Perhaps we can now put the rumors to rest about whether Clausen was playing injured or not through the 2010 season. According to Darin Gantt via Twitter the rookie QB had a 'minor procedure with Dr. Robert Anderson, who is considered the pre-eminent orthopaedic surgeon in North Carolina. Gantt went on to say that Clausen had a follow-up with the doctor yesterday.
Given that it was Dr. Anderson I think it's safe to say we can rule out an ingrown toenail, or any other minor issue that I'm sure someone would bring up in a tongue and cheek comment. I got confirmation from Gantt that it was Cluasen's foot, not his toe as some have postulated.
Many have suggested that perhaps Clausen's lackluster performance in 2010 could be partly contributed to an injury. While I'm not ready to absolve him of all responsibility and put it on his foot, it's undeniable that Clausen played more 'gingerly' as the season went on, and any kind of injury, now matter how small would support this hypothesis. Time will tell if any injury hampered Clausen in 2010, but I think we should all hope that it did because it would likely mean we'll see a better version of the QB in 2011, and that's before we get to the new coaches.
