Mocking the 2011 Panthers Draft: Jaxon Style

BWSmith and James set the trend of producing their own Panther mocks so I thought I would join the fun. I'm not going to try and guess a trade scenario, I'm just going to lay it out using the pre-draft pick schedule. I want to emphasize this is what I think the Panthers do, not what I hope they will do.

1 (1) - QB Cam Newton - I think GM Marty Hurney gives the Panthers new HC Ron Rivera the last key piece he has asked for, a franchise QB. They might shock everyone and pick Gabbert but I do think this pick will be a QB.

3 (65) - CB Devon House - With the drop off in CB talent after the 3rd round I think the Panthers go for the classic Ron Meeks cover 2 corner in the 6'0 House. House has a 2rd grade but I think the QB and DL depth pushes him to us at the top of the 3rd. Another CB option would be Shareece Wright.

3 (97)  C/G Stefen Wisneiski - The Panthers need a reliable back-up at center as last year's options struggled in their limited action. Wis can also play G which is just the kind of flexibility the Panthers love to fill their 6th to 8th OL roster spots. Though Wis is projected to go in the 2rd round he slides to the bottom of the 3rd.

4 (98) TE Jordan Cameron - This former basketball player is too reminiscent of Antonio Gates for the Panthers new offensive leadership to turn down. The kid will need to time to develop but he is the most athletic TE in the draft class and at 6'5" 250 lbs he could be a steal here.

More picks after the jump...

5 (132) DT Drake Nevis - Due to the depth at DT Nevis slides to the top of the 5th round due to concerns about his size. The Panthers though like his ability to penetrate and hope he can join the rotation in 2010.

6 (166) DE Ugo Chinasa - Here the Panthers add a potential 3rd down pass rush specialist that, unlike our current options in Everette Brown and Greg Hardy, Chinasa has the speed and athleticism to drop into coverage. At 6'5" and 260

6 (203) OT Derek Newton - The 6'5" 310 LB Newton ran a 4.99 at the combine and showed nice athleticism for a big guy. He may not be able to back-up the guard spot but he might be a nice back-up behind Jordan Gross in the twilight of his career.

7 (244) OLB Brian Rolle - Rolle is a bit of tweener as far as position but that's not why the Panthers draft him. This pick is about adding potential to special teams and Rolle has nice size and speed to be a coverage demon.

So what does everyone think? Lot's of variety right?
