Mike Mayock's Updated Position Rankings: Fairley Not Top DT

Mike Mayock updated his position rankings today. Needless to say that there is plenty to discuss. We have a surprise choice for #2 QB, the #1 ranked DT is not Nick Fairley, and a couple of Badgers have a made some gains.

Update by Jaxon: I didn't catch the significance of this at the outset but think its worthy of front page discussion. I tend to listen to Mike Mayock so if he's saying Dareus is slightly ahead of Fairley I would like to know what that is based on. I imagine its partly that Fairley has really only had one good great year at the college level.

Forget about Blaine Gabbert and Cam Newton - Jake Locker clearly can do no wrong in the eyes of most scouts. Locker is #2 behind Gabbert with Newton at #3 despite all Locker's underwhelming 2010 season and mediocre performance at the Senior Bowl. Mayock has in the past spoken highly of Andy Dalton's passing skills and his smarts. An ordinary Senior Bowl has not stopped Mayock from ranking him ahead of Ponder and Kaepernick as the #5 guy in the draft.

Marcel Dareus is the #1 DT ahead of Nick Fairley. I think there are only 2 people on CSR who would give Dareus the edge over Fairley and I am one of them. Dareus is known for playing the end in Alabama's 3-4 defense but it looks it appears as if Dareus would be far more effective playing DT in a 4-3 defense in the NFL.

JJ Watt as #2 DE is not a surprise to me and I would not be surprised if he becomes the #1 DE on a lot of boards - the guy is built a lot like Julius Peppers and he is smart. Lance Kendricks might be the guy for the Panthers if we are looking for a TE in the 3rd round - he is #2 behind Kyle Rudolph.

So...any thoughts?
