Panthers Draft History Review - The First Bust
Bud Light asked that we run a series of posts leading up to the draft on our past gems and busts. Sounded like a good idea since we are really scrapping to find something to write about. For arguments sake I'm only going to consider picks in rounds 1 through 3 for draft busts. For draft gems we'll look at the better picks from all levels of the the draft.
Let's get this started with the first Panthers bust. So let's harken back to 1995, the Panthers inaugural draft. They had four picks in the first two rounds and amazingly two of them are still in the league:
1 (5) QB Kerry Collins - Collins lasted three seasons in Carolina before his off the field activities, when combined with 49 INTs against 38 TDs, was too much to bear. He left with approximately a 65 QB rating. Collins remains in the league and has had some notable seasons in 2000 with the Giants and 2008 with the Titans.
more after the jump...
1 (22) CB Tyrone Poole - Poole has 498 total tackles and 45 interceptions over his 15 yr career. He had 170 tackles for the Panthers and 5 INTs, missing only 1 start in three seasons. Poole was a quality starter but his lack of size made him a risk in man coverage.
1 (29) T Blake Brokermeyer - Made 58 starts in four seasons for the Panthers before leaving to continue what would be a 9 year career. I couldn't find anything written about why he left the Panthers but I was thinking he was injury prone. Yet he made 48 starts in 4 seasons, missing only 6 games in four seasons. He must have left for more money than the Panthers were willing to pay.
2 (36) Shawn King - 57 tackles and 8.5 sacks in 8 seasons says a lot. He was more know for his numerous suspensions for violating the drug test policy, missing the entire 1998 season for it.
So would you call any of these picks 'busts' Panther fans? If so, which would you call the first bust of the Panther organization. Take the poll:

As far as the Panthers are concerned
Collins busted pretty badly, especially considering how much success he was able to enjoy later in his career.
Romanowski busted Collins
Collins showed much potential until Bill broke his jaw…that hit was nasty I was sitting about 10 rows off the field right behind the Panthers bench. Collins was in lala land when he came off the field, and was never the same as a Panther, took him years to get over his pocket firght.
Tshimanga Biakabutuka aka Tim
8th Overall Pick, injured soo much, who would’ve know but he was a buuuussst… At least Kerry Collins led us to the NFC Championship in his 2nd season, pretty impressive if ya ask me, but heck, I was only 10 yrs. old back then, so what do i know..

He redefined game manager that season...
our defense (at the time, Capers’s 3-4 zone blitz scheme was new to the league) was simply NASTY that year, and we had a pretty good running game/great special teams. Of course, one year later and most of the league had figured out our defense lol

Yeah, Biakabatuka was the first name that popped into my mind.
Biakabatuka, Bust
Collins, semi-bust

So you are saying none of these guys drafted in 1995 were busts?
making Biaka, who was drafted in ’96, the first bust?
No, I was just saying Biakabatuka was a bigger bust than Collins, that's all

Sorry, Jaxon, I didn't see the 1995 stipulation...

Brockermeyer and Poole were good picks IMO (for their draft position anyways)
I’m surprised you left Timmy B off the list (even though he’s a pretty solid guy; his uncle owns a car shop near my house, and I met him there one day randomly awhile back while he was visiting it was so surreal)! Granted, when he was healthy he was a pretty solid back, but that damn foot could never stay in one piece…

Does Sean Gilbert classify as a 'bust'? Dude cost us two first round picks
Furthermore, there is definite credence to the idea that he cost us Peyton Manning because the Panthers didn’t have the firepower (pick wise) to move up in 1998.
Three 1st rounders in 98, 99, 00 would have been enough to get the #1, and by extension Manning
Or at the very least...
someone with more of an impact than Gilbert; We could’ve had Mcnabb in 1999 I believe if we had still owned that pick…
Nobody fucks with the Jesus! -Big Lebowski
I was going to write Sean Gilbert
But you beat me too it. Biggest draft “Bust” we ever made, until trading away picks for Everette Brown. I can’t believe the Panthers never learned from that.
Don't give up, don't ever give up ~ Jim Valvano
Brown's still in the 3 year range though...
Gilbert was named to the all decade team before he came to us, and then promptly turned mediocre
Nobody fucks with the Jesus! -Big Lebowski
Mediocre? That's way too nice.
He paved the way for guys like Haynesworth. His acquisition was the singlemost awful front office decision in Carolina Panthers history

It's too early for me to fully express my hatred of that move...
I’m not sure people appreciate what a difference hiring Hurney in 2001 made lol

+1

If we're going rounds 1-3, then you HAVE to include:
WR Dwayne Jarrett, University of Southern California
Ron Rivera, the Most Interesting Coach in the World. Stay thirsty my friends!
Colbert at least had a good rookie year.
Not that he was even very good, but I just think Jarrett should sit on that throne alone.

