NFL draft open thread- Round 4 and beyond!

We're in to the final stretch! The Carolina Panthers have done a good job in recent drafts finding late round talent- from Captian Munnerlyn in 2009, to David Gettis in 2010- there have been examples of good players found late.

Look for Carolina to try and address needs at CB, WR and OL today- but don't rule out the possibility of more help on the DL.

This is now an open thread!

Does Marcus Cannon project as an NFL guard or tackle?

Because he looks like BPA. Would be ideal if he could backup an injury prone Otah

I think he projects as a guard. Could be a tackle, but would need to work on his footwork.

I think he’s easily BPA, and passing on him because of the non-Hodgkins lymphoma would be a mistake

Scouting reports say he can play both.

He played left and right tackle at TCU.

Hope we can get some good talent in the later rounds!

Hurney is awesome in the later rounds so I have no doubt we’ll be getting very talented players to fill needs and add much needed depth. I’ll be following the draft on Twitter though, as I’m about to head to Vegas and catch Carlos Santana at the Hard Rock Hotel. See you guys back here on Monday and I hope everyone has an awesome week-end!

by southtunnel on Apr 30, 2011 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Why do you say he will demand more money than makes sense for the Panthers to pay?

If he wants too much money it should be for any team not for our team. That goes along the lines of saying the Panthers are cheap and that is definitely not the case.

by MrBernz on Apr 30, 2011 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions

But how does your opinion equate to "we"?

Either he wants too much money for any team, or he doesnt. You cant say it like more than “we” are willing to pay since “we” are not known to be cheap, only to people that read sport pages that don’t cover the Panthers would say that.

I didnt mean yours in particular.

I just meant like, if the player is worth it, the Panthers will pay it. Saying he wants more than the Panthers want to pay is an opinion and makes the Panthers seem cheap when they arent. & no1 knows what the Panthers are willing to pay anyone. If a player is trying to ask for too much, just say he wants too much not that the Panthers arent willing to pay that much. Thats my opinion anyway.

by NX75649 on Apr 30, 2011 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree...

…there are several CB’s left on the board who are rated better. The only rationale I can see is that he’s got a physical, nasty side, defends the run pretty well, and better than average ball skills…which I see Rivera/McDermott coveting. But he’s not the fastest cover guy or has the best technique.

by Mr_Sticky on Apr 30, 2011 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Hogan is yet another example of a high school star on offense making the switch to the other side of the ball with aplomb. He was an All-Washington, D.C. Metro player as a quarterback for undefeated Manassas (passed for 2,536 yards, 32 TDs; rushed for 1,735 yards, 26 TDs) as a senior. Because of his lack of size, however, most colleges projected him as a defensive back – a move a bit slow in coming but very successful when it did.

Hogan actually began his career as a slot receiver, making 12 catches for 67 yards in 10 games (one start) as a freshman. But during preseason practices the following fall, his coaches noted how well he could backpedal and hit, so they convinced him to give the new spot a try.

It didn’t take Hogan long to make an impact on defense, as he started nine times in 12 games played in 2008, making 60 tackles, intercepting three passes and breaking up seven others. His game took another step forward in 2009, earning first-team All-Big East honors with 74 tackles, an interception and 11 pass breakups. Despite missing two games of his senior year due to suspension, Hogan was named second-team all-conference with 37 tackles, three interceptions and six pass breakups.

Hogan also showed elusiveness with the ball in his hands by returning seven punts for 85 yards as a junior and 12 for 93 yards last fall. Adding that special teams acumen (he could be a contributor on special teams coverage units) to his knowledge of routes from his experience on offense, speed and physicality makes Hogan a very promising prospect who is capable of starting at the next level. Two arrests within the past year, however, may raise some red flags among teams, dropping his stock.

I'm hoping those issues are more in line with being stuck out in Morgantown than his personality lol

I think Mayock said it best: “If they’ve got faith that the locker room will keep him in line, he can be much better than a 4th round talent…”

On Hogan:
Strengths: Prototypical heady zone corner who attacks plays in front of him, allowing few yards after the catch. Quickly gets off his initial coverage to pick up short outs, but is still capable of going back to help his safety on deep outs. Does not give back down from any challenge on the outside. Quick, smooth backpedal, keeps some cushion between him and receiver until the route unveils itself. Watches for double moves and has the speed to stay with them. Aggressive in run support, reads and beats receiver blocks and flows downhill to the ball. Delivers a big enough hit to dislodge the ball from receivers if they have not yet secured the catch. Will undercut throws to intercept them if the quarterback does not look him off or is not on the money in tight quarters. Looks to make things happen after the interception, elusive runner in space. Very strong tackler for his size, will bring down big receivers by wrapping and churning his legs, not just chopping them down (though he’s very effective as a cut tackler). Instinctual player willing to work on his game on the field and in the film room. Good punt return skills: owns solid hands, makes first defender miss with a quick move and can get the corner. Played through biceps injury most of 2010.

