Ron Rivera addresses media at the NFL Combine

Not so much an update, but rather the validation and solidification of much we already knew from Carolina Panthers head coach, who spoke to the media at the NFL combine. The below quotes are courtesy of both Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, and Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network, via Twitter.

Rivera told the media there were '8-10 players' under consideration for the #1 overall pick, specifically mentioning the quarterback and defensive line positions. He went on to say that the Panthers intend to bring Auburn QB Cam Newton to Charlotte for a private visit.

Speaking about Steve Smith he reiterated that he wants Smitty to look at what the Carolina Panthers are doing and see if it's a good fit for him. This ostensibly achieves two goals: It's puts the ball in Smith's court regarding his future, it also shows a high level of respect for the Panthers' WR by not holding him under contract against his will.

Not much else from Rivera this morning, and while there's not a lot new to hear what we did hear reinforced much of what we had heard from other sources. Let the fun and games of the combine begin!

Update: Per Person, Rivera said there were a 'few' QBs in that list of 8-10 players they were considering. This should give us some idea of how important QB is to the Panthers if multiple spaces on that list of 8-10 are quarterbacks.
