I found this over at Bleeding Green and I found it very interesting. We have tons of cap space but also have to deal with signing a #1 pick most likely and the influx of free agents we have. Seems like there is no direct correlation with spending and winning especially with Denver and Dallas towards the top and Tampa Bay and Kansas City by the bottom. With all this cap room will we be trying to piece together some free agent pieces? It is an option by looking at these figures.

Remember that there's going to be a rookie cap
So we’re not going to be handing out a ridiculous contract to whoever the #1 overall pick is.

That aspect of it seems to be lost on 75% of the prognosticators out there...
everyone is still talking about rookie “mega contracts”, but if there’s one thing the owners WILL NOT compromise on is the rookie wage scale….

exactly
but this is being ignored by a lot of people…they’re still treating it like we’re going to be giving out 50+ million contract or something…

it won't matter, since they can't sign the rookies until the new one is in place anyways

Bingo
The rookie pay scale will impact this year’s rookie class. Bank on it.

how is the bucs have no cap?
i thought we were the cheapest team in the league
They went through their firesale last year...
and took their fair share of shit for it; winning shall cure all though

I thought Washington was like, 5th or something...
If you guys get a chance, look up “the A to Z guide to Dan Snyder”…it really makes you glad to not be a redskins fan lol

For those wondering why Tampa is so cheap.... that wont last long
Here is who they have to resign:
RB Cadillac Williams
TE John Gilmore
TE Nathan Overbay
TE Jerramy Stevens
TE Kellen Winslow
OG Davin Joseph
OG John Malecki
OG Keydrick Vincent
OL Donovan Raiola
DL Erik Lorig
DL E.J. Wilson
LB Quincy Black
LB Adam Hayward
LB Barrett Ruud
CB Ronde Barber
CB Elbert Mack
FS Tanard Jackson
Winslow, Ruud, Jackson and Joseph will all command deals upwards of $5+ million

I thought vincent was already released?
only reason I remember it is because that dropped them to youngest team in the league lol

Because of his suspension Tanard Jackson's contract rolls over one year.

What are the chances we grab a TE from TB? Are they any good besides Winslow?
What’d TB do? Did they just give Keydrick a 1 year contract? I thought we cut him last season…
And TB may not re-sign Cadillac… didn’t he suck the past couple of seasons, or is that Ricky Williams I’m thinking of?
Jerramy Stevens has skill, but I don’t think he’s a big enough upgrade over the guys we have now. Winslow definitely fills the role for myriad reasons, but TB will franchise him unless they’re too scared about losing Davin Joseph.
Vincent was indeed a 1-year deal.
I don’t think they’ll clamor to resign Cadillac unless the price is right.

I'd love to get Vincent back
from the Bucs to solidify the o-line. That would be a pretty good pick-up and can finally bring some semblance of unity to the o-line as well.

TB will have to franchise either Kellen Winslow or Davin Joseph… either would be a HUGE ‘get’ for the Panthers.

Well if they franchise Winslow
I hope they aggressively pursue Either Vincent or Joseph. Or in a dream world we get both and kill two birds with one stone by finally being able to stabilize the o-line and we’d have good depth at the position too.

Well with Chud....
I could certainly see Winslow coming here if he’s not tagged. Coached him at the U and for his career year in Cleveland. They seem to work well together.

Absolutely...
But I think he’ll definitely be tagged

I do too
Which means we should be ready to put a pretty decent bid in on Davin Joseph.

I don’t understand! We have “plenty of cap space”, but are second on the list. Is having such a low number (73 Mil) a GOOD number? Can someone explain this, please :/
Taylor Yates for #1 pick!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, low is good
This is how much money we have on the books for 2011 (if there’s a season)
In 2009 the salary cap was $130 million, if that same cap was in place today the Panthers would have $57 million to spend on players

Good find, GMallory. I'm adding this to my faves list for future reference. Thanks.
