Panthers Select DT Terrell McClain in 2nd Round
With the 65th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft the Panthers selected DT Terrell McClain from South Florida. Here's ome links to his scouting reports:
McClain is a very disruptive run defender that should be able to contribute immediately in a defensive line rotation. He gets off the ball quickly and has the foot speed to penetrate gaps on stunts. He also has fast strong hands to engage and disengage in an instant to get in running lanes and after the quarterback. He is not an experienced pass rusher at this point, but he has the potential to improve due to his quick feet and hands. McClain brings it on every down and he should not last past the second round

If you felt that DT was a need the Panthers filled it. I have to trust he was the Panthers BPA at this point as that is usually Hurney's MO.
So how do you grade this pick Panther fans?

Good solid pick to improve the D-line
I am wondering if they will think D-line again or address a need on offense.

I am 2 for 2!!!!!!!!!!
See my last draft…… 7 ROUND PANTHER MOCK DRAFT FROM A DRAFT JUNKIE, FINAL VERSION
I guess he has the talent to be a starter
Doubt he will ever be a good pass rusher but a good run stopper. Still hoping for Drake Nevis or Luke Stocker with the next pick. We will definatley get another DT somewhere in this draft.
He's a beast...
He played against SC this year and after the 1st quarter I was asking about him. He’s a beast. Watching him play an entire game is really impressive…neblett, fua, mclain…now we’re talking
So he meets a major need, and was projected a round higher
Sounds like a great pick. Anyone got a knock on this guy?
stay thirsty my friends
Seriously quick feet
Check out his combine workout. He’s very quick and flexible. It’s hard to believe this kid is 300 lbs.
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-combine/09000d5d81eb8c69/2011-combine-workout-Terrell-McClain
I voted B
It’s a good pick, but I think Jurrell Casey would have been a little better. Still think we take Sione Fua with the comp pick.

Opposite,,,,
McClain will deliver penetration. Quick-Twitch athlete that squats 600 pounds (explosive!) and has fast hands. Fua is the former wrestler that delivers leverage.
Wow
sure he is not a fullback or something. He is quick for a big man..
"I see myself not only as a football player, but an entertainer and icon."
he was the dominant d-lineman on the team
so he got double teamed a lot. and rumors are he was out of shape. those numbers will change hopefully
Agreed
I am praying for Ellis, f-ing Dead Skins took J. Jenkins bunch of pricks. That is okay umm who is the starting QB again in Washington ? LOL
Honestly we could just take a CB today and then come back tomorrow with the first pick in the 4th and pickup Ellis or Fua.
Still I believe the Jets will pull the trigger on Ellis at #94 but Fua would be a nice pickup I would rather have Ellis however.
Who knows still I like this draft McClain is great DT with alot of upside and just b.c. he didn’t have 7 or 8 sacks people wanna downgrade him. He has alot to learn but I just hated the way Gruden bashed him about his weight and being out of shape.
Hey Chucky (Gruden) get a damn hair cut LOL.

Oh I forgot Weslye Saunders would be cool too
I hear a lot of people talking about Julius Thomas and I dont know much about him besides he is a decent basketball player. Can someone tell me about his game?
Thomas
He is a former B-Ball player we a very high ceiling, just depends if Chud see a potiental A. Gates type player in him. Saints drafted a former B-ball player and it turned out pretty well for them.
W. Saunders would be another opt as well, but not at the top of the fifth round perhaps in the top of the sixth maybe.

Our o-line is decent...
so we are better off picking up some developmental lineman late in the game: 6th round Willie Smith or Byron Stingily, or 6s Byron Bell all come to mind. The other thought is that we pull the trigger on Bolling at the top of 4 tomorrow. I would rather we take Davon House or a playmaker such as RB Taiwan Jones or WR Tandon Doss or Edmond Gates.

We still have the rights to W. Wright who we were so high on for special teams play and to potientally be a slot receiver due to his great training camp and pre season but it ended with a season ending injury before he showed what he could do.

