith wants out, and that his preference is to play in San Diego.
More notes and updates after the jump
The below updates are all from Charlotte area sports writers via their Twitter accounts
- Dan Connor is running on the field following his hip surgery (Steve Reed)
- Jon Beason referred to the arrest of his accuser Gregory Frye calling him a "creature of habit" (Joe Person)
- Newton says he's becoming very familiar with the offense. (Mike Cranston)
- Cam Newton was impressed with Steve Smith's speed (Steve Reed)
- 50 players are attending today's workout (Steve Reed)
- Neither Steve Smith, nor DeAngelo Williams are at the workout today (Steve Reed)

Nice to see Smitty has been in fact at workouts. Newton catching punts must of been a sight. Can you imagine a 6’6 250 pound punt returner

Try this Cam...
Take a 7 step drop and see if you can over throw Smitty… nope! ;) I’m hoping Smitty takes a shining to Cam and stays! Oh the post game interviews with those two will be great!
i think this is exactly what's going to happen
everything smitty saw san diego do on offense last year is what we’ll be doing in carolina. he was very impressed with cam and rivera. i forget where i read that. i just don’t see him leaving. so if he is getting paid good money, is impressed with cam and rivera, and has no leverage, then the only way he gets traded is if the staff thinks he should go. i don’t see that happening.
Something that most people overlook with the Smitty saga
Is that he is not going to make $15M over the next two seasons if we trade him somewhere. His new team would only agree to a trade if Smitty agreed to restructure or resign.
That, and picking up and moving his family have to be weighing on his mind.

That, and picking up and moving his family have to be weighing on his mind.
While that may be true, there’s a possibility that the move may be family motivated. In those cases, money isn’t the number one priority.
I hadn't considered that
If that’s true, and a move is what’s best for his family, then let the man go with our blessing. Family should always come first.
I kinda like power running football though. It’s iike a bloody violent ballet…

Actually...
Newton caught punts from the punter at Auburn’s pro day. =) Unlike many QBs (included Bradford last year) who only show up shortly before throwing, Cam was there all day long. You could tell that he was a little tired by the time he started to throw (late in the afternoon). I thought it was cool that he was there to watch his teammates.

I think we can read into this without convicting Smitty of being a liar
He’s had enough time getting to know Cam already, that he’s spoken highly of him. So he probably just made a brief appearance and worked with Cam a bit. But as said, didn’t attend the organized workouts.
Or something like that. I agree Smitty isn’t always direct with his words… But I doubt there’s any foul here. I’m just glad he’s opened a door with Cam.

Newton is supposedly going to guest host Smiths camp coming up. Them becoming friends can only help. If we aren’t able to trade smith its nice knowing he doesn’t want to kill this QB too. Not yet at least.

Rec'd for the Not yet at least...
only seems like a matter of time before Smitty is pissed with his qb… at least briefly
Maybe we should start pointing our pitchforks at DeAngelo instead of Smitty
I mean at least Smitty has met with guys, and even worked a little (ok, maybe more like caught a couple balls) with Cam. But has DeAngelo made an appearance or done an interview at all?
I do know he’s weekly posting pictures of himself on Facebook, doing anything and everything BUT playing football.

Smitty has two years left on his deal. Dwill doesn’t. He is free to leave as he pleases.Smitty on the other hand is forcing his way out. Dwill has also stated he wanted to come back and retire a panther.

One good way to give more than lip service towards wanting to remain a Panther
Would be to make an appearance at organized workouts. There’s plenty of other guys not under contract that have attended.
stay thirsty my friends
I agree.
Hell, Keith Null attended, and he’s going to be cut as soon as there’s a CBA. D-Will should be there.
One cries because one is sad. For example: I cry because others are stupid, and it makes me sad.
Or maybe these are guys that have more important things to do than to run about in shorts without a coach to direct them? Williams at least has constantly said he wants to be a Panther….that’s all most of us need to hear
they do care
I think guys who are not under contract are following the advice of their agents. suppose d-will slips and pulls a hammy, who’s gonna pay for his medical care? he is. it sounds silly, but remember the mess when smitty broke his arm playing flag football? d-will can’t afford that when he is currently unemployed. i bet he’s still in great shape, and i bet there isn’t much for him to learn in the playbook…it will be an easy adjustment for him.
Clearly you haven't seen his Facebook page
skiing, golfing, go-carts, etc. The guy’s by no means taking it easy. Plus no one there is going to forece him in to do any type of contact drills.

