Mel Kiper Issues Final Mock Draft Update for 2011 NFL Draft
Mel Kiper decided to go ahead and issue the last update to his mock draft this evening instead of waiting until tomorrow morning. There were a couple changes but he kept his selection of QB Cam Newton for the Panthers:
1 (1) QB Cam Newton
Is he the top player on my Big Board? No. But it's hard to blame a franchise in Carolina's position for falling in love with the extremely high ceiling of Newton. As I said when I projected him here before, there are immediate needs, and there is a decision that you believe will change the direction of your franchise for years to come. While I'm not certain Carolina isn't still listening for the right offer for this pick -- if you're heard me at all lately, you'll know I see this is one of the more unpredictable top 10's I can ever remember -- if the Panthers really see Newton as a transformative player who can be both a Pro Bowl quarterback and face of the franchise who draws a lot of buzz, they make this pick. If talent alone was all they were concerned with, Newton would be an easy choice. But this pick also requires a belief in his development and maturity. Will the Panthers have the patience to let him develop on the bench?
It's the high ceiling that the Panthers have fallen in love with. I remember watching this guy during Auburn's run to the BCS title and being amazed at his athleticism. At this moment I choose to believe that is the Newton we are going to get. Though I don't expect him to light the league on fire as a rookie I still expect him to get on the field by mid season. I'm not buying this stuff about him sitting a year.
More analysis of his top 7 after the jump...

Here's the remainder of Kiper's top 7:
2 - Denver - LB Vonn Miller
This would make more sense if the Broncos had stayed with their 3-4 defense. Miller's pass rushing ability will be marginalized at the MLB spot or even WLB in a 4-3. I'm not feeling this one.
3 - Buffalo - DT Marcel Dareus
Dareus will be able to play 3-4 NG or DE depending on the down. He's a good fit for the defense starved Bills
4 - Cincinnati - WR AJ Green
Might Chad Johnson be out the door with this selection?
5 - Arizona - CB Patrick Peterson
I have a hard time believing the Cardinals will pass on QB Blaine Gabbert here.
6 - Cleveland - WR Julio Jones
If Gabbert should be on the board here expect someone like the Vikings to move up to get him. Jones might still be on the board at #12.
7 - San Francisco - QB Blaine Gabbert
Gabbert doesn't seem to be a fit in SF so again I'm not seeing this pick happening.
So what do you think if Kiper's final mock?

The way the draft will go...
1. Cam Newton – no response needed
2. Marcel Dareus – Adefinate assest to Denver, and they already resigned Champ Bailey
3. Patrick Peterson – Best defensive player on the board plus Fitz played well at seasons end. 2nd round QB (possibly Mallet).
4. Von Miller – So much “wrong” there you need some “right”, also last years 3&4 receivers played well.
5. Blaine Gabbert – This organization is ready to turn the page from Warner and that USC fellow… who is Skelton (I kid)???
6. AJ Green – Matched with Muhammad Massioquai from UGA and gives Colt that premire target
7. Jake Locker – This team has the supporting cast to do something special… they just need a QB, and Jake has a following there.
- * * You heard them ALL here first * * *
Mel really does need to give it up…

I agree with 5
From what I see, the Cardinals might trade up to get Gabbert, if he’s there in their natural draft pick, they’re not passing up on him
Southern Alabama Community College dominates all NCAA sports.
NFLN said the latest reports suggest Gabbert will likely slip out of the top 5
Maybe to Tennessee, and if not them then much farther.
stay thirsty my friends
Cleveland and Cincy both supposedly have WR really high on their boards
And even higher than Gabbert now. So I wouldn’t be surprised. I think they’re both top 10 talent.
Walter Football has them both in the top 6 as well.
stay thirsty my friends
Kiper just seems like he is going for Homers
This just seems way out there with the two WRs going and Von Miller to Den but after all he is the “expert” but I am so excited for the Draft tomorrow!
NFLN reported that Den is divided over Miller or Dareus
With Fox leading the charge for Dareus. However they said most recently more are in favor of Miller.