Either Stocker, Thomas, or Saunders would be good for us
If he had someone else besides Crompton passing to him for most of his college career...
he would’ve posted way better stats; Stocker is a legit TE…he’s basically WItten 2.0 (but more agile; you’d be surprised how often he gets open on routes)!

Fua
Honestly, picking Fua at the bottom of 3 was a probably a little premature, even though I think the kid has great potential. With a little more focus in the weightroom on his lower body power, he will be the complete player. His arm length and hands are fantastic. Character is ideal. “struggles with the double team. not sudden or explosive” … nonetheless, very coachable.

I know it's not very nice, but I give this pick an F, ABSOLUTE F. F for FAIL.
At 65, there were much much much better value and players available. There’s a long list of players available at 65 who I would’ve chosen before T. McClain. Now, I understand that he has been rising up boards lately, but I just haven’t seen the production in him to warrant this pick this high. I understand he is athletic, has quick feet, is strong, and a lot of upside, however I worry that his lack of production is a major red flag. This guy was rated by my 5 draft magazines that I have in hand as 5th round. I just don’t see the value here.
It seems to me like the Panthers had him in here for a workout right before the draft and settled on choosing him before the draft, rather than just going with the flow. I dislike that, that’s what gave us AE, and I think settling on choices and ignoring BPA and value during the draft is a mistake. And that’s what I think we did here.
I’m not going to hail every pick we make. I’m not that kind of a fan. Very very very devoted and loyal, but I don’t like every move. This is one of them. I wouldn’t have done this. However, I’m going to read more about him and watch some more tape and I’m sure that I’ll come to like him more and more. Just didn’t think he commanded the value here. If he shows up in games, I’m really going to like him, but he’s got a lot to prove for me.

OMG a laundry list of players...Where do I start?
Kenrick Ellis, Drake Nevis, Allen Bailey, Leonard Hankerson, Demarcus Van Dyke, Vincent Brown, Johnny Patrick, Will Rackley…
Good draft so far...
I’m looking at CB, OL, and perhaps TE and RB tommorrow. I wouldn’t mind Quan Sturdivant with 98 though. Played ILB at UNC, but is fast enough to play OLB in the league. Would be very nice insurance with TD coming back from injury…or maybe it’s just my blue blood coming up to the surface…I like McClain and Fua, but I thought we could have gotten them a bit later (McClain at 97 and Fua at 98 or maybe even 132). That being said, I am a big believer in taking the guy you like, who cares when and where as long as you land the guy that you want, that’s all that matters in the end…
I just graduated from UNC and love Quan..
But don’t want him until he lasts late. He isn’t the fastest or nimblest. Not sure he can play the outside in a 43. Not sure he’s athletic enough. Best fit might be inside in 34.
I don't think Quan was ever healthy this past season
He looked quite a bit faster in previous years IMO…
Booo, I say Kris Durham
A 6’5" dude who runs 4.43 and had nearly as good as production as AJ Green though missing games. That’s the guy I want later.
I like what we've done so far...
McClain followed by Fua addresses a major need at DT for us. Rivera is stacking the line and developing a decent rotation among the big guys beyond anything we had in the past. McClain gives you pass rush, agility, speed, and the ability to shed blockers. Fua can be stout in holding his ground on running plays. This is exactly what we need. I don’t know if they’re both Day One starters, but they should certainly contribute to a MUCH better line rotation.
Looking forward to tomorrow, I see three players I’d like to see us target with the first pick in the 4th round. I’d be happy with any of them…
WR – Tandon Doss, Indiana University – This guy can project to be a starting WR, not just an extra slot receiver. He’s got size and speed and he’s a good route runner. Yes, I realize taking another WR at this point might invalidate the Armanti Edwards experiment. But, I actually view it as hedging our bets against the departure of Steve Smith. We need a guy who’s got starter position as a WR1. And Doss is the one guy on the board who could provide that.
OL – Marcus Cannon, TCU - This guy is big stout AND athletic. He can play RG or RT for us and he’s got the strength to push defenders around once he gets his hands on them. He’s also got enough size that pass rushers won’t just be able to bull rush him. He’ll just need to work on quickly recognizing stunts and overload blitzes so he can react and buy his QB time.
CB – Brandon Burton, Utah - This guy could develop into a starting corner to replace Richard Marshall and he could also help on special teams (maybe as a gunner). He’s best in press coverage, jamming receivers at the line…and he’s got decent closing speed on people in zone coverage. He’s also cited as having good potential as an eventual tackler in run support.
Any of these three would be good picks in my book. Each of them are decent players at their positions and they all play positions of need for us. Others might champion taking a TE in the 4th round. I have a feeling we can still get one of those in the 5th instead. And, despite Rivera’s decision to pursue a TE that “can do it all,” I still think Shockey covers us for this year and Barnidge/Rosario/King can back him up. Even if we don’t draft a TE this year, we’ve got next year’s draft to find someone again. Or, who knows? Maybe we can sign a free agent like Shockey again. For now, I think WR, OL, and CB are bigger needs. And we’ve got until tomorrow for our front office to research everyone who’s still on the board so they can take the “right” guy to address our needs.
But that’s just my two cents,
—Neil
I think Davon House will be our 1st pick tomm.
Cannon would already be off the board, but he is battling some form of lymphoma I think…Thought I heard McShay say that he didn’t see Doss drop ANY passes over the last 2 seasons, could be worth a look for sure…
+1
Haven’t heard anything about us meeting with Cannon. We met with House earlier this month. He’s good value here, and I think we’ll go CB because that’s our next biggest hole. Seems like a Panther guy too. I would bet Davon House is our pick tomorrow also.
Props to Russ Lande of Sporting News here...
He had us taking Terrell McClain at 65. That’s a smart dude! He’s much more Nostradamus than those idiots Kiper or McShay!
Sideline Scouting also had us going with T McClain...
But they had us taking him at 97 not 65. Still very wise mock!
Great vid via youtube
Hey guys great youtube vid created by a Pats fan of all things comparing M. Austin and T. McClain at the combine, check it out basically McClain has a bigger motor, carries his weight better, played last season in college and doesn’t have the baggage that Austin carries.

