Want to see the Panthers' workout? Good luck with that
It appears fans will have to be satiated with grainy cell phone photos, and random eyewitness accounts today as a private workout organized by Jordan Gross and Travelle Wharton begins at Charlotte Christian High School, and will last for the next 8 days. These workouts are private, and the entrance to the school is being guarded by a Police officer. According to Joe Person he estimates approximately 20 players are in attendance.
Based on their Twitter activity/reports we know the following players are participating:
- Cam Newton
- Jordan Gross
- Travelle Wharton
I'm sure we'll get a better idea of the full compliment of the participants.
More after the jump
It's more than a little disappointing the players decided to have this workout be 100% private. On the one hand, I understand not wanting distractions- but fans are allowed at training camp, and that doesn't really derail the work being done there. It would have been a really good opportunity to reach out to the fanbase and get people excited about the 2011 season. Furthermore, it would have been nice to get some information on how Cam is looking after his time at IMG etc. Alas, we'll need to wait.
That being said, there are so many potential controversies I see why the players wouldn't want to open that can of worms. Clausen and Newton, Steve Smith, DeAngelo Williams... the list goes on.
We'll update you with any information we can find on the private workouts.

Is Teh Jimmeh not there workin' out?
He must be. I wonder how they are going to split the QB snaps in say, a 7 on 7 drill?
I don’t know if I can picture Jordan and/or Travelle mediating that.

He is in charlotte and retweeted a tweet about the camp. Id say he is there..Id be shocked if he wasn’t he can’t afford to miss anything anywhere anytime anymore.

Good to see Greg Hardy attending.
You hear stories from Ole Miss of him not being a committed team member. I didn’t see that last year and going to voluntary workouts organized by team members disproves that IMHO.
I want to see him earn a starting spot for next year. He’s a beast.

I definitely want to see Hardy come out even more beastly than last season...
And prove that he’s earned that starting spot across from CJ. =)

That will be probably the best way to get any information about the private workouts. I would venture to say that most of the guys in attendance have an account and have their followers to include those here at CSR. So I think we will all get some sort of insight as to how things are going and especially how Cam looks conducting the drills.

If he isn’t there, then all he does is hurt his credibility. Look at Kevin Kolb, guy who is most likely to be traded this offseason when the CBA is done (if ever). He is at the iggles training sessions with everyone else.
Smitty is just being a pissant little baby if he isn’t attending due to him wanting to be traded.

Very well stated.

Where is Shockers when we need him?
We need someone to infiltrate this practice, and he’s the right man for the job. Hopefully he’s not here at CSR because he’s hiding out in the bushes at the practice field getting us all the juicy information we crave.

I read or heard somewhere (I'm horrible at remembering sources, but I think it was WFNZ)...
That Shockey had called Cam while Cam was working at IMG, and that Shockey said he would be at the practice – he wouldn’t be there on the first day, but that he would be there at some point.
So, I’m happy to see that Shockey has called Cam and is going to be involved in the informal activities.

Steve Reed is reporting via Twitter from Jordan Gross:
carolinagrowl Steve Reed
Gross said after conditioning work the players met for about 90 minutes in the classroom to study the playbook.
I find it humorous they are studying a playbook they’ve had zero instruction on from the coaching staff….okay maybe a couple hours back when the lock out of lifted for a day or so
More from Reed
carolinagrowl Steve Reed
Gross said the training staff from Velocity helped run the conditioning portion of practice.
Free of charge from Velocity? If not, who’s footing the bill? I smell controversy! ;)
Maybe we've got a team full of guys who actually know how to manage their money?
It would be a nice change of pace from the rest of the league lol
Nobody fucks with the Jesus! -Big Lebowski
How can they do that?
JR is cheap, remember? The Panthers players don’t have any money.

Is the security tax payer funded?

Epic.
One cries because one is sad. For example: I cry because others are stupid, and it makes me sad.
On question two:
Is the security tax payer funded?
The answer is ‘no’. Any citizen can hire an off duty police officer for security at an event. When it’s done the city bills the party in question, and 100% of the money goes to the cop as ‘overtime’
Had friends who would throw musical events afterhours at restaurants all the time.
They would always hire 3 off-duties as security and liaisons in case the actual police showed up because of the spectacle.
I was the manager in a movie theatre during college. We always had an officer on Friday and Saturday nights to help control crowds if they got too rowdy
No insult intended by my "high school" statement...
…I was merely a part-time-blazin’, pseudo-assistant manager. I didn’t actually call them in, I just shot the shit with them the entire time they were there. :-D But when someone you know gets shot in the parking lot over some silly, prideful ridiculousness, you support anything that limits that sort of mindless, useless, behavior. And it DID keep the peace…bless ’em.
Wonder if Cam was helping out in that department. According to Weinke he has a pretty good grasp of the play book at this point

word on the street
is that they will open up their last workout to reporters. I believe it’s June 9th.

