Panthers Draft History Review: 1998 Busts

At the risk of over-polling my membership, I'm going to continue with my draft histroy review series. (Who am I to say 'No' to Bud Lite?) The plan is to vote for the biggest 'gem' and 'bust' of each Panthers draft and then run one final poll to determine the biggest of them all.

We are up to the busts of 1998 and man are there plenty:

1 (14) DE Jason Peter

Peter collected 83 tackles and 7.5 sacks before retiring after the 2001 due to a neck stinger that might have left him crippled if he continued to play. (I imagine going 1-15 didn't help either) There was a time I thought Peter was pretty good when healthy but that was the catch, he couldn't stay healthy as he only played in 38 games in 4 seasons. But as it turns out Peter was a ticking time bomb. He revealed in his tell-all book published in 2009 that he was addicted to drugs and prostitutes at the time. I no longer feel so bad for him.

3 (62) DE Chuck Wiley (Note: This pick was compensation from the Colts for GM Bill Polian)

Wiley's rookie season was a wash due to injury and after 16 starts in 1999 he left for the Falcons. NFL.com shows 16 starts in '99 but zero stats so either he was a special teamer with no impact or a starter with no impact. Either way I can see why he left. I also think its safe to say he was not worth losing Bill Polian.

One more candidate ...after the jump...

3 (73) DE Mitch Marrow

The Panthers were desperate for DE help this draft and decided to spend their first three picks on the position. Swing and miss...three times! It looks like Marrow lasted only one season on the Panthers roster and flushed out from there

So there are your three picks for the Panthers biggest draft bust from the 1998 draft. Cast your vote and make a comment if you wish.