Golfing is risky. You can hit yourself in the head with your club, you can trip and fall while walking to the green, you can get run over by a golf cart…

True story:
A guy got so mad, he took his golf bag and threw it into a lake. Shortly realizing his mistake, he dove in and pulled the clubs back out….to get his keys, prompty followed by returning the clubs to the water.
Diving in a lake is risky business. You never know if you’ll end up like Chubbs and have to wear a prosthetic hand.

And if you have problems with gators, call this guy...

“Hell, no! Damn Alligator bit my hand off!”

No less risky then whatever he'd be doing at POTA's
which you know is nothing requiring any type of contact
stay thirsty my friends
Look at what happened to Davis last year.
There was no contact, he tried to stop and back up & boom, there went his entire season. Smart people minimize risk as much as possible. There is no way you can compare golf to running routes & stuff, thats ridiculous. Even Smiths broken arm last year. I am not positive but i think i read that he broke it diving for a catch, with no contact. Players get caught up in the games even when its for fun & accidents happen.
I posted this on another thread already...but
on facebook Deangelo started doing a weekly live stream in which he was adimant about wanting to stay in Carolina as long as they were willing to have him. He’s been very open about it
On WFNZ Richard Marshall said Thomas Davis was there
Along with many other free agents. He said TD was encouraging guys like him to show up regardless of contract. Now that’s a guy who REALLY wants to remain a Panther, and get better.

Yeah, it's hard to get mad at D-Will
He hasn’t said one cross word about the Panthers organization and has said repeatedly that he’d like to return. I think you’re barking up the wrong tree there, ST. Maybe he’s just trying to avoid injuries just in case good ol’ JR doesn’t WANT to bring him back. Ever thought about that? He has to be healthy to get a good deal for another team.
BTW, not trying to bust yer balls, just stating my opinion on the matter.
In situations like this when things are bad, the easy thing to do is fold up the tent, just pack it up and accept it. I never said he's a dick
Thought we were having a rational, wpeculative conversation… Guess not.
He’s still agreat guy. Just suggesting that perhaps he’s not as eager to remain a Panther as say… Thomas Davis.
stay thirsty my friends
As James said Williams will be one of the most coveted FA’s available like it or not its smart for him to sit and wait.
"I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them." - George Bush
"I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant." - Robert McCloskey
To be fair...
DeAngelo’s case is a ratified situation when compared to Marshall or Davis.
Richard Marshall would probably be the 6th or 7th option for teams looking for free agent CBs, same situation with Thomas Davis coming off injury. Both their best chances at continuing their careers is to play nice and try and entice the new coaching staff into needing them.
Williams has nothing to prove. He will be a #1 free agent running back whenever FA starts. Would it be nice for him to be there? Sure… but really, RBs have very little to work on in terms of being ready for the season.
I disagree about Thomas Davis
His last real season was on pace for a ProBowl ending. That’s the type of guy you take a risk on… Not stuff away on the bench.
stay thirsty my friends
But if he is about to hit Free Agency
This is simply a smart move. If he gets hurt…his price goes down on the open market.. and if the Panthers were thinking about resigning..then having another injury might not help their decision to pay big money to keep him..
Now where's my REAL fans at?!
Extrapolating
James, I think you’re over-extrapolating on the whole Smith thing. Smith said he couldn’t attend the workouts last week. Cam threw some passes to him at some point earlier this week . Smith saying he couldn’t attend the workouts, doesn’t mean he won’t show up to some of the future workouts.
Also, re: wife sickness, it could have just been from Tues-Thurs last week, it wasn’t clarified. Hell, he might even be having family troubles and is simply trying to keep his business his own – his entire situation reeks of familial strain and him trying to repair it. I’m willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt. If hes not saying or clarifying something, its because he doesn’t want to talk about it. Give the man some privacy, his intentions will become clear once the CBA is worked out.
He can give himself privacy and not talk to the media at all if that's what he needs right now.
So long as he’s willing to say something publicly and that’s contradicted by another report then we’re going to talk about it.
I’m in the reporting on the Panthers business, not the placate Steve Smith business.
Maybe not...
…but its almost turned into the “bashing Steve Smith” business lately. There is no contradiction in the two reports because the timelines are different, so I find any deceit drama to be TMZ-ish if you’re going to use those two as a base.
It's Julius Peppers 2.0
Some will want to always hear the best, others will be extremely skeptical.
Neither is wrong, time will tell how everything turns out.
Only because the guy has been doing a lot of very strange things lately. And I still do not understand how people think he really wants to stay here. He would have flat out said he wants to IF he really wanted to stay.
This has been a guy who always tells us what he is feeling, be it good, bad, or stupid. The fact that he is mincing words here and not giving us a clear “yeah I want to stay and Carolina” to me speaks volumes about a guy who always speaks his mind. That to me says he wants out without saying it.