I dont think Smith will risk practicing.
I think he learned his lesson in the last off season with the broken arm.
That was playing flag football, not practicing for the coming season.
Proud Member of Cat Scratch Reader and coiner of the (minus Bowers) meme
Plus he's under contract whereas many that were there (like rookies) are not
I would imagine their agents purchased some insurance for them but still
With the current state of cba affairs...
Aren’t they all technically without contracts and that’s why they have to cover their own insurance? Therefore there are risks for all involved?
Pure speculation here
but I think Smith would rather not show up and field questions and feel pressure from teammates about his future.

Put a quick fanshot on the front page.
But, per Joe Person:
“Panthers veteran WR Steve Smith was not at players workout, per a source. Smith has given every indication he wants to be traded.”
That’s pretty low, even for Smith. Like I said above, even Kolb has participated in training with Eagles players. And he is the biggest no brainer to get traded.

Well from the tweets
It sounds like everything went well and nobody got hurt. I’m glad they spent some time meeting and getting to know the playbook. Someone above asked how they would do this without the coaches, but these are professional athletes and have been looking at playbooks for a long time. I think they should be able to get a good idea of what is expected on each play. I wonder how many passes Cam and Emu threw, and how many times Emu threw it out of bounds when a cloud passed in front of the sun and he thought he was under pressure from the shadows.

Did ya'll hear the interview where Sidney Rice said he likes the direction that this team is headed?
He indicated that he wouldn’t mind coming back home..
Do you have a reliable link to that mangoes?
I saw it about 10 days ago, but the only source I can find is someone saying it on a yahoo answers page.
If you have a good link I’d like to see it. What was quoted seems plausible, but I’m not comfortable doing a writeup on it with that one source.
A couple of interesting notes from Person's article in the observer:
Gross and Wharton are covering the costs of the sessions, which include paying for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg County police officer
when asked why they’re not opening the workouts to the media:
"We want to focus on getting to know our teammates, the new guys. To focus without distractions. Not worry about completion percentages being taken note of or who was in shape, who wasn’t, (and) what guys were there and weren’t.
Interesting to see Matt Moore was among the 50 players present for the workouts:
Cam Newton, the No. 1 pick in April’s draft, was among the quarterbacks who participated in the workout. Matt Moore, Jimmy Clausen, Tony Pike and Keith Null also were there.
When Wharton was asked about Newton’s conditioning as well as the other rookies:
“He’s in shape. You can tell he’s worked hard and prepared – out on the field and in meetings,” Wharton said. “So that’s always good – as well as all our rookies. They did a great job. You can tell they’re still in shape.”
Apparently all the rookies except Fua, who is finishing his classes at Stanford, were in attendance:
Gross said the only rookie who missed the session was a player who was finishing his coursework.
But the Panthers’ safeties received some instruction from Eugene Robinson, a former NFL player who is a member of the Panthers’ broadcast team.

Thanks for the excerpts and the link to the article.
Good for all of those QBs being there. Even Null! LOL. Honestly, I was kind of hoping to see him play last season – just for the heck of it. Our QB situation couldn’t have gotten much more ridiculous.
I’m also excited to hear about all of the rookies (except the one in class) being there. I really wish someone could sneak into a tree and record some stuff. I’m dying to see Pilares and Hogan. Having the private session is kind of frustrating, because I want the dish on everything. But, actually, it’s probably for the best – the players will have fewer distractions, and opening sessions to the public so that they could criticize the QBs (particularly Newton/Clausen/Moore), the rookies, and question why certain players aren’t there and to speculate on why. I mean, it would put Gross in an awkward situation being pressed to say that Player X couldn’t be there on any given day because of some family situation or previously arranged engagement, but couldn’t say anything about Players Y and Z not being there, because in actuality they’re just tired of the Panthers and are biding their time until the Panthers trade them. It’s best for the team to be able to focus on their work with the players who are able and who want to be there, and to at least temporarily push the rest out of their minds.

your welcome!
I agree, the fan in me wants every little detail about these workouts, but I get why they’d want to keep them private. I’m sure Gross and Wharton understand the media buzz surrounding Cam and Smitty right now and how that might be a distraction from the learning and bonding experience of training with their teammates for some of the younger guys.
I do wish that they had at least hired a small video team and do something similar to those short videos with Mike Craft over on panthers.com and do a small edited version of the days activities. They could exclude any parts they felt may raise questions from the media. For us fans after sitting through 2-14 I don’t think that is too much to ask.