Yea
Newton is going to be the pick at this point. Especially with today hearing about how Jerry Richardson actually met with Newton at his house (JRs house) for a lenghty interview and JR came away “very impressed” and today Hurney, Rivera and JR all said they thought Newton has the potential to develop into a franchise QB and are completly ok with his background after an extensive background check.
The writing’s on the wall. Hell, I was on the Cam train way back in early Feb when he came on Leno. All my friends said no way he goes number 1 and i said he would. It just makes sense. I even made a $20.00 bet with a co worker he would go number 1 and that was back in early March when everyone still had us taking Nick Fairley.
what does the pick of newton mean for clausen??

It means Chudzinski and Shula are way better judges of talent than OldhamA and MikeTrain
Man I crack myself up. Seriously, I think it’s about a 5% chance Clausen ever starts another game for the Panthers again, barring early injury. I think at some point they bring in a FA QB or make a blockbuster trade to get the starter for this year, and possibly next year. If they draft Newton, he’ll get the 2nd team reps behind the vet, if not, Clausen will, but I doubt he sees the field much at all. I foresee a Matt Schaub type trade in Clausen’s future before the 2012 or 2013 season, someone will remember the hype and offer something for him.

If Newton is indeed our pick
I can only hope that he is everything the Panthers envision him being. If he is able to step up and lead the team and the young players around him develop to their full potential then the Panthers have the makings of being a great team for years to come. I still like either Green or Dareus as the first pick but I’m on board no matter who they select.

Everybody is now sympathizing with this pick
I keep hearing “I wouldn’t pick him…but I can understand why Carolina needs to”. And it’s true. He’s not BPA, but without a QB the Panthers just won’t ever be able to compete in the NFC South.
So it’s boom or bust with Cam Newton. Either way things should be very exciting.
stay thirsty my friends
Sal Palintonio said Ron Rivera Spoke with Cam on more then 12 occasions. Anytime something popped up either media related or on the internet he called Cam personally and talked it out. Cam met JR at his own house and had a long conversation. JR came off impressed. Sal said Ron Rivera is one of the most respected guys in the entire NFL. Said he is very hard to pull one over on. He said if Cam was dishonest or phony RR and JR both would pick up on it. Both gave him glowing reviews. If THEY believe in this kid that much then any panther fan should accept it and embrace Newton when he is selected. He may not of been the guy you was pulling for or hoped we took. You may still have questions of your own. Hell you would be crazy not too but Two very well respected NFL minds have both gave him there seal of approval. That for myself makes the plunge a little bit easier. Fingers crossed it all works out and we FINALLY have our franchise QB

It’ll be great if his character concerns aren’t concerns, but that still leaves transitioning to the NFL, which is a boom or bust prospect.

that is very true and and is a honest concern if he can translate to the NFL or not. But the same goes for every guy drafted. Many might be “safer” picks but nobody knows how any of these guys will turn out till the lights come on Sundays and they get a taste of the NFL.

No one really questioned his on-the-feild production. The NFL learing curb applies to all.
His off feild concerns:
1. I think he’ll be buying his own laptops from now on.
2. once under contract his father can’t scheme a pay for play.
3. He dosen’t parrrrrttttaaaa!!!, drink, smoke, or do drugs.
So… I believe that I’m good.

One thing to remember… it’s kind of tiny but pretty important…
There’s a different QB coach this season than there was previously. This one knows how to develop young QB’s… unlike the previous one that knew how to destroy QB’s.
Finally!
I’ve heard good things about Shula. Fox was such a vet homer that grooming a rookie QB sounds foreign.

Shula turned Jay Fiedler into a respectable QB.
Imagine what he will do with a guy as talented as Newton.

Look what he did with David Garrard. This is the first true Elite prospect Shula has been able to get his hands on. I think the teams confidence in him helping Newton transition into a NFL Caliber QB weighs heavy on there decision.

