What do you think about Richard Marshall?

I'm a reader over at the Eagles site, Bleeding Green Nation, and rencently someone posted a list of available FA corners and thier rankings. Nnadmi was obviously the highest, but #2  in this guy's mind was a bit of a surprise. It was none other than your Richard Marshall. I honestly have never heard of him before, but I haven't really been paying attention to the Panthers of late. Anyway, the author goes on to say that he is one of the up and coming top 5 corners in the league, and gave him a better rating than Grimes, Cromartie and Bailey as a good signing (obviously future considerations are more important than past).  Here is the link to the story. So what do you guys think of Richy Marsh? Comments are more appreciated than votes, but both are welcome. Thanks.

That writer is spot on. He rivals Asomugha as the top corner FA on the market

He's good, and would be a phenomenal compliment to Assante Samuel

He has had his fair shake of good and bad plays. He would be decent, but don't get too excited if he ends up on your squad.

I pity your team if you are relying on this guy to cover ANYONE!

not exactly how i would describe him

top corner is a huge stretch. he isnt even our top corner. he has been good at times but this past season he really struggled. alot of panther fans are relieved hes leaving

by pantherpride on Feb 9, 2011 2:37 AM EST reply actions

the reason he has so many tackles is because he loses himself so often on plays

and has to play catch-up… he’ll lose track of the play too often to give him an A grade

on good days though, he can limit a decent WR to maybe a catch or two… chances are someone will overpay him

by vitzeng on Feb 9, 2011 2:49 AM EST reply actions

not really...

and he’s a questionable tackler when faced with having to take down someone from the front.

Actually I think he does play the run really well for a CB. He is best as a nickel corner…sort of the role that Woodson plays in GB. If you are looking for a guy to lock-down the outside, you could fare better.

It seems that he’s out of position a lot… then has to play catch-up to get back into the play…

He was benched by Fox during the season “for personal reasons” I think…

He didn’t show up for a team meeting one time this season… this might have led to his benching.

he didn’t have a very good year this season… he tried to go for the knock out when tackling and not the tackle…

In the words of one poster in a Monday Morning Optimist (which reviews performance of the team and singles out specific players for doing well, or doing poorly) Marshall is consistently mediocre.

He was in the pessimistic or extremely pessimistic part of the Monday Morning Optimist more often than not.

He isn’t our top corner and we won’t be heartbroken to see him walk into the sunset.

Marshall is a Rosenhaus client

Which means you’ll hear plenty of misinformation in the media claiming he’s far better than he is.

Let me put it this way: There’s a reason a 2-14 team told him immediately following the season that he wouldn’t be back, something no other Carolina free agent heard.

Marshall is completely mediocre. He’d either be one of the better nickel backs in the league, or one of the worst starting corners

that they wouldn’t be offering him another deal.

But they still want 150 for his practice Jersey?

That’s crazy. He was good, but he weren’t no Morgan or Pep.

Can't help but feel like Marshall only plays the game for the money

This year for us he raised a big stink about getting a new contract. Instead we tendered him as a RFA. Unlike other players who would have taken this in stride and played their hearts out in hopes of getting a long term deal at the end of the season, Marshall just went through the motions. He was consistently picked on by opposing QBs, and his high tackle totals are only the result of being thrown at so many times.

He was out-played by 7th round pick and 2nd year player Captain Munnerlyn, who actually did a great job covering #1 receivers on occasion.

I think what is likely to happen with Marshall is this: Some team is going to pick him up and give him a nice contract. Instead of playing up to that new contract, you are going to get nothing better than average play out of him. He just wants his pay day.

He's a bum

I’m happy we’re not resigning him. I think we can do so much better. Expect at least one hold and one pass interference play per game. This happens because he is always getting beat. He might be a decent nickel or dimeback, but that’s it!

by Deuceklinco on Feb 9, 2011 10:29 AM EST reply actions

If you're the eagles, this would not represent an upgrade over your current personell

Aside from the top targets in FA, there will probably be many #2, #3 type CB’s who would be better options than Marshall (especially his inflated sense of self worth).

I guess you could say he’s not too well liked in Carolina… he may be playing the wrong position… but he didn’t step it up in a contract year.

Then again, neither did Peppers but he’s a special case.

by scorpion12 on Feb 9, 2011 10:53 AM EST reply actions

He reminds me of Cromartie, and not in a good way.

