This is a repost of a fanshot I put up a couple of months ago. There have been a number of player bandwagons since then so I thought I'd put it back up. Also, many of the new CSR members probably missed it. You can watch a replay version of all of Auburn's 2010 games with Newton as the main focus.
I'm not advocating taking Newton at #1, just providing another layer of data to evaluate.
These are my thoughts from back in January.....
My simplistic take is this, Newton has four things that you cannot teach:
Is he #1 overall material? I don’t know. But, I don't know about Gabbert either. I do know that Newton appears to have good field vision and excellent touch on his passes. Everybody said Tebow couldn’t do his thing in the NFL but he’s shown that he could, albeit a small sampling. On that note, Newton surpassed Tebow’s SEC, single season rushing record…..in 8 games. Will he rush for 1,000+ yards in the NFL? Probably not, but having the ability to run for first downs, at crucial times, is invaluable. His skills add a dimension to his game that is becoming increasing important in the NFL. That being the ability to extend plays with elusiveness/rushing ability. What stands out to me the most is his desire to win. He has a will to win and a "refuse to lose" mentality. He looks like he plays with a chip on his shoulder. It is a mistake to underestimate the value of being a winner.

Regardless of his poor passing performance at the combine, I still like Newtons athletic ability and passing potential. Gabbert continues to climb the boards and I like him too. I don't think either guy is a "sure thing" but they both have a lot of promise. Honestly, I'd be happy with either guy. There is a lot of smoke screening going on right now so it's hard to tell how teams really feel about these guys. Hopefully, coaches and scouts will go back to the college tape and reassess the abilities of these QB's.
