Panthers extend RFA and EFRA tenders to 20 free agents
If there is a lockout shortened season many have called whatever 2011 is a 'season of veterans' and this is clearly the case based on the tenders handed out today to potential free agents. Obstensibly the Carolina Panthers organization carpet bombed their free agent class extending tenders to anyone 'userful or semi useful with less than 6 years experience', per Darin Gantt. This list includes well known guys like DeAngelo Williams and Matt Moore, to Keith Null and Charly Martin.
Already people are formulating all sorts of conspiracy theories, like "they tendered four DTs- that means they don't like one in the draft" in reality, file this one away as due diligence. This is a back-up move because the Panthers can choose to retain nobody and let them hit free agency, it just gives them right of first refusal. Furthermore, it ensures that if there is no true free agency there's still a group of guys who know the play book. Also, it would be a shame to lose players Ron Rivera hasn't even had time to evaluate.
The real question now becomes: "What were the tenders?" especially for DeAngelo Williams and Charles Johnson. If they are at the 1st round grade there is a possibility someone would take a chance on them in a RB and DE weak draft, if either are tendered at the second round level it would be insane not to grab one. Agents seem as mystified as the players, as (again per Gantt) they don't know at this time what level their clients have been tendered at.
The list of players after the jump
UPDATE: According to Darin Gantt LB James Anderson was tendered at the 1st round level
- RB DeAngelo Williams
- DE Charles Johnson
- TE Jeff King
- LB James Anderson
- QB Matt Moore
- WR David Clowney
- S Marcus Hudson
- TE Dante Rosario
- DT Derek Landri
- CB CJ Wilson
- K Rhys Lloyd
- LB Jordan Senn
- LS JJ Jansen
- CB Richard Marshall
EFRA (can only resign with the Panthers <2 accrued seasons experience)
- QB Keith Null
- DT Ed Johnson
- G CJ Davis
- WR Charly Martin
- LB Nic Harris
- DT Nick Hayden
The following players were not tendered: Abdul Hodge, Jamar Williams, Gerald Alexander, Rob Pettiti and Chris Morris.

Panthers LB James Anderson got the first-round tender. Last year’s was 2.621m for 5s. He made 1.176m on low 4-year tender in ’10.

Just my take on things
But if free agency isn’t an option we will need him. This points to the Panthers not drafting secondary high too, IMO.

i agree
i think this means peterson is out of the equation. it cant be coincidence that hes tendered a day after the combine
by pantherpride on Mar 2, 2011 11:12 PM EST up reply actions
they don't have to keep the guy
Maybe someone more knowledgeable can explain RFA tags, but I got the impression that it just gives you first dibs. This is important in the case of a prolonged lockout – maybe draftees won’t have time to learn and be evaluated. There’s an article on Steve Reed’s site about how Rivera has contingency plans for different lockout scenarios, and that foresight is one of the reasons he was chosen as a coach.
The Owners lose the salary cap and players under 6 years of experience lose free agency
So Carolina can now match any offer sheet. I think it means essentially we get first dibs. Because of the level of tender we offered Marshal any team that signs him away would have to give us draft picks as well as beat our offer. So unless we elect to release him, he isn’t going anywhere without the team that wants him paying him more than we offer AND giving us draft picks.
Could be a bluff to make folks think we aren’t picking DB high, but based on our current depth chart after the tenders my guess is that we will not be picking Peterson or Amukamara.

Big picture though
If a new CBA is signed those tags mean next to nothing.

I don't understand tendering Marshall
Clowney is questionable, as well.
by Ol' Uncle Munnerlyn on Mar 2, 2011 8:02 PM EST reply actions
Marshall, Martin, Clowney ? All is well in Panther nation tonight.
Clowney has some upside at least he can run a deep route up with the field with good speed and heck maybe one day come down with something, Marshall is not going to be on this team next year b.c. he doesn’t want to this is just a way of getting the most out of losing an impending free agent as RjMetalhead said. Third, C. Martin ???? I mean we already have W. Wright under contract do we really need Martin ?? I guess maybe C. Martin could be a new favorite of B. Murphy somewhere down the line as a special teams specialist but he is never going reach any higher on the Panthers WR depth chart then he is or was a year ago before getting injuried.
J. Anderson will get some attention as well but is not going to be plucked away for a 1st round pick no way. C. Johnson may get some looks for with a lockout looming it is hard to imagine any team giving up 1st rounders for C. Johnson even though he did have 11.5 sacks a year ago and is poised for a big pay raise with Carolina. D-Will is someone the Saints and Dolphins may take a run at but we are so deep at RB we could lose him for a 1st rounder and survive. I mean with J. Stewart, M. Goodson, T. Sutton (could return as a UFA), and J. Vaughn already signed to future contract we are so deep at RB it is crazy plus if we got a high enough pick we could replace D-Will with M. Ingram out of Alabama in the first round (middle of it that is) and I would be fine with that.
So interesting that D-Will and C.Johnson didn’t received 1st & 3rd round tenders kinda werid but we supposing looking at D. Bowers from Clemson as the #1 Overall pick so if his knee healthy and C. Johnson is resigned looking out for Panther defense to be at the top of the NFL in 2011.

