Now before you totally crucify me, hear me out. Plaxico Burress is scheduled to be released from the upstate Oneida Correctional Facility on June 6. Plaxico Burress was once a really good receiver. And still has the potential to be one. Yes he shot himself in the leg and has been out of football for two years. Those are legitimate concerns. But with Front Office and new coaching staff taking chances on players such as Brandon Hogan, Jeremy Shockey, and Cam Newton. Character and the Panthers, while still important, may not hold as much value as it did. Especially when you are 2-14 and in the hardest division in the NFL.
Plaxico could be another boom or bust project. Yes he is 34 and probably out of football shape but the talent is still there. Since Plax hasn't played in two or so years he probably has a little more gas in the tank then guys that have gone through the grueling 16 game plus seasons at his age.
He would also give Cam Newton another veteran target. And the rookies and sophmore players would have another talented vet to go to for guidance. And he will be uber cheap! All Plaxico wants to do is rehab his image and play football. I think the two years in prison has taught him some valuable life lessons( don't drop the soap being one of them). This situation reminds me of Michael Vick. People thought the Eagles were crazy for taking a chance on Vick and now look at them. The guy was a Pro Bowler last season and outplayed Kevin Kolb out of Philly! If Smith leaves then you still have a decent receiver in Burress. I'd say mid-way through the season Plax would be in game shape and and have a solid grasp on Chud's offensive scheme.
Our coaching staff would probably work wonders with him and stretch out whatever football life is left in him. And we wouldn't have to worry about him getting in trouble because he will be on the straight and narrow just like Vick was. Sign him to a one year incentive laden deal and see how he does. This give the rookie receivers time to sit and learn Chud's system and gives Steve Smith a running partner the defense must account for. It could be a win-win deal for everyone. But would the Panthers pull the trigger? Sound off Panther fans! Would you take the risk of trying to acquire Plaxico Burress?
Be nice to see this in a Panthers uni on Sundays!