Rashard Anderson?
First round pick I believe, did he even play for us?

God I couldn't remember his name, so I didn't want to post and look like an idiot
What a waste. I’ve seen pop warner running backs who were better than he was at hitting the hole.
Don't give up, don't ever give up ~ Jim Valvano
I think he does.
To me, any player who doesn’t live up to potential is a bust, whether it’s because of on-field or off-field reasons. The only time I feel that the bust label doesn’t necessarily apply is if the player suffered a major injury, like Ki-Jana Carter. I mean, it’s not necessarily his fault he blew his knee out in the first pre-season game of his career.
But Rae Rae did himself in, and to me he is the biggest bust in franchise history.
One cries because one is sad. For example: I cry because others are stupid, and it makes me sad.
If not the biggest bust
at least the biggest embarrassment.

Steve Smith, Captain Munnerlyn, David Gettis all come to mind for Gems
Greg Hardy is a possible one but im not sure hes done enough yet to be call a gem. however he is a potential starter as a sixth round pick so throw him in there. I cant really think of anyone else unless we go with 1st round picks
I don't think you can be a "gem" unless you're picked in the 3rd or lower...
I mean…if you’re a first round pick, you’re supposed to be good.
One cries because one is sad. For example: I cry because others are stupid, and it makes me sad.
ya but steve smith was a 3rd round punt returner
who turned into one of the most feared wide recievers in the league. nobody expected that to happen. thats why i give him a gem

ok ok u win
can u think of any other gems though?
by pantherpride on Apr 5, 2011 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions
???
My comment was in response to this:
I cant really think of anyone else unless we go with 1st round picks
I was just saying that a 1st round pick (and even a 2nd round pick, IMO) can’t be a gem because they’re drafted early because they’re supposed to be good.

ok i jusy woke up and now i see what your saying.
my bad. i agree with you but i cant think of any other gems because a good portion of our starters have been 1st round picks

Mike Goodson could wind up being a real gem in the end
Also, Charles Johnson was picked in the third.
And how about Bruce Nelson for a bust?

charles johnson is a great one!
hes preformed very well over the last few years with a break out season last year. plus hes barrel chested so hes definite gem

Getting back to Jaxon's original post... which was solely 1995
I have to go with Shawn King for the biggest bust (even though I want to say Collins).
For a gem… I have to say Chad Cota in the 7th round of 1995. Any time you’re named to a team’s ‘All-Decade’ team and you were a 7th rounder you’re a gem. I loved the way Cota played
Fun fact:
Here are the number of players who were Panthers at one point in time in their career from the 1995 draft:
- Kerry Collins (1st round)
- Mark Fields (1st round)
- Tyrone Poole (1st round)
- Blake Brockermeyer (1st round)
- Shawn King (2nd round)
-Christian Fauria (2nd round)
- Todd Sauerbrun (2nd round)
- Melvin Tuten (3rd round)
- Jason Kyle (4th round)
- Frank Garcia (4th round)
- Andrew Peterson (5th round)
- Jerry Colquitt (6th round)
- Chad Cota (7th round)
- Michael Reed (7th round)
14 Carolina Panthers from one draft
Kyle still in the league too
That was the biggest surprise for me…was finding out that Ty Poole is still in the league…I think he was hurt for 2010 or he just left the league in 2010. But he was on the Titans 2009 roster.
Seriously?
I thought our Poole retired like 2005-2006 timeframe…is it definitely the same guy?
Nobody fucks with the Jesus! -Big Lebowski
Cota was all decade???
Damn…I knew he was good, but didn’t realize he got accolades for it lol We seem to have established a fairly good tradition of having solid Safeties
Nobody fucks with the Jesus! -Big Lebowski
I think he was a complete bust.
averaging some 1.2 sacks a season and less than 10 tackles while racking up numerous suspensions puts him at the top of the list for the class of 95 bust. That and he was drafted very high in the second round.

I always reference who I wanted the Panthers to take in that years draft
I was a big fan of the following players…
Tony Boselli
Warren Sapp
Ty Law
Bobby Taylor
Korey Stringer
Derrick Brooks
James Stewart (RB Miami) Yikes! I really whiffed on this one.
Ray Zellars I had a thing for oversized RB’s that year
Too bad Panthers fans :(
Damn Jags...
taking Boselli with the 2nd pick; oh well, at least we traded down from #1 (Poor Cincy…taking Ki-Jana #1 only to see him barely play because of injuries)
Nobody fucks with the Jesus! -Big Lebowski
i barely know most of these guys :'(
I was 3 months away from birth lol
