Draft do-over 2010 (Shockers style)
Alright, guys.. your friendly neighborhood, Shockers here.
I wanted to first apologize for such a late post. I've been working on my time machine, and now we can finally go back in time to undo the mistakes we, the Panthers made.
Here's the game. We've gone back to 2010, and the Panthers are on the clock. Now, we've all seen how all the rookies performed this past season, so only we (the panthers fans) know the true value of the rookies that were taken last year.
Now, making any changes to our draft picks would obviously change the fate of the Panthers.. Not just our placing this year, but also injuries as well (but we do know that Matt blew even when healthy in 10-11). So we are going to assume that Moore and Davis will be healthy in the upcoming season (2010-2011).
The Panthers are on the clock, and Marty Hurney is whispering in your ear (yikes). He is telling you that we need to get Jimmy Clausen because he would be the best player available, and also would fill the need at the QB position. Some notable players taken later were Taylor Mays, Mt. Cody, Colt McCoy and Jacoby Ford.
Mr. Hurney needs you to go with a late 2nd/early 3rd round value player, so you will need to convince him if you were to reach for players like Jacoby Ford who had a later round value.
Who would you pick, and why?

Terrence Cody
A fat run-stuffer is what we needed this past season, and they don’t come any bigger than Cody.

Tbh I'd still seriously consider Clausen.
Only I’d make sure he gets proper coaching.
Other than that, I liked Terence Cody, he’s going to be a monster. I’d probably tell Hurney this is our coaching staff’s last year, so we don’t need to stay small.
Yes I'm a dude.

I like revisionary history... here's what I would have done:
#48- Javier Arenas, CB, Alabama: Though Arenas played nickel for Kansas City last year it’s clear he’s going to be a serious CB in the NFL. Finished the season with 41 tackles, 8 PDef and 1 FF coupled with a 21.2 yard KR average and 8.3 yard PR average he fills two roles immediately.
#93- Tony Moeaki, TE, Iowa: I hate going back to the same well again, but I’ve got to go to another selection by the Chiefs. Moeaki looks like he’ll be a top 10 TE within the next two seasons, and could be a top 5 guy depending how their passing game does. He finished 2010 with 556 receiving yards (15th among TEs) and is a nasty blocker.
#124- Cam Thomas, DT, North Carolina: Thomas didn’t play much time with San Diego, but though he only appeared in 6 games he totaled 7 tackles and 2 sacks. Impressive for a 335 lb NT. For comparison, Terrence Cody had 13 tackles and 0 sacks in 13 games and 1 start.
#175- Greg Hardy, DE, Ole Miss: Few would doubt Hardy was a great pick here. He has the makings of a starting DE, just needs to put more work in on his technique.
#198- David Gettis, WR, Baylor: It’s tough to knock the Gettis pick. He has all the traits you want and looks the part of a #2 WR in the NFL. With more training and if Gettis can crisp up his route running he could be a #1 guy.
#202- J’Marcus Webb, OT, West Texas A&M: A 12 game starter at RT for the Chicago Bears this year. Sure, their OL wasn’t great but they got better when Webb was put in the lineup. For Carolina he would be a depth player.
#204- Marc Mariani, WR, Montana: A Pro Bowl return specialist for the AFC last year with the Tennessee Titans. Paired with Javier Arenas our needs at KR/PR are satiated.
#223- Kavell Conner, OLB, Clemson: 57 tackles and 1 FF in 9 starts for Indianapolis. At 6’0", 242 lbs he fills that role we addressed with Eric Norwood. Pure value at this point.
#249- Robert McClain, DB, UConn: Another depth DB here… can’t really hate the pick and any time you get a guy starting at all deep in the 7th round you’re getting value.
Summary
So, what did I address in my revisit? Well, the Panthers have a guy in Arenas who can be their #2 CB immediately, they have addressed their need for a ‘do everything’ TE in Moeaki. They have a NT now, and have patched their need at KR. Added some depth at OL, DE and LB, while strengthening the DB unit.
What do we still need?
If this happened we would now need:
- QB
- WR
- DT
That’s it really… We would still have our 2nd round pick too. So, theoretically the Panthers could try and trade back, take A.J. Green and then Ryan Mallett, or could take Cam Newton, add another starting DT at the top of the 2nd round and work on spending big money on a FA WR, or wait to address it until Smitty is gone.
you mean you wouldn’t of drafted Clausen and traded for Armanti? james im shocked

I like the OT signing...
Given that and a FA OL signing I think Moore could have held his own. True he was bad at the beginning of the season but as he started to calm down (and he got protection) he was getting back to form…I just have a hard time seeing that Moore’s play at the end of ’09 was an illusion…
Now where's my REAL fans at?!
Friendly Bet: Moeaki vs. Graham
I’ll place a gentlemen’s bet that Jimmy Graham has a much more fruitful career than Tony Moeaki. I am a big fan of Moeaki (go Iowa Hawks!) but he is slower and has a history of injuries.