Weaknesses: Loses discipline at times, biting hard and taking direct angles to the ball without regard to his assignment on the play. His lack of height will hurt him downfield at the next level. Gets beat for big plays when trying to bait the quarterback downfield or sitting on short routes. Lacks great strength and height to outmuscle NFL receivers for the ball in the air. Great speed to recover if beaten, but over-aggressiveness and lack of size sometimes make it difficult to get back to his man in time to prevent a big play. Dances and runs backward too often on punt returns.

Hey, I'm behind our team...

BUT I"M NOT A BLIND FOLLOWER. I am fine with these picks, but as a person who loves the draft, I wouldn’t have made some of these choices, I would’ve done something else. I will like these guys when they hit the field, heck I don’t have a choice! But doesn’t mean I have to think that it was the greatest decision in the world when we made a draft pick.

by jkp1516 on Apr 30, 2011 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions

True statement

But it was the scrub thing that got me. Just reminded me of when we picked Cam and people wanted to slam us. I too am a lover of the draft so no harm no foul if that wasn’t your intention

I’ve been thinking about the whole Jimmy/Cam competition thing and think that Cam should easily beat him out though. Being as how it’s a whole new playbook and coaching staff it really doesn’t give Jimmy too much of a head start.

I heard RR say

he will only put Cam on the field once he feels he is ready.

We didn't lose the game; we just ran out of time. ~ Vince Lombardi

by ThePanthers! on Apr 30, 2011 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

He did say that...

He also said both QB’s will have the opportunity to compete for the job. I’m just saying at this point with our QB roster and the teams situation I think Cam could very possibly win the job right away if he is as hard of a worker as he claims to be.

Hopefully they get things worked out business wise so we can see this stuff go down.

by MindMachine on Apr 30, 2011 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh definitely.

Im not some of the guys who just want Cam to start. I don’t care at all, as long as the starting QB gives us the best chance. If that’s Clausen, great. Newton, cool. Pike, Next year’ll be long.

We didn't lose the game; we just ran out of time. ~ Vince Lombardi

by ThePanthers! on Apr 30, 2011 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree as well

It just seems given the situation it could be a perfect situation to mold the offense around Cam, given at this point every QB on our roster is basically at the same place and Cam was drafted to be our future.

If we bring in a vet then that is a good idea as well, but at this point it could be just as likely that we let our current guys battle it out.

by MindMachine on Apr 30, 2011 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Right.

I think the Air Coryell offense fits him pretty well though so I’m happy with it. Clausen seems to be a little out of place in this offense though…

by ThePanthers! on Apr 30, 2011 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Cam has never had to read a defense

and has never played in the nfl speed. That is where Clausen should have the advantage. Clausen has a full year of nfl style practice and real play time under his belt. If he doesn’t beat Cam for the starter position i think he can be considered a bust.

by MrBernz on Apr 30, 2011 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

You mean he's not already considered one?

Kidding. I think Newton will be able to diagnose more than he’s being given credit for. Jimmy would have to perform like Peyton Manning to beat out Cam. I don’t see it happening. We’d be more successful running the single wing with Newton than anything with Pickles.

I didn't say Clausen was great at it.

I said he had real nfl experience with real nfl speed. If you don’t think that should be accounted for then i don’t know what to say. I am not a Clausen fan, I am just saying he should be far ahead of Newton right now, & if he isn’t then he is a bust in my eyes.

by MrBernz on Apr 30, 2011 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

It's all good man

Your point is entirely valid. I was joking with the above comment.

I just think Cam will beat Jimmy. I would love for Jimmy to redeem himself and be in a Brees/Rivers situation. I am just not holding my breath on it.

by MindMachine on Apr 30, 2011 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that trying to evaluate the two against each other is impossible.

Like comparing lemons and birthday cake. They are too different. Each will have strengths and weaknesses but Cam is SO much bigger , stronger, and SO much more athletic that Jimmy will always pale in the overall comparison.