4. Jeff Otah did not participate, nor did DeAngelo Williams. I did not see either Charles Johnson or James Anderson, both key free agents.
Where’s Otah? He’s not FA.
by JohnnyMac080 on Jun 9, 2011 10:24 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
Very disappointing to hear Otah wasn’t there. Maybe he’s rehabbing from his offseason shoulder surgery… but still, he’s under contract so he should be there.
Absolutely no point in a guy with Otah’s injury history practicing when it is isn’t mandatory nor is their a coach to direct thing. I’d suspect that might have something to do with Williams not practicing
If for no other reason that team bonding and unity he should be there. If he can’t participate in all the drills, fine… but these 50 player workouts are more about bonding that really getting serious work in. The players know this too… the workouts have been setting up the bonding activities a team normally has during the OTAs, the players have gone out to eat together, gone whitewater rafting, gone bowling etc.
Honestly, there’s probably very little these workouts achieved that will help on Sundays, but getting everyone in the same mindset is invaluable.
I doubt Peyton Manning or Tom Brady would need to workout to get in the football mindset. Some players are disciplined enough to not need a pointless practice session to be ready for football. I think this is all much ado about nothing
Does Jeff Otah really strike you as having Tom Brady or Peyton Manning like discipline?
Furthermore, it’s important to note that Brady has been at every one of the Patriot’s private workouts the last 10 days.
So even the MVP understands the value of these gatherings.
He’s their leader of course he’d be there. Jeff Otah has repeatedly been injured in offseason workouts. What’s the point this time when there’s not even a training staff there for him?
For every reason I listed above.
Dan Connor had surgery… but he’s there
Thomas Davis had surgery… but he’s there
Matt Moore had surgery… but he’s there
As it stands there’s no excuse for the starting RT not to be there, simple as that. If a reasonable explanation arises I’ll change my stance, however, when 50 guys can turn up including guys like Keith Null it’s ludicrous to give a starter a pass.

Yeah, there is a point. Point is, none of these guys know when they will have “mandatory” workouts. These workouts are very important, due to the fact that nearly everyone is there, it helps build team structure, and, as I said, it is important to do these workouts because it may not be until October (perhaps) when they finally have a training camp.
You really want Otah to wait until October or November to start working out and getting back to the field?

If a player misses an organized workout, there has to be a reason
The reason media only had limited access to players, and only on one day, was to encourage out of shape players to show up… without having their lack of conditioning exposed.
So reason one is you’re out of shape.
More reasons: illness, school (for rookies), you don’t want to be on the team, etc. I could see risk of injury being an issue for no-contract guys like Thomas Davis (who was there). But not for proven vets like Smitty and DeAngelo. They can show up and do as much or little as they please… And with no coaches, no one is going to say anthing about it.
But to say you really want to be a Panther, and then not show up at all… I’m sorry Panther-lovers, but there’s a reason.

And maybe it's legit, maybe it's not.
But nobody who cares about football and the team just doesn’t show up without a reason.

They’re just to show up and cheerlead? They’re not going to go an do nothing.. I just dont understand why you’d ride DWill’s jock over something and you dont know if he was there everyday but today…or what his circumstances might be. Basing any opinions on who was or wasnt there today is ridiculous, IMO. But whatever.. He has to lookout for himself considering he needs a contract..be it from the Panthers or whoever..

Thats not a good defense of your position.

The most interesting part of the segment came at the end
They were talking about how much time it may take to sign Cam, since they will sign FA’s first and then may have to wait until other rookies sign their contracts. So if there is a short season then Cam may not see the field until halfway thru it, therefore the Panthers remaining at the bottom of the standings and picking first again.
This led to Adam Shefer’s throw away line at the break that if the Panthers pick #1 again next year, they should take Luck

To BW and BBA...
Well played! =)

It is surprising how much more we (re Cam Newton) have been mentioned I like it.
Even if people who try and cover the Panthers usually have no idea about the dynamics or anything else going on. Press is press.