THis may also be a precaution incase the current CBA carries thru next year
If there is no rookie cap and no #1 worthy QB, it makes all the sense in the world to bring Matt back and wait for next years class. Or take one with a later pick, though this means trading up. Either way, keeping useful vets is the right call with a questionable free agency.
OR
They are going to extend talks and free agency starts Friday. They need to lock down any semi useful player in order to not lose half their team in two days.

Ain't
For what it’s worth, that’s a first-and-third tender on DeAngelo. I feel like each of these deserves the proviso "not that it means much.

Add it to the pile of bad moves this organization has made.
For people being paid that much cash, they really don’t do a better job than most analysts, or some fans could do. As much as I love football, sometimes the decisions pro teams come to make me want to stop watching. At least in college there isn’t a mass exodus of players through trades and cuts after every season.

Not to mention, I love the guy on the field but since going to Chicago he’s picked up his soapbox. Always getting into arguments on Twitter with random people about player safety, the CBA etc.
He had a good season, more power to him- but I prefer the strong and silent Jon Beason types.

Injury
Just our luck really lol but when TD went down Williams was viewed as a potential starter (He was held in pretty high regard by Chicago; most of them felt he would’ve been the starter had they not already had Briggs)…

by silver82blade on Mar 2, 2011 9:29 PM EST up reply actions
Maybe but.
His injury is just not healing and they figure that nobody is gonna pick him up so they resign him cheaply later on. I mean N. Harris played some good football for us and did some great things I really like him as a young LB and he can play ever LB positon but is only slightly cheap then J. Williams. J. Williams for C. Harris was a total Salary dump and even though some view it as Carolina getting screwed I don’t b.c. Harris was vastly overpaid and didn’t fit into the youth movement the Panthers went through last season plus we have had to have S. Martin ride the bench for a second season and that was not an option. Harris was older, getting injuried more often and oh yeah did the Bears win the Super Bowl with him and Peppers to aging vets this past season UM NO ~ so the Bears can have the big expensive contracts b.c. in 2012 -13 when we are back to the top of the NFC South and the Bears an sinking in the NFC choaking on huge overpaided expensive contracts I am gonna be smiling at BOA Stadium.

If Marshall is on the team next year
I’ll be disappointed. I don’t care if our Pass D takes a hit, I can’t stand him.
Go Panthers
I think people are misunderstanding the RFA tags
They aren’t commitments, it doesn’t mean any of these guys will be on the team next year and all of them can/will go if they aren’t offered a veteran min contract.
It’s just an easy way to get right of first refusal, and in the case of Richard Marshall I feel like it’s a total ploy to try and bait someone into signing him like we did with Ricky Manning in 2004, thus getting Chicago’s 3rd rounder.
Follow me on Twitter! @James_Dator
These RFA tenders mean next to nothing
The only way they are relevant is if the NFL and NFLPA agree to play the 2011 season with another uncapped year and no CBA. It’s simply protection in case this happens, so the under 5 year RFA’s cant be scarfed up with no compensation coming back to the Panthers. If/when a new CBA is signed, these tenders will disappear and be meaningless.

well then
out of all the players that are tendered. who do we keep and who do we refuse? give me more than just marshall.
My guess:
- Charles Johnson
- DeAngelo Williams
- James Anderson
- Jordan Senn
- Ed Johnson
- Derek Landri
- JJ Jansen
Furthermore, I think they wouldn’t match an offer on DeAngelo Williams if he signed an offer sheet. I believe they would let him go and get the 1st and 3rd round draft picks, however I do believe they would match an offer sheet on Charles Johnson.

I saw two out of three saying Gabbert's the best available QB
and one mistakenly thinking that the Auburn and Missouri “spreads” were anything alike, leading him to say folks shouldn’t use the spread offense argument as applied to Newton. The fact is, the Auburn spread WAS a horizontal running based offense, as pointed out. That doesn’t mean Newton isn’t a great potential QB, but the argument presented for him here was baseless.