Thats my thoughts too...

Jimmy is going to need to be much more impressive than Cam to win the job. If they are even head to head, Cam gets the job.

by MindMachine on Apr 30, 2011 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I think if theyre head to head

Clausen should start. Let Newton sit until he clearly beats Clausen. I mean, if he isn’t better than Clausen why risk him early?

I am all for letting a player learn on the job, as long as he has the basics down already.

by MrBernz on Apr 30, 2011 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I totally agree

He wasn’t great at all. The logic of experience actually points out that Clausen doesn’t have the tools to be productive, we all saw that last year.

His lack of athletic ability didn’t allow him to overcome the game at the next level.

Jimmy had every advantage coming out of college that Cam is being bashed for and yet it still resulted in a poor performance.

I do believe that given one more year he will be able to figure things out. Unlike others I think that Cam will bring the best out of Jimmy. Keep them both!

A change in philosophy

I have been torn for the last several weeks as I read many of the post here on CSR. As I flip and flop with many valid points that my fellow panthers fans make, one common thread comes to bare. We are going to be a New kind of Panthers team that attacks from when the first blow of the whistle to the end of the last when only the echo can be heard.

I ‘m on board with the consensus that we are taking more chances this year with high risk players. IMHO, we have in place this year that’s different than in the years past is a coaching staff designed to teach a TEAM of young players how to play at the next level.

My calendar is marked for 9 OCT when we host New Orleans. (as long as we start the season on time!)

It’s going to be a wakeup call for our division!

by MindMachine on Apr 30, 2011 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, to be fair...

“Bend but don’t break” was more of a Meek’s philosophy; Del Rio and Fox had us becoming one of the most aggressive defense’s in the league, and unfortunately Trgovac wasn’t able to really carry the Del Rio strategy over (he was OK as a coordinator, just wasn’t creative enough). I still hate the fact that Del Rio was snatched up after only one season…

Conspiracy time: Cleveland is killing two birds with one stone...

1) Building their running game to be nothing but bruisers running up and over people, thus helping McCoy out (he looked terrible when Hillis started getting stuffed later in the season)
2) What screams “Blue collar” more than anything else in football right now? If you answered “Two giant white guys filling both RB positions in the backfield”, you’re on the right track; Cleveland is a city that needs “local heroes” to rally behind (especially since Lebron left), and what better way than to appeal to the “blue collar” base that makes up most of their fanbase?

5 receptions, 176 yards, 3 TDs against USC in the first game of the season

by James Dator on Apr 30, 2011 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Strengths: Great quickness, accelerates well off the line as a slot receiver. Changes directions well. Gets into and out of his sharp routes quickly, uses stutter steps to create separation. Finds soft spots in the defense. Superb run after catch abilities; turns short passes into long gains with very good balance, acceleration and vision. Breaks tackles using both agility and a stiff arm. Executes screen passes well, wiggles his way through the defense for extra yardage. Very effective on quick slants. Willing blocker downfield, squares up and is patient enough to sustain.

Weaknesses: Drops too many catchable passes, tends to body catch. Only a valuable asset in the quick passing game and does not have the size or receiving ability to make many plays down the field. Not a physical receiver, uncomfortable trying to make catches in traffic and prefers to separate using speed alone. Struggles to adjust to errant passes in any direction. Does not have good snap awareness and is occasionally late off the ball.

Pilares tore his PCL in the Hawaii Bowl and must first demonstrate that he is healthy. If he recovers from his injury, he can be an effective slot receiver. He has great foot speed and regularly separates from linebackers and defensive backs on crossing and drag routes. He also finds soft spots in zone coverage and is very difficult to tackle in the open field after the catch. He lacks the speed to stretch the field, but this converted running back is shifty enough to move the chains. Pilares will be a late round pick if his rehabilitation is successful.

Pilares made a name for himself as one of college football’s most dangerous offensive weapons in one of the nation’s most prolific offenses. Playing both running back and slot receiver during his career at Hawaii, Pilares was incredibly productive this past season, finishing seventh in the nation in receiving yards and third in touchdowns (for the nation’s sixth-ranked offense).

As a freshman running back, Pilares led the team in rushing with 388 yards on 68 carries and three touchdowns while catching 26 passes for 249 yards and a score. He rushed the ball 56 times as a sophomore for 300 yards and five touchdowns, adding 29-246-2 receiving. He moved to receiver as a junior and totaled 66 receptions for 690 yards and four touchdowns. He broke out as a senior, earning second-team All-WAC honors after hauling in 88 passes for 1,306 yards and 15 touchdowns.