Any video clips or break downs they do on Panthers is a bonus for me. I mean other then when we make the playoffs we are ignored more often than not. With Cam those days are gone. Might be mainly focused on Cam but other guys will get some shine too.
"I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them." - George Bush
"I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant." - Robert McCloskey
I wonder how it will play out during the season
If Cam actually plays and he is awesome its news. If he is ok no news. If we are DFL then its news again. I also think the Smitty to SD thing and where will D will end up kind of stories will be relevant as well but later.
Each person who showed up gets a plus in my book.
The more times they showed up, the more plus marks they get (of course, I give exceptions for people who have other jobs and such). Despite my Smitty bashing lately, I even give him a plus for coming out. And I’ll avoid any further speculating on him today. =)
A lot of people think “What’s the big deal? They’re just in shorts. They don’t have coaches teaching the playbook. If you may be an FA, what’s the point?” So on and so forth. If you’re of that opinion, it’s fine. But I definitely think that there was plenty to gain.
If I’m on the coaching staff…I’m taking note of who showed up – I think it shows more dedication to the team. If I’m a coach on another team who’s considering going after one of those players in a trade, I’m taking note. For example, Kolb’s almost guaranteed to not be with Philadelphia next season, but he worked out with them. That’s something I take note of – it shows dedication and professionalism. Even if a player’s afraid of injury, coming out at least once just to watch, to discuss what might be happening in the upcoming season, and getting to know the rookies shows that a player gives a crap.
And do not underestimate the value of just getting to know your teammates. The better you know someone, the better you understand his thought processes, and the better you can see his physical abilities and tendencies, the more likely everyone will be able to get on the same page. Yes, Cam’s just a rookie, but he has spent countless hours working with Dorsey to get to understand the playbook. He’s certainly not Chud, but he could at least give some insight into the offense.
How many times did our 2-14 team seem to be on the same page? The Smitty/Clausen combo? The turnstile impressions of the MacBern/Schwartz right-side combo? Our defensive backs (ahem…Marshall and Godfrey)? The examples go on and on.
Here are some examples off the top of my head about how really knowing your teammates makes a difference- and sorry, they’re from college football. But if anyone watched the Colt McCoy/Jordan Shipley tandem, it was obvious that those guys were on the same page. The guys were good friends and roommates. And they were virtually unstoppable. And warning, here comes my Texas Tech homerism. QB Potts and WR Leong (the latter should have been invited to the combine and drafted, btw) were friends who had played together at various levels of football, and they basically spoke telepathically. Generally speaking, Potts was an inconsistent QB, but he and Leong always clicked. They ran a fade to the left corner of the endzone practically every game (sometimes more than once). Every team that played them knew that fade was coming, and rarely could anyone stop it.
Bonding with teammates makes a team better. A very young 2-14 team needs to do everything it possibly can to get everyone on the same page. IMO, showing up to workouts – whether you expect to be on the team or not – shows dedication and professionalism toward your team and/or toward the sport in general.
Getting to specifics about reports from today…
I am so happy to hear that Connor and Davis look like they’re back to full speed. I’m happy to hear that Shockey’s looking good.
I’ll end here and be nice and avoid any player-specific bashing today. At least in this post. =)

Can anyone answer this?
I know that coaches are forbidden to talk to players during the lockout. I think we are all very painfuly aware of that. The question I have is this: Are coaches forbidden to talk to the players’ personal trainers? I’ve been reading a lot about how Cam is really starting to get the playbook down due to his work at IMG with Weinkie and Dorsey.
It really got me wondering… Is it against the rules for Chudzinski, who already knows Dorsey as an acquaintence to call him up and give him intricate details about the plays in the playbook. Can Dorsey or Weinkie call Shula and give him a report on the things they are working on with Cam?
I know it sounds like circumventing the spirit of the lockout, but would it be against the rules?

I would guess that 2nd hand interaction would still be considered interaction.
I would also guess that all 32 clubs are violating the rules in that exact way.

No, it's not against the rules
That’s why Jim Harbaugh is communicating information to Andrew Luck to assist Luck in working with Colin Kaepernick.
The Panthers could have been feeding information to Weinke from day one.
Really?
Hmm…then I’m SURE they are.

Yeah. They are.
There’s no way they aren’t. It’s not against the rules for Chud to talk to Weinke on speaker phone with Cam in the room. It’s illegal for Chud to speak to Cam directly.
All 32 teams are skating around it.

Hey, in my eyes, if you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'
No not really, but in this kind of situation, I think it is almost required in order to keep your job.
These guys are at such a HUGE disadvantage that there has to be something they can do to at least get the plays disseminated down to the players in a way that the players will be able to understand them.

I read an article about how teams are re-thinking the way they organize data and everything
Just goes to show the crazy level of boredom they’re facing.
