2011 NFL Draft 1st Round Not Without Surprises

Stay connected for news and updates

The first round of the draft we just witnessed was not without its surprises. As I wind down on this night I thought I would throw up (pun intended) the three biggest surprises of the draft.

Biggest Surprise - We had heard the rumor the Falcons wanted to trade up high enough to get AJ Green. When they instead got Julio Jones at #6 I was surprised that they seemed to pay the same as if Green was there. Jones could very well out perform Green in the long run but the early consensus is that the Falcons gave up too much. Five picks in all were given to move up from #27 to #6. Two 1st rounders, this years second and two 4ths.

A Close Second - The Titans taking QB Jake Locker over QB Blaine Gabbert at #8 was a big surprise for me. Locker is an exceptional athlete but the fact is UW moved to a option type offense his senior year. Maybe that wasn't his fault but you would think a top 10 QB in the NFL would be given the opportunity to win throwing the ball.

Though many question the Vikings taking QB Christian Ponder at #12 I think that was a good pick for them.

My third biggest surprise was seeing CB Prince Amukamara fall to the Giants at #19. Just incredible value for the G-Men.

So who thinks there was a bigger surprise?