Honestly, I still like the Armanti trade.
I would have took Terrance Cody, Cuz thats who I was screaming for anyway. I was very big on Matt Moore at the time, so when we did take Jimmy Clausen I was telling my brother ( whos name is Jimmy as well ) that it was a wasted pick. I’m a big Tar Heel fan so instead of Eric Norwood in the fourth I would have picked Cam Thomas, I probably would have took him in the third ( we get to look back and see the value, so I can take him in the fourth ). The rest I would have left the same we did pretty good. We got Gettis and Hardy so I’m fine the rest of the way. Think about having two mountains in the middle, do you guys think we would be hurting at DT this year.

Yes I do.
And I have a right to, the guy was learning the WR position last year. Armanti has alot of potenial or Hurney would not have traded the pick. You have a right to call me dumb, but if he turns out to be another Smitty than I have the right, well right.

Good post and time killer
48: Javier Arenas – DB – Potential future star DB and solid returner on both KO and PR.
78: Mike Williams – WR – 65 Catches for 964 and 11TD’s, enough said.
112: Aaron Hernandez – TE – 45 Catch 6TD Rookie year, Chudz teaches him to block and he’s a perinnial Pro-Bowler
175: Greg Hardy – DE – Solid pick and still a steal at 175
202: Cody Grimm – FS/LB – 57 tackles and 2 INT’s in 9 starts, Mr. Everyback for TB
204: Ted Larsen – OG – Started 11 games for the Pats, solid rookie year. Has potential to be a starter for years.
223: Jeff Owens – DT – No stats, but the strongest guy in the 2010 class. Baker would have done him some good and he’d be ready to roll in 2011.
249: Legarrette Blount – RB – With all the injuries, he’d have gotten a chance. We’d have some hellacious trade bait.
This obviously doesnt include a trade for Armanti Edwards and would also have required the acquisition of a FA veteran QB, as I still would have release Delhomme. I think we would have seen an entirely different QB in Matt Moore without the SuperHype Machine, THE Jimmy Clausen, on the roster.

Blount wouldn't have flourished here...
He would have been stuck behind Williams, Stewart, Goodson and Sutton. No one would even know his name.

This assumes...
…that Blount would:
1) not get into a fist-fight with Smitty (that he would surely lose…no one punches 89).
2) be able to run successfully against an 8- or 9-man box, since our passing game would’ve still be crap on a stick…without the stick.

If we’d have gotten in on the deepest DL class in decades maybe we wouldn’t have such a gaping need now. But, noooooo.

BINGO!
48 Cody, Terrence DT 6’4" 354 Alabama The run stuffer we are missing.
78 Graham, Jimmy TE 6’6" 260 Miami – Great start for a raw talent. Eventual all-pro TE.
124 Thomas, Cam DT 6’4" 330 North Carolina. Strong finish in 2010
175 Hardy, Greg DE 6’4" 281 Mississippi. Go Panthers!
198 Gettis, David WR 6’3" 217 Baylor Go Panthers!
202 Webb, J’Marcus OT 6’8" 328 W.TexasAM Bears starter at RT. Enough althleticism to compete for LT in 2011.
204 Watson, Dekoda LB 6’1" 240 Florida State. Speedy, athletic, productive season at LB for Tampa Bay.
223 Wilson, C.J. DE 6’3" 290 East Carolina. Productive season. Now wearing a SuperBowl ring.
249 Brown, Stevie DB/SS 6’0" 210 Michigan 2010 yr-end starter – will compete for starting 2011 FS job w/Raiders.
When the draft rolled around, I was begging for us to take Cody...
but looking back on it, I’m kinda glad we didn’t; I get the feeling that he’s going be hampered by injuries for much of his career unless he drops some considerable weight this year (it was a big issue in Baltimore apparently).

I hear you, and I share the same skepticism
But honestly, the 48 pick could have just up and disappeared, and we’d be in no worse shape than we are now.