While Pilares is explosive, he is an undersized one-dimensional threat with inconsistent hands who offers little value to make plays down the field in tight coverage. Pilares may not get drafted early, but his likeness to former Hawaii and current Miami Dolphins pass-catcher Davone Bess and versatility as a slot receiver, runner and return man could earn him a Saturday slot.

I'm interested to see what we could do creatively with some of our guys...

We have one receiver who is a QB and one receiver who is a running back as well as a QB that can run like a running back.

Hopefully we will see some crazy reverse and wildcat type of plays this year. I seen a highlight of Cam Newton catching a touchdown pass too!

by MindMachine on Apr 30, 2011 2:00 PM EDT reply actions

Not necessarily by passing the ball, but with the option. That would look awesome.

by Ol' Uncle Munnerlyn on Apr 30, 2011 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

The amount of playmakers we could have in the backfield at one time is intriguing

I’ve seen some of the highlights of Cam handing the ball off and then faking a run himself too, that could be benefitial to our our RB’s too.

Basically, he just needs to be accounted for on every play as a runner as well.

by MindMachine on Apr 30, 2011 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I suspect a lot of teams are going to dedicate an LB to spy on Cam...

Good point about his growth...he's still learning the position, having only played it 2 years

He has decent speed, is shifty in the open field, appears to be great at the slant and drag patterns (and fearless over the middle)…all of which could open him up for surprise post patterns if the defense gets lulled into expecting the underneath stuff. And I think he can be taught to catch the ball with his hands out in front of him, which should reduce his drops in time.

I’m not excited about the pick (who gets excited after the 4th round anyway?), but I think it’s a decent pick.

by Mr_Sticky on Apr 30, 2011 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Considering how much LaFell's hands improved over the course of last season...

That’s not a huge concern for me as far as Pilaras. Smith’s recent increase in drops worries me because it seems to indicate a decline from a peak – and I can’t help but wonder if it’s related to the broken arms in the past and the fact that his arms are full of steel instead of bone now.

WIld draft for the Panthers so far

Not how i expected it OR would have done it myself. Definite change in philosophy from the Fox era!

A bunch of reaches is my first impression….scary.

I hope going forward from here the team will, in this order:

1) Get some OL depth.
2) Bring in a veteran QB
3) Get good return on trades for (Smith and) Clausen while we can.

We went Cam Newton (i would have taken Dareus and then Mallet in the 3rd but oh well. .. Mallet will be the next Brady up in NE!), so we should part ways with Clausen asap – get something for him while he’s still young and not a complete bust.

Since we’re obviously going in some completely new direction, i ’d love to see the team bring in McNabb to tutor/compete with Newton. A (used to be) mobile QB that could play right away and hopefully help develop our new franchise stud.

Additionally, If they are giving up on Edwards as a WR (drafting Pilares?) then i’d like to see Edwards either traded or used in the back field. Fox may have ruined his career here in Carolina with his lame-duck, half-assed, bs coaching job last season.

This from NFL.com
Ziemba, fresh off a BCS National Championship with Auburn, has a chance to become a solid starting right tackle at the next level. Has a ton of starts on his resume including many against top competition. He possesses excellent size and good mobility for a big man. Despite all his starting experience, he could still benefit from tightening up his technique as both a pass and run blocker. Flashes the foot speed and quickness the teams covet but still needs to do a better job protecting the quarterback and blocking out in space. Ziemba’s a talented, battled-tested prospect who should be selected in the third round-range.

I'm really not sure what to make of the draft so far.

I’m really kind of upset that we didn’t go for Cannon when he was available for such a long time. Hogan and PIlaras weren’t close to being on my radar, so I’ll have to spend some time on Youtube tonight. At first glance, I can kind of see some value in the two, but I’m cautious.

Cam, I’m cautious on. If the guy lives up to his potential, I’ll be absolutely thrilled. Physically, he reminds me so much of Josh Freeman.

I am quite happy with the McClain and Fua picks, though.

by jamiedk on Apr 30, 2011 2:38 PM EDT reply actions

I should say...

That the Hogan and Pilaras picks may have to do with some versatility that they offer given the past positions that they’ve played.

