Panthers New Coaching Staff Inherits Several Player Projects
With every coaching change comes hope for the future. That hope is never more present than in the players deemed 'projects', players with tons of potential yet unrealized when it counts. The Panthers have a few of these projects, some in critical starting positions and others in key back-up roles. Whether these players realize their potential or not will hinge on how well this new staff coaches them up. So are they up to the task? Let's take a look at who might finally realize all that untapped potential:
Whether the Panthers pick up a vet QB to lead the team in the immediate future or not new QB coach Mike Shula has to figure out if Clausen can develop into even a serviceable back-up, much less a franchise quarterback. Based on 2010's results Shula might have the biggest project on the team. So can the kid from Alabama get through to a California golden boy? Shula will bring a whole new approach as compared to former Panther QB coach Rip Scherer; an approach that will hopefully allow this 2nd year QB to realize his potential.
We've heard the kid has learned all three WR positions and is surprisingly smart. So will that translate to the field in 2011? New WR coach Fred Graves has done it before:
Armed with a reputation as a stickler for precision, Fred Graves is challenged with developing one of the NFL's youngest wide receiving corps. However, the task is not unlike the one he successfully met as wide receivers coach for the Tennessee Titans for the past four seasons.
Taking over Tennessee's wide receivers in 2007, Graves took an unproven group of wide outs and groomed them into reliable targets. Justin Gage emerged and tied for the team lead with a career-high 55 catches. The next year, Gage evolved into a big-play threat, ranking third in the NFL with an average of 19.1 yards per reception.
In 2009, the Titans selected Kenny Britt in the first round of the NFL Draft and added Nate Washington in free agency. Graves helped Britt compile a team-high 701 yards to become the first rookie to lead the team in receiving yards since 1995. In Washington's first season as a full-time starter in the NFL, he established career bests for catches and touchdowns.
Graves instead inherits three 2nd year WRs that, hopefully with his tutelage, becomes the core of the WR position for years to come.
DE Everette Brown
New DC Sean McDermott will begin in earnest deciding which of his young DEs will be the guy opposite Charles Johnson. I'm sure he's looking for a Trent Cole clone; a three down DE that can shoot the designed gaps with speed. Is Everette Brown that guy? Brown was considered a tweener when drafted by the Panthers; not quite big enough to play DE three downs but too big to play LB and drop into coverage. If Brown continues to add weight this offseason similar to last he could be a serious force for the Panthers off the edge (or from anywhere for that matter) and play a key role in McDermott's pressure defense.
DE/LB Eric Norwood
Drafted into a similar role as Brown, Norwood might instead be destined to play LB. Even if that happens he will still specialize in bringing pressure, whether that means he has his hand in the ground or he's standing up. LB coach Warren Belin is making his NFL debut. Fitting Norwood into a spot on the defense will be one of his first challenges.
DT Corvey Irvin
With all the talk of DT being the weakest unit on the team it's easy to overlook the potential in Irvin. The former 3rd round pick is hoping he can finally launch his career after two lost seasons. At 6'3" 300lbs Irvin has the speed to be the one-gap penetrator the Panthers defensive line coach Eric Washington is sure to be looking for. The question is whether Irvin's knee is finally 100%.
A top priority for the Panther offense is finding a three down TE. Could he already be on the roster? TE coach Pete Hoener will have to make a quick evaluation of Barnidge because the Panthers brass may not want to risk waiting another season to see if Barnidge can rise to role needed. Based on what I've seen in prior preseason I think he deserves a chance.
This 6'5" 330 lb mauler would seem to have all the tools to be the Panthers missing piece at RG. For get the injury prior to the 2010 season; its what is going on between the ears that seems to be the problem. Will the 59 yr old coaching veteran be able to shape him up? This is probably the one project I'm not so confident will be successful.

I'll throw some out there though!
Armanti Edwards – Rod Chudzinski had Josh Cribbs in Cleveland, and according to quotes from Rivera, he wants Chud to incorporate Armanti in a similar way.
Mike Goodson – San Diego had Darren Sproles as their scat-back. Both guys are good receivers out of the backfield, so I’d expect to see Goodson used more.
Gary Barnidge – Chud is a renowned TE guru, so can he turn Barnidge into the guy we thought he’d be coming out of college?

I don't think Goodson is considered a project anymore.
He seems to have it all straightened out.

Yeah, except for that little fumbling thing...

Guy, McClain, Stanford, Ware, Martin, Pike, Moore, and Jackson ...
… all big honking projects. Some may have forgotten, but Hilee Taylor is still on the team. Also a project. Most projects don’t work out, so we might as well cut the whole list down to about three or four guys, ‘cause that’s all who will play any significant amount of time.
stuff 'bout stuff.
Everette Brown
I just don’t think this guy can ever be an every down 4-3 DE. I think he would be better served as an OLB with a team that runs a 3-4 scheme. That is just one other reason i could see us taking Bowers…I would love a rotation of Hardy, Johnson, and Bowers creating mayhem off the edges. I also see breakout seasons on the horizon for Norwood and Edwards…
But then we couldn't say we have a "Hardy Brown Johnson" anymore /jk

Keep Ed and draft Nick, and you've got a Fairley Brown Double-sized Johnson
(sounds more like something from McDonalds, though, than what you were referencing.)
Or someones wang.

A black mans wang lol
The thing I REALLY hate is that the Bengals will probably end up taking Cam Newton at #2. - SexBengals Fan
He is a Tampa-2 DE.
That’s it.

nice analysis
Give This Guy More Snaps: DT Andre Neblett (+3.9 in 152 snaps)
Carolina went into the year with a shortage of defensive tackles and as the year wore on that meant that Neblett got some playing time. The big rookie had some bad moments (giving up an offside penalty in his first snap versus Atlanta in Week 17) but looked like a run stuffer with some sizeable (pun intended) potential. If you don’t believe us, watch him go one-on-one versus Maurkice Pouncey or Todd McClure, and how many times Neblett he was able to collapse a running lane.
I know. Imagine that. Is it possible we have our big run stuffer already...
and he’s just going into his 2nd year? What was left of my mind has now truly been blown.

And Mike, you should check out what they say about Anderson (below)
Moving On Up: LB James Anderson (+1.3 to +14.1)
Anderson was by no means terrible in 2009, but he had the look of a guy who would do a solid job and no more. The type of guy that could come in and not let you down, but not someone you’d expect to make plays. And more plays. And then more plays. But that is what he did as he blitzed, blew up and breezed by blockers on his way to a real coming out year. Led the team in tackles, was second in sacks and graded in the green in all areas. The Panthers know how to make good linebackers.

Those are probrobly the most exciing guys to see develop
Irvin, Robinson, and Barnidge i think are all guys who are forgotten and need to step up this year. otherwise they could be on the street pretty soon. Brown and NOrwood are both very interesting. i want to see whats going to happen to them and how they each will be used in the future
I'm most excited...
to see what Robinson and Otah can do when they are back in the fold. The right side of our o-line could go from below-average to excellent very quickly. Does anybody know what these “between the ears” problems are? I’ve heard that a few times, but I am unsure as to what they entail. Not trying to be a prick, just curious!
Showed up to camp overweight and out of shape. He obviously hadn't been working
thru the offseason to improve his conditioning. And, he was slapped with a 4 game suspension for drug use (already served last year while on IR). I don’t know what drug was found.