D.J. Williams?
Was he drafted by anyone i did not see any news when I googled him this morning. I think he would be a great choice, he is not the fgreatest blocker on the planet but he can stretch the field and has great hands. I think we should get him if he is available. Anyone agree?
by RazorbackBrave80 on Apr 30, 2011 7:02 AM EDT reply actions
You know, I just can't decide how I feel about DJ Williams...
On one hand, he’s had great production albeit in a pass happy offense with a dyno-mite QB. He also might be a good deep threat TE, and proved at the Senior Bowl that, although diminutive in size, he is actually a solid blocker. But on the other hand, most of his plays were on shorter underneath routes. He also doesn’t have the size I want and that’s a big deal to me when looking at TEs. I can sacrifice size in other areas, but in TEs, that’s a big deal to me, I like a big muscular dude who can get downfield a la Shockey. Also he isn’t that elusive, and I think he’ll be relegated more to an H-back role, which I don’t think we’ll have much use for.
On one hand, I like him, but overall I really don’t think he’ll add much to this offense. And being that we have a pretty crowded backfield at TE right now, I’m fine passing on him to shore up other holes and look for a TE next year early.
Guys left I would love to see us take:
1. Joh Moffitt
2. Luke Stocker
3. Greg Salas
4. Edmond Gates
5. Lawrence Wilson
6. Mario Harvey
7. Greg Jones
8. Davon House
9. Brandon Burton
10. Jeron Johnson
11. Chris L. Rucker
12. Alex Henery
If we could get 2-3 of these players, this would be one of the best drafts in our history.
Coach Rivera, may we please have one of these FA Nnamdi Asomugha or Jonathan Joseph
McClain stays lower
When they show them together look at how low McClain stays and really good hip rotation. He looks better to me. Like the pick
"I see myself not only as a football player, but an entertainer and icon."
It's simple...
For me, the guy just has to produce to make me like him. He hasn’t yet, and he’s got a lot to prove. He’s got to produce, otherwise I dislike the pick.