The team may think that they have some value as special teamers. I suspect Rivera’s thinking a lot about special teams – considering that’s what drug down San Diego. When you have the #1 overal offense and #1 overall defense, you have to look at special teams.

http://fantasyfootballmetrics.com/Player_News/2011/NFL%20Draft/Draft_2011_Pilares_4-19-11_1.0.htm

Pilares is our #2 “small WR” overall, and if I was forced to combine our “big” and “small” WR lists together, I would say Pilares would be around our #5-7 overall WR. Pilares also rates as a potential elite NFL WR based historically in our system, which makes him a potentially huge steal for some team in this Draft.

by TS BOBCAT on Apr 30, 2011 3:04 PM EDT reply actions

Actually Edwards did good at KR the few times he got the opportunity.

Edwards could have much more of an impact last year if Fox had not (in my mind) intentionally sabotaged him. Fox never liked the pick and did all he could do to undermine it.

The fe times AE got on the field Fox kept using him in places where he did not excel like PR. Edwards was obviously much better at KR then PR yet only got 1 chance all preseason.

I have to correct you here, because i have heard so many say similar things that are not entirely accurate.

by dudemanhey on Apr 30, 2011 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

it's not inaccurate

Are you saying AE did bad at KR? You have no evidence of that outside of him not getting the chance. And it’s obvious Fox’s coaching job last season was the worst in the NFL.

by dudemanhey on Apr 30, 2011 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Where did I say he was bad as a KR?

As a “returner” in general he was way too sketchy to be relied upon. And your one example as a KR doesn’t suggest otherwise.

stay thirsty my friends

by southtunnel on Apr 30, 2011 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

haha. About four posts above!

JBeason53 said, “he could still be a KR or PR .” You replied, “lol, did you see him return last year?”

My example certainly does suggest AE could be a decent KR if given the chance. He did well at KR in very limited action. That suggests that with more opportunities, he could be a good option there.

My point was that i am confident that Fox did all he could last year to not play him or make him look in bad a light as possible intentionally; and it obviously has worked because all anybody seems to remember of him from last season is two muffed punts.

(I feel similarly about the whole team actually. Fox tanked it and tried to blame the Carolina FO for not having the right tools. Really he just refused to use them correctly.)

by dudemanhey on Apr 30, 2011 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I fear he may never get a fair shot in Carolina.

Last season was his audition, and he didn’t excel. It didn’t help that he was playing for a coaching staff that refused to use him.

Last season’s failures were also a perfect time to give Armanti a chance to be a QB, or at least a wildcat option type QB. Now the team has drafted a bigger, less refined passer version of him to be the “face of the franchise” for the Panthers. I don’t invision Edwards

It only makes Fox’s departure that more welcomed and overdue in retrospect.

by dudemanhey on Apr 30, 2011 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't worry about AE

Rivera has already said that he and Chud are envisioning AE as a Josh Cribbs-type of player. I think this year, he’ll have a legitimate shot at seeing the field.

by southtunnel on Apr 30, 2011 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

"worst in the NFL"

That’s debatable, but I very much see and understand your point. Fox is a system coach (just like people talk about system QB’s), which means he isn’t all that adaptable. I think he was taken far out of his comfort zone with the moves the FO made…and granted, he didn’t respond as well as he could have.

I don’t think Fox has ever been a “teaching coach,” but I think he does well with experienced players who already have an understanding of the pro game (think Phil Jackson). So much like we’ve talked about several Panthers last year not being put in a position to succeed, I think the same could be said of John Fox.

Ignoring emotional preferences and personal opinions, the job of everyone on an NFL team, from the FO on down to the practice squad, is to put everyone in the organization in a position to succeed. And the Panthers as an organization just didn’t do that during the 2010 season. But a new coaching staff, new players, existing players with a year more experience, and a different perspective from the FO brings hope that this will change in the coming year/s.

by Mr_Sticky on Apr 30, 2011 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

We had the worst record in the NFL and i would argue NOT the worst roster.

I say that makes Fox’s coaching job last year easily the worst in the league.

The 4th and 5th round picks are both guys who have switched positions so they could still have a much higher ceiling than we think and if their not worried about our offensive line then I will try not to as well

I noticed last year that our sub at WLB when Davis/Beason weren’t over there didn’t seem to get it done. If Davis goes down we really don’t have much on that side of the line.

Thomas Davis is a bigger priority

And they want to get him, Beason and Connor on the field as much as possible.

Per Steve Reed…

Anderson, who had a breakout year in 2010, is a guy the team would like to have back, but it’s unlikely they’re going to overpay for a strong side linebacker since they’re generally not that difficult to find in the free agent market and the team has so many other pressing needs.

