ESPN's Adam Schefter reports there are nine teams set to conduct private workouts with Auburn QB Cam Newton before April 27th. In my mind Newton still represents the best possibility for the Carolina Panthers to trade back in the 2011 draft with his rare combination of skills being very enticing to numerous teams.
While there are some teams on the list who would need to give up an immense amount to move up to #1 (Miami at #15, Minnesota at #12) there are several others who could offer the Panthers the unique ability to move back and still acquire elite talent (Buffalo at #3, Cincinnati at #4). Most noticeably absent from the list: Arizona at #5 who seem to have settled on Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert as their option as was reported yesterday.
It would not surprise me either if the Panthers gamble like the San Diego Chargers did in 2004, taking Eli Manning and then shopping him, essentially telling the New York Giants to select Philip Rivers. I could see the Panthers taking Newton and then waiting to see how the draft plays out to shop him to an amorous team; provided they don't like him enough to keep him.
After the jump the full list of teams interested in Newton, and their draft pick
- Carolina Panthers: #1 overall
- Denver Broncos: #2 overall
- Buffalo Bills: #3 overall
- Cincinnati Bengals: #4 overall
- Cleveland Browns: #6 overall
- Tennessee Titans: #8 overall
- Washington Redskins: #10 overall
- Minnesota Vikings: #12 overall
- Miami Dolphins: #15 overall
