Eagles Coach Andy Reid opened up a little on his reasons for firing new Panthers DC Sean McDermott. If you were of the opinion that McDermott was essentially a fall guy for the Eagles season ending flop this interview isn't going to change your mind:
I love Sean McDermott,” Reid said. “I think he’s a heck of a football coach. I did what I felt was best for the Philadelphia Eagles and for Sean McDermott.”
Put the emphasis on 'Sean McDermott'. Reid's comments bolster the notion that not only was McDermott being unfairly compared to late Eagles coaching legend Jim Johnson but that even worse, McDermott would be better off getting out from Johnson's legacy by leaving Philly. Reid never offers even the slightly criticism of McDermott. Quite the opposite actually:
“This kid worked his tail off here. Everybody who’s seen him knows he’s very, very talented.”
So why fire him?
“These are decisions I have to make,” Reid said.
So he works his butt off and is an extremely talented coach. I can see why the Eagles parted with him [sarcasm].Here's the closest he came to criticizing McDermott:
“That was a situation that wouldn’t have been an easy situation for anybody, let alone for Sean,” Reid said. “But Sean’s innately tough. He persevered through it.”
So the 38 yr old coach struggled a bit under the pressure of being compared to a local legend? Who would have guessed?
I honestly think this will be one of Rivera's marquee hires of the group...and it fell right into Rivera's lap. We should all be excited about the potential McDermott brings to the Panthers knowing he's going to work his butt off to build a top 5 defense.
