Around SBN: Roy Nelson Willing to Pay for His Next Opponent's Drug Test

Ladies and Gentlemen, today may be the single greatest day in Panthers history.

Today is the day of Cam Newton’s Pro Day at Auburn. It a day that may go down in infamy as the day where Cam Newton reassured all Panther fans that he is worthy of being taken as #1 overall and leading the Panthers to a Super Bowl. It is the day where we might finally know who the real #1 overall pick should be. Maybe it will be a day where we can finally stop arguing about QB’s and move forward towards the draft with an ever brighter future. ((And high value for our #1 pick in case we trade it away. =p))

The best part about all of this is that you can watch Newton and the Auburn Pro-Day live on ESPN3 starting at 1:30PM. We will see Cam Newton in his natural habitat instead of the foreign land known as the Combine. We will do our duty and see to it that he throws every route that a NFL QB needs to throw. Then we will all form our judgment on how he did and hopefully we will come to a consensus on whether or not we want Cam Newton in Carolina.

However, you guys have to remember is that this workout will be completely tailored to Cam Newton. This workout is going to be made to show off his strengths and prove that he is worthy of the #1 overall pick. If he is not confident in making a particular throw, chances are he's not going to throw it. Also remember that this is going to be more about our opinion rather than NFL teams. They’ve had 13 game films with Cam Newton in it to break down, so by now he’s either won the Panthers over or he hasn’t. This workout is more about the fans and is either going to solidify many of our doubts on this player and make the Blaine Banwagon grow ever stronger, or he’s going to make us double-take and wonder if we’re wrong about the guy.

Either way, I think Christian Ponder will be the best QB in the NFL Draft in April. But that's just my opinion! In any event, I will be watching and I hope you guys do as well.

I saw a part of Sportscenter where Justin Tuck of the New York Giants was talking about how Cam Newton was an athletic QB and how they don’t last in the QB that long. Pointed to the Manning brothers, Tom Brady, and Drew Brees as examples of QB’s that can stand in the pocket and make the good throws.

Instantly the talking heads of ESPN jumped to Cam’s defense. A lot of times it feels like it’s being pushed down our throat.

I put a fanshot up about that..........

But the public likes:
A. Heisman Winners
B. National Championship winners.
C. Good looking QB’s

Cam is all 3.
Course ESPN, NFL network and the like will shove it down our throats.

tuck is wrong

I don’t understand how people can claim that athletic QBs don’t last in the NFL. That is just plain dumb. Tuck is a good football player, but he was flatout wrong. Let’s look at the longevity of running QBs in the NFL…Steve McNair, Steve Young, John Elway, Donovan McNabb, Fran Tarkenton, and Randall Cunningham. Aaron Rodgers is a good runner, and Vick and Tebow pulled out some wins by running the ball as well.

Vick and Brady have had the same number of season ending injuries. But with all those guys, none of them are really big, strong QBs. I’m talking about Big Ben and Culpepper size. Cam has the size and speed.

If someone has a problem with how he throws, that’s one thing. But to say athletic QBs don’t last is just dumb.

by usana_gaines on Mar 8, 2011 2:56 PM EST up reply actions

I think it is because Cam is a "run first" QB

That he get so much criticism from players and ex-players. At Auburn he could look for his first read and if it wasn’t there he’d run. If he tries that in the NFL he’s going to get seriously injured. Even against Oregon he about go knocked out, and the NFL is a far cry more beastly than Oregon.

not buying it, but...

If Cam has a one read-run first mentality in Carolina, or anywhere for that matter, then I think he would get benched before he got hurt. I don’t think either of those will happen in the NFL. He’ll learn the system and dominate in the NFL. If he runs all the time because he fails to learn the system, he’ll have more highlight reel plays than wins. He’ll do what is demanded of him by the coach.

How many of his runs were running plays by design. I remember watching Tebow and Vick, and many plays are designed QB runs, which is not a reflection of his decision making at all.

by usana_gaines on Mar 8, 2011 5:18 PM EST up reply actions

Teams and co-ordinators adjust.

Tebow has not even had half a season of playing. If he doesn’t adapt as defenses adapt his performance will suffer. History has shown that as teams have time to adjust to Vick his performance as a QB tails off against good teams. As for your question how many of his plays were designed runs? Almost all. The system Auburn runs the QB is either pre-determined to hand the ball off, make a read while handing the ball off and keep it himself to run, or is is a pass play where if the first read is not open he pulls down and runs. His pass to run ratio in action was about 50/50. By comparison players like Ponder and Gabbert were 80/20.

