Let's take a brief respite from April Fools to talk about the Clemson Pro Day that is ongoing. Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer is there, and early reports are, well... pretty terrible. Neither Ron Rivera, nor Marty Hurney are there- so I think barring notice of a private workout we can safely say there is no interest in DE in the 1st round. As it pertains to Da'Quan Bowers I'm not quite ready to say "Cross him off your list", but I'm close. Meanwhile Bills' GM Buddy Nix, Falcons' GM Thomas Dimitroff and Cardinals' HC Ken Wisenhunt are all in attendance.
The only member of the organization there seems to be scout Jeff Beathard, which would further support little interest. As for Bowers, the story isn't so good (from Gantt):
"He's (Beathard) watching Bowers run fairly slowly. If he's fully healed it doesn't look like it."
On the one hand I feel bad for Bowers, but on the other he kind of brought this on himself by waiting until mid February to have surgery he knew he needed in early December. Think about this: DT Stephen Paea essentially had the same injury and surgery, but due to his attitude and demeanor he managed to raise his draft stock from being a fringe 1st/2nd rounder to a now 1st round lock. Meanwhile, Bowers looks like he's going to free fall down boards.
I'll update with information as it occurs, but to sum up just how ugly things are in Clemson, when Gantt was asked why he was at the pro day he responded:
"Beginning to wonder about that myself."
UPDATE: From Gantt:
"Mixed reports on Bowers. Some scouts had him over 5.0 in the 40. Dimitroff just rolled through and said he'd be an impact player."
Over 5.0 in the 40? Yeesh