From Steve Reed:
It’s easy to see what the Carolina Panthers like about sixth-round draft pick Lawrence Wilson, a linebacker from Connecticut.
All you have to do is take a look at his productivity.
Wilson started 51 games for UConn during his college career and three times posted 100-plus tackle seasons. He finished with 449 tackles, which ranks second in school history and fourth in Big East annals.
Considered a ballhawk on defense, Wilson forced and recovered six fumbles and had 9.5 career sacks along with five interceptions, most of those coming as a weak side linebacker.
Wilson has also played middle linebacker, but said "I would say weak side is my strength due to my athletic ability and speed."
However, that position is currently occupied by Thomas Davis, although he’s an unrestricted free agent.
Wilson said he will volunteer to do whatever he can just to get on the football field.
"Whatever they need of me to do, whether it’s going out and playing special teams or coming in on third downs I’m willing to do," Wilson said.
A native of Tuscaloosa, Wilson said his family missed the brunt of the tornadoes that thrashed the area earlier this week. Still, he said being down there at the time and living through the storm was "scary."

Tyrod is a better pocket QB at this stage in his development; and although he’s athletic, he doesn’t have the raw, electric athleticism Vick did coming out of college. I don’t think he’ll ever be anything more than a capable, athletic backup in the NFL.

I agree in on one point:

he will never be the deep threat Smitty was. But that’s not his specialty…he’s a dump off/drag/slant receiver who can jump to the ball and break free from tackling. And if we utilize him as such, I think we can lure defensive backs into crowding him at the LOS, and then turn him loose for a skinny post. I’ll take him one-on-one versus a Safety with a deep pass…but not so much against a pro caliber CB on the outside.

This conversation reminds me of one I had with my old band… you want to talk about stupid conversations get in a room with 4-5 drunk band dudes.

We once had a long discussion about the “piss olympics” which is essentially a competition where you must be urinating during the event… like pole vault being judged by arc of the stream!

hahaha, just a conversation, we didn’t do it.

What was with the Eagles and Patriots swapping the 193 and 194 picks???

At this point I think the Patriots are just mocking the rest of us. They have so many picks they don’t even need that they’re just playing games.

by southtunnel on Apr 30, 2011 4:50 PM EDT reply actions

Did they swap for any other picks?

They were probably just trying to keep the streak alive. I think those two teams have traded for the last 9 years.

Overall I think this is a pretty solid draft so far guys.

Those that are worried about our starting o-line have to remember that it is practically the same line that started the 2008 season, aside from Keydrick Vincent and he was fairly mediocre. I think Schwartz has pretty much locked down the RG spot, he was actually very good last year and was a real steal back in the 6th round(?) in 2008. If Otah can come back healthy this line can return to dominance, particularly in the run game. But it is still essential to find some depth behind those guys and I don’t think Bernadeau should be sticking around much longer if his 2010 performance was anything to go by.

by jojoisthemann on Apr 30, 2011 5:05 PM EDT reply actions

lot of people want a new RG.

I think Schwartz is pretty good. And depth at G could be pretty good if Duke Robinson has actually gotten his act together.

Don't get me wrong.. I agree with you.

That was definitely a need pick

Having a C/G will definitely add to our flexibility and depth on O-line

by pancanbra on Apr 30, 2011 5:10 PM EDT reply actions

Another upside pick for the Panthers

Williams is raw, but he’s a damn sight better than Bernadeau snapping the ball.

In the end, this deep in the draft the names you recognize are those who have significant issues for a reason. It’s these picks, like Williams that may not excite, may not raise the needle… but end up having more solid careers.

Man, it sucks that there'll be no UDFA right after the draft due to the lockout...

Because there are going to be A LOT of quality guys that perhaps should’ve gone in the draft. Romeus, Martin Parker, Lawrence Guy, Ian Williams, Brandon Bair, Cliff Matthews, Jeremy Beal, Pierre Allen, Herzlich, Burney, Lefeged, McDaniel, Will Hill, Deunta, Jarrard Tarrant, Jerron Johnson, Lockette, Toliver, Binns, Gurley, Pianalto, Saunders, Locke, Darren Evans, Pat Devlin, Stanley Havili, Dimarco, Ziemba, Willie Smith, Byron Bell, Linnenkohl, O’Dowd….

I mean JC if some of these guys don’t go with these final compensatory picks, there’ll be a ton of good UDFA players with a ton of potential. Wow.