Yup and people claiming Panthers are a horrid 2 -14 team and can’t protect Cam like Atlanta did Ryan. (brian billick said it this morning) forget the state the Falcons were in when they took Ryan #3 overall. After a Vick fiasco crippled the team and a College coach who ran out of town instead of dealing with it they were far from a safe franchise at that poinr. Look at them today. I think this team is A LOT better than anybody in the media wants to give us credit for. No reason to believe we can’t contend for a playoff spot in 2-3 years. Bucs and Falcons both turned it around. And it started at QB

I think the thing to note is this.
You can have a All Pro Cornerback, Defensive Tackle, and Wide receiver… but they strap the analogy Franchise with the Quarterback because they can do the most to elevate your organization.
Darrell Reevis don’t make the Jets… he’s not far from it, but he don’t make that team what it is… Mark Sanchez does.
Nadamah Kungsue don’t make the Lions a contender… he definately helps, but dosen’t make.
Larry Fitzgerald don’t make… you get the point.

Brown hasn't exactly lived up to his potential... yet... but Edwards has barely even seen the field.

negative nancy alert
I think Brown can’t be effective until he bulks up even more – but the problem is he loses his speed as he bulks up. I think he’s doomed to mediocrity playing as a 4-3 DE. The only way I see him contributing in any relation to his pick position for this team is when Rivera implements aspects of the 3-4, and only if they don’t bulk him up.
Brown, if you read this…please, for the love of god, stop over-using that pathetic excuse of a spin move. Learn some new tricks!
Some guys didn't get a chance because of Fox
How could Brown make a big splash when he’s playing behind Brayton, or Edwards when fox locked him away in a corner. You have to play in order to reach your potential.

I think something else that may get tossed by the wayside re: Cam is this...
We have a new offensive coordinator and QB coach. They’re not going to force Cam to run the same “run, run, pass, punt” offense that we’re used to. They will creatively use Cam (assuming we draft him) to his strengths much like the Rams did with Sam Bradford last year.
Cam Newton will either be Akili Smith 2.0 or Josh Freeman/Warren Moon/Donovan McNabb 2.0, if we draft him, I hope to every god there is that he’s the latter. If we don’t draft him, I hope he’s the former.
I do have one request from Newtonians (you love it) ….
Please don’t make the moderators’ job a living hell tonight if we pick Cam. You can throw some playful “I told you so’s” if you want, but go easy on everyone please. And, to the Anti-Newtonians, don’t antagonize by getting into pissing matches over the pick. Let’s just all get along tonight and be happy (or pretend to be happy), regardless of who we pick (minus Bowers).

I said something similar to this in a post a few days ago
For the sake of argument I just assume we will keep our current roster (no matter how unlikely it is).
But the idea of using Cam in a rollout fashion with Double Trouble and Shockey makes me a bit giddy. Thats a lot of things to worry about and takes a lot of pressure off of the receivers.
I certainly hope we start implementing innovative offensive techniques like that. For some reason I just don’t think we will.
by SlayerGhaleon on Apr 28, 2011 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions
I trust Chudz to do it...and I trust Shula to teach Cam the right way.
I know it will be hard to imagine anything other than Davidson and Scherer, but I think we’ve got a good stable of coaches to make taking Cam less of a risk. I’m not saying it’s still not a risk, but I think our offensive coaches makes it slightly less.
One cries because one is sad. For example: I cry because others are stupid, and it makes me sad.
We have been brain washed with Conservatism and mediocry. Big play offense and defense and a QB who resembles nothing like this franchise has seen before…I only got one thing to say

I just have two points to make:
1) Kiper is an idiot. His mocks rarely ever come true and I think he only has a job with ESPN because he has name recognition.
2) I won’t be surprised if Newton is the 1st pick, but I do think he will need at least a full year to develop into an NFL caliber QB. Will he see the field this season? Maybe, but I highly doubt it will be as the starting QB.