I’ve never said Cam can’t learn to adapt, I’m simply saying the system he’s been in has most likely caused him to develop habits which will have to be coached out of him. He’s never been asked to do the things an NFL QB will have to do and hence there is no tape to determine if he is capable of doing in a game at any evidence. If he starts falling back on bad habits (presuming the coaching staff coaches not to one-read and dash) he simply won’t be able to stand up to running as frequently as he did in college. It isn’t a slight on Cam. Contrary to popular belief he is merely mortal and NFL defenses make it their business to punish mortals.

Cam Newton isn't a run first QB. He did what coaches asked him to do.....

and out of his last 169 designed pass plays that Auburn ran. Newton took off and rank on 15 of them….which just 1 percent more than Aaron rodgers ran last year and he didn’t do to bad last year…..so basiclly that logic is Bull crap.

There is a difference with being able to run….and running because that is all you can do…and people that say that about him are all people that are reading the negative hype and don’t know the facts.

I don't know where you got your information - but it is incorrect

Cam ran 15 times against Arkansas St alone, 30 times against Georgia, 22 times against Oregon.

Cam ran the ball 264 times last season versus 280 pass attempts. (For what it is worth he was sacked 23 times.)

So let’s just go with your information and assertions. Let’s say he did only take off and run around 10 percent of the time. Let’s say he did stick to the plan the coaches gave.

At 280 pass attempts + 23 sacks = 303 designed pass plays. Using you information (and I’ll round it up to 10% for easy math) That means Cam was only supposed to “take off and run” 30 times last season. Hmm, looks like Cam ran 264 times last season! Wow.

If Cam Newton isn’t a run first QB, explain to me how he ran the ball more than Ryan Williams (RB Va Tech) and Mark Ingram (RB, Alabama) combined?

I don't really mind

the losing season, because this has been the first time in a long time that we’ve really sucked(not that I would want it to stay that way), but I think it’s because we’re so unsure at QB and a good majority of members want a franchise QB now, rather than later. It’s understandable, but I’ll tell you that I can’t wait until draft day!

We are going to get Cam Newton. Just the way Rivera is talking about him. I also think Rivera not going to Mallet’s pro day and instead going to Cam’s pro day speaks volumes.

It is paid content, but a breakdown on why Cam will struggle in the NFL. Interesting stuff. For example in his entire collegiate career versus FBS opponents, he’s only thrown 9 check down passes. Ever.

Joyner was interviewed today on SportsCenter, and said it was his footwork that needed fixing.

Said he’s had 3 good coaches in college, who knew how to work with QBs, and that it’s still not right. He allowed for the possibility that the recent QB coach he’s been working with might fix it, but said he doesn’t take enough drop back, to allow room to step into the longer throws.

Sounds like an easy mechanical fix to me.

We will see Cam Newton in his natural habitat instead of the foreign land known as the Combine

TRANSLATION→

We will see Cam Newton in a staged (much like Disney’s Animal Kingdom does with Kilimanjaro Safaris and how the animals are staged) and choreographed scene which will show off his strengths and hide weaknesses (much like his private workout day) instead of being in a comparative showing of all professional QB traits and skills (like the NFL Combine).

FURTHER TRANSLATION→

Prepare to be wowed by Cam Newton, who will be a wonderful specimen today in a choreographed, staged scene highlighting strengths and hiding weaknesses, but nonetheless doesn’t prove him as professional QB caliber.

If this is the SINGLE greatest day in Panther history...

Then we have one hell of a lame future. IMO, the SINGLE GREATEST day in Panther history involves the Panthers winning the SB and hot women falling from the heavens…

So if this is truly the SINGLE GREATEST day in Panther history, I really have nothing to look forward to. Might be a bit of a hyperbole Revshawn…just a bit!

Did you know.............
Of those on the list from the last 10 years, the ones that have had some success have one thing in common: Throwing experience. Newton threw 292 Division I passes and was sacked 23 times, or once every 13 attempts. Gabbert, on the other hand, had 933 pass attempts and 42 sacks (once every 22 attempts). Gabbert has looked at college coverage in Division I games 660 more times than Newton, so the value of experience must be considered.

Nobody in baseball uses technology to steal signs

Its all about a coach in your dugout or a player on the bases watching the opposing 3B coach. Remember when people thought the Phillies where using binoculars from the bullpen to steal signs? There was an uproar from fans. Totally different scenario.

definitely not. You overestimate how much weight can fluctuate, especially for a man of his size.

by Mr. E on Mar 8, 2011 8:44 PM EST up reply actions

Not really.