I think Cromartie is extremely overrated. He is the biggest hole in the Jets defense, and the only reason you hear his name so often is because opposing QBs throw in his direction 90% of the time and he makes the tackle after the ball is caught. Cromartie is still better than Marshall.

Marshall was a very good nickel back, but constantly gets burned at corner, and only has high tackle counts because so many competed passes are made under his cover. Problem is Munnerlyn plays just as good at nickel and arguably better at corner. Marshall came into the year making a stink about wanting a big contract, then came out on the field and played like crap. Panther fans do not respect players with giant egos and barks louder than their bites.

by ppalm on Feb 9, 2011 10:59 AM EST reply actions

He's a decent corner

But much better suited to being the nickle as opposed to being a starter. He’s also got a very inflated sense of his worth, so we’re letting him walk.

nickle corner

he’s a good bump and run guy, and a good tackler. in the nickle, he can cover a 3rd string receiver on a slant or post, man to man, and be okay, or play the run. that’s about it, though. he treats double moves like i treat chocolate, bite every time. and he’s the first CB i ever saw get TWO pass interference calls on the same drive.

"Ancient History."

That’s the first thing I thought of when I read the thread title. When I think of our FAs that we need to resign, he’s nowhere on my list. I think the biggest issue is that he (or at least his agent) values his talents more than they are worth. We can find someone at least as good as he is, if not better, for a much smaller salary.

I voted for good play/bad play. He is decent, but don’t expect to hear any stories of receivers being stuck on “Marshall Island” next season.

Grimes is a better player in coverage and Cro has a twevle foot wingspan (and 12 kids).

Either of those guys would be better for you. I would not put Marshall above any of the guys your boy mentions.

Some of the people on here might overestimate what constitutes an ‘average corner,’ but Marshall is at least that—when he wants to be.

Marshall is a decent corner.

He’d be an excellent nickel back, and a solid #2 at times. He has regressed the past couple of years it seems though. Then again, we in Carolina are pretty tough on our corners. We think Gamble is overpaid, Lucas was soft, and Marshall was a dick. Captain’s our favorite atm, but he might end up getting the “too short” label soon.

During one of the games...

Where Munnerlyn deflected a ball in the EZ in an incredible jump, the commentators said he had a 39 inch vertical. Of course, we know how reliable those guys are and to take everything they say with a grain of salt. But either number is impressive. And he’s a hard hitter who can flatten guys out. Cap’n Crunch is awesome.

Combine that with an aggressive nature

and that’s why we’re letting Marshall go, and not discussing the possibility of Pat Peterson further at #1. We really only need to draft some competition for Robert Mclain at the nickel.

Marshall is more fit to be a Nickel back

No way he is better than Grimes and Cromartie, and no way he is going to be a top 5 corner. But he is serviceable.

by Smitty89 on Feb 9, 2011 4:52 PM EST reply actions

Actually, Marshall is a pretty solid CB...

when he can play a cover 0 or cover 1 scheme. The problem has come in the last few years in the fact that the Panthers have gone to a Tampa 2/Cover 2 defense and Marshall just isn’t good at zone coverage. He drops receivers too soon at times, or follows receivers out of his zone and allows another receiver to be open when they enter where he should be.

He’d be a great addition to a team that can utilize his strengths, but zone coverage isn’t one of them.

he got pushed around a lot this year though, even when manning up on guys...

that would be my biggest worry with him; he should be much more physical given his physical specs (for a CB anyways…since they’re not typically all that big in comparison to others). Someone further up also harped on his lack of sticking to tackling fundamentals, which led to a lot of whiffs this year….

He’s just too inconsistent to be depended on for a starting spot; he would be a great pickup for a nickel corner if he didn’t have douchebag numero uno as his agent….

Sweet

Very informative comments. What it sounds like is he has two major problems, consistency and a massive ego. The later makes it very difficult for the former to improve, thus giving him a big contract would do nothing but actually confirm his thinking that he’s that good. And being that someone will probably give him a sweet deal, I just hope it isn’t us.

Great, insightful feedback by the way. Hope your off season goes well. Seems like the team has a strong foundation, and you guys were plenty hospitable and knowledgeable, which I appreciate. If only I didn’t witness your team knock us out of the NFC Championship… though we were running on fumes at that point anyway, and someone had to do it. Thanks for the info.
