ESPN's Todd McShay and Sporting News' Russ Lande have just updated their mock drafts to have Cam Newton #1 overall to the Carolina Panthers. This is consistent with everything we've heard over the last week (or month in the case of Darin Gantt) that the Panthers are basically sold on Newton at this point.
Unless this is all some elaborate ruse (and if it is then I tip my hat to the front office) then there could be an extremely awkward conversation due to take place between Newton and Jimmy Clausen about who wears #2. On the plus side though, if you bought a #2 jersey last year this person says you can remove the name with nail polish removed and some good old fashioned elbow grease!
McShay only unveiled his top 5 picks with his full mock coming out tomorrow, and while he reinforces that he believes Marcell Dareus would be the best pick for the Panthers, and Blaine Gabbert would be the best at QB- he acknowledges that everything he's heard is leaning towards the Panthers selecting Newton. You can see his video here.
Russ Lande speaks of how many people the Panthers would play the #1 pick safe, but recently they're hearing more and more the Panthers are willing to roll the dice on someone with high upside. You can read his mock here.