I don’t think that variance is meaningful, one way or the other. Is 291 or 296 his ideal weight? I don’t think either of us know. A pro conditioning program will probably get him to around 300, anyway.

The participation today isn’t over. I know neither he nor Newton ran the 40, apparently feeling their Combine results were good enough. have they stated already they’re (or Fairley, more to your point) not doing any agility drills? Even if he’s not, his results in the cone, shuttle, and BJ were so much better than Dareus, why should he do them again? That’s really who he’s ‘competing’ against, isn’t it?

I have no idea if he’s going to bench press, but hope he will, as the 24 reps that Dareus put up is lame for a guy of his size and supposedly strength.

Hope that answers your questions, as I don’t duck when somebody asks me something, as opposed to some others here.

I think(at this point) the Panthers will take either Newton or Fairley with the #1, depending on several factors, including whether they think they can land a quality QB in FA. But, as you said, it’s all conjecture on our parts.

by bigdavis on Mar 8, 2011 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

Re: Dareus' bench press

He has very short arms for a DT, meaning his bench numbers are even worse. Usually the short armed guys can just bounce it off their chests…frankly I was shocked he did so few.

Not sure Fairley would do many more than Dareus’ 24, but he has the prototypical arm-length needed to keep O-lineman away from his body.

"If you see this ugly ass face, that means I scored...again!"
~Stevonne Smith

by ERL on Mar 8, 2011 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly - I marvel at the lack of comment by the "experts" over the 24 from Dareus.

And they call Fairley “soft.”

Shoot. 24 is pussy on the macho scale for a guy who’s 319.

by bigdavis on Mar 8, 2011 3:17 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Again

The 24 is not ideal. But I reckon that reps on the bench is not the most important measurable for the DT. What they really care about is what they show on film and we are not talking about sacks necessarily here.

As noted by so many people including Mayock both DTs are pretty close.

The issue with Fairley

Is that he isn’t quite the specimen that Dareus is, he only had one really good year of college and he really would function best in a penetrating 4-3 defense, which is not the norm in the NFL.

I can see him slipping, perhaps as low as 8 to Tennessee. I think there is a decent chance Dareus goes before him as well.

by ERL on Mar 8, 2011 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

Honestly,

Things aren’t sitting right with me about him. Haven’t really since the interview… things just aren’t adding up to me. Call it a ‘gut feeling’ more than anything else.

- Dedicated enough to be working out three times a day and running two-a-day drills, but turns up looking less than ideal in Indy.
- Tells us ’he’s ready to show everything’ at the combine, then pulls out of a lot of drills
- Seems more concerned tweeting about how people should vote him onto the cover of NCAA 12 than anything else
- After being criticized for being underweight he magically appears 6 lbs heavier at the pro day, but then wont prove anything in the speed drills

I’m just uneasy about the whole thing, like he’s trying to craft himself as the perfect draftable DT, so he’s avoiding any risk factors.

I’m not sold on Dareus either… where I sit now is questioning both of them.

by James Dator on Mar 8, 2011 2:57 PM EST up reply actions

Well that's your feeling on it and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I too have moved on from either DT, personally. Not because of anything they did, but because I feel like there is a better prospect at another position, one that kept the other ‘Tigers’ glued together for a couple seasons when they had no business winning more than 4 conference games.

Gut feelings are the quintessence of subjectivity, aren't they?

Similar to that back-o-the-neck feeling, the gut feeling is often trusted, sometimes correct.

I’m going by more objective evidence or performance: 12 sacks, 24 TFL.

What were the “lot of drills” that he pulled out of at the Combine? I thought it was only the bench press.

The Panthers need a productive, aggressive DT. Of course, they need a lot of other things, too :-)

by bigdavis on Mar 8, 2011 3:11 PM EST up reply actions

Indeed it is... completely subjective

I tend to listen to my personal uneasiness because it’s served me well for the most part, but I sure don’t expect anyone else to bank on it.

Didn’t bench, didn’t run the 20 or 60 yard shuttle, so he did 4/7… small things for sure, but I was disappointed when he said he was going to ‘show everything’.

Time will tell on all this stuff- I’m really glad I don’t have to make the pick.

by James Dator on Mar 8, 2011 3:27 PM EST up reply actions

I just think these kids are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Every move they make and every thing they say is being scrutinized and critiqued and criticized, and studied ad nauseam. I almost think that it was better when the combine wasn’t televised and the media surrounding the event was kept to a minimum. Same for the college pro days. Everybody is looking for something to be wrong with a player instead of focusing the positives.

At this point, I don’t know who I like the most. I have a list of pros and cons for every player. We’ve got enough needs that any of them could be the right pick. BPA? Who the hell knows. Pick for need? Where do you start. It complicates matters even more that there is no free agency until a new CBA is reached. Many needs could be filled here but you can’t just sit on your hands and wait. They could get it done tomorrow, or it could take till August. This whole offseason is a mess. Hopefully, Rivera and Co. will get it right and we’ll be ready to take back the NFC South in 2011.

and the guy that was driving wasn’t paying attention and cut off a car. Well the occupants were a bunch of guys and started raising hell at us and started shouting at us to pull over. Being young, stupid and in the military we did. They got out and then we got out. I was the smallest at 6’2" 190. The rest were 6’6" 260, 6’1" 310, and 6’4" 340. (We could barely squeeze in the car to begin with and the shocks rose a good 4 inches when we got out)

They took one look at us and got back in their car and sped off. LOL

I mean, they basically had 3 RB’s in the backfield (Newton, Dwyer, and Mcalebb) one of whom could throw the ball really far….don’t think the 5 yard curl was used as much more than a space filler for the playbook :p

Just curious what is the split right now between pro cam and anti cam?

Just by glancing at the comments it seems like 60/40 anti to pro. Although I could be (probably am) way off, so what would you guys say it is?

70/30 anti to pro, IMO

There’s a few select vocal supporters, but not many think he’s worth the #1 overall pick. Coupled with the character concerns and the FO’s habit of staying away from problem players due to past problems, I find it unlikely that he’d be taken. If he is, then they’re really sold on him and the character concerns aren’t as much an issue as we thought, so I’d get behind him.

It’s great that he can make these throws on his pro day, but can he do it with a blitz in his face with the game on the line? Can he look off a safety and make a critical throw for a first down? Those are the questions that really need to be answered.

I don't know right now guys.

Considering how many times he’s had to practice this one workout, I’m not impressed. You can see the potential, but I’ve seen a high balls thrown that would get wideouts killed on gameday.

"Once again the trousers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn

by Revshawn on Mar 8, 2011 5:57 PM EST reply actions

Well, he's looked much better than he did at the Combine, and if he hadn't, it'd be over for him as a top pick.

If you’ve been able to watch this, you’d notice he’s improved his footwork immensely. And his weight is shifted from back to front foot properly. Expect to hear these observations from experts when they review today.

by bigdavis on Mar 8, 2011 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

Alright guys. I'm off for now. Here's my opinion on the guy.

Definitely an anti-climax. I’ve not seen enough that would make me pick him as the #1 overall pick. He’s got a great arm on him and good mobility, but the accuracy isn’t there. He’s overthrowing far too many balls for my taste. Some of the throws he threw today would have gotten wideouts killed. Definitely a project-type player, but he may start Game 1 in Carolina if we don’t get a stopgap QB.

He’s not ready for the NFL. At least not right now. Great arm, but he isn’t hitting his guys consistently. For comparison, last year Sam Bradford threw 63 passes on his Pro Day. All of them were caught except for one drop.

My take was that both he and Fairley performed very well.

If the Panthers were looking for today to make their choice any simpler, it didn’t happen.

Both showed excellent footwork, and that’s a big part of the test for both positions.

I’d be happy with either one as #1.

Fairley is ready to make an impact immediately; Newton may take a year, but he’ll be a force in a year. JMHO.

but I’m willing to give him a little bit of credit if he was (as my memory serves) the GM of the Texans at the time of that great draft debate (or debacle, if you were part of the 95% of fans who thought Bush should go #1) lol…

But yea, I can’t pretend like this analysis is objective :p I still want Fairley…I just get that “gut feeling” that he’s going to be a defensive force and could be an extremely vital spark for our D-line…

To Tomthehomer,

that same gut feeling you have about Fairley I had about Matt Ryan, Julius Peppers, & Hakeem Nicks(Jury still out). Some players you just know will be great. I also had the same feeling about Vince Young but he hasn’t panned out yet. I get the same feeling about Cam but just the opposite of the others. I feel almost sure he’s gonna be a bust. Not sure why, I just do. If we pick him I hope I’m wrong.

I think at this point, most of what we can rely on is the gut feelings...

cause unfortunately, the pressing concerns floating around the top prospects right now are ones that realllllllly can’t be smoothed out before the draft (They sort of can, but that’s only if you’re an actual scout who isn’t relying on 2nd hand info to make your character/Football IQ assessments)…
