Ricky Proehl is on board! Hired as an 'offensive consultant' by Panthers
While it's not the vaulted position of WR coach we originally had Proehl pegged for, at least he's on board. According to Panthers.com the former Carolina Panther will serve as 'offensive consultant' primarily working with Fred Graves and the wide receivers.
This marks Proehl's first professional foray into coaching. Previously he has been working privately with NFL hopefuls at his 'Proehlific Park' sports complex in Greensboro, NC. This move should further solidify, and satiate #89 as Smith now how his WR coach of choice and a former collegue who he has immense respect for.

Congrats to Ricky!
Congrats to him for getting his first ever coaching gig, and to us too for getting someone of his caliber on the staff. I hope he imparts a lot of his knowledge on our young WRs.

just continuing the “Bust James’s balls with editorial remarks” trend :)
Seriously though, if these kids can’t learn from a guy with 30 years of WR coaching experience, and another guy who was essentially a mentor WR during his playing days AND has been continuing to coach players afterwards, then we need to look for new prospects lol. I doubt we at LEAST see some improvement from the youngins, considering they’re going to be learning from a guy who couldn’t rely on physical tools to be a good WR, but had to excel at the fundamentals of being a WR in order to stay in the league. Rest assured, he’ll make sure they know how to catch a damn ball lol
lol
You literally caught the article in the first 15 seconds of publishing… I very quickly changed that one!

hahaha I clicked back from reading another article and boom! there it was...
It’s been happening a lot lately for me actually lol
This is great.
I don’t want to sell Ricky short with this comment, but it seems like the team understands that it is in their best interests to keep #89. Why do so many people thing we should trade him, and where can I get whatever you all are smoking?
Let me hold about tree-fiddy?
Yea, where can I get what you guys are smoking?
cause it’s dry as a desert in my neck of the woods right now :(
Now join Ricky and Armanti at the hip for the next 6 months...

SSSSSSSSSWWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!
How many SuperBowl rings does that give us on the staff now. I don’t have time to look it up but Rivera and Proehl have three combined and Proehl had two more apperances(once with the Panthers). With all this proven success we are bringing in on the staff we at least have guys that have been to the big show and know what it takes to get there.
Superbowl XLVII Champs HELLZ YEAH
IT AIN'T SIZE OF THE DOG IN THE FIGHT BUT THE SIZE OF THE FIGHT IN THE DOG

Amendment to the "Rules and Regulations"
Rule #81: The game must change for 89. 89 dictates the way everyone else plays on the field. 89 doesn’t take lessons from anyone, because no one is as great as 89! However, 89 realizes when he is in the presence of greatness and is not beyond listening to the suggestions of his mentors, especially 81.

This will have to be passed by the CSR Governors, however, I believe this amendment to be a good one.

Did anybody else read the article from Brad Biggs
The Carolina Panthers interviewed Ricky Proehl about becoming the team’s wide receivers coach and elected to hire a more seasoned assistant in Fred Graves.
But they’ve found a spot for Proehl too. The club announced this afternoon that he will serve as an offensive consultant, working primarily with Graves and the team’s wide receivers.
Proehl spent three of his 17 seasons in the NFL playing in Carolina and he played in college at Wake Forest. He resides in North Carolina, so it’s an easy situation for him to handle without the rigors of being a full-time coach.
Now, if the Panthers can just find someone to throw their receivers the ball.

Brad Biggs covers the Bears for the Chicago Tribune
If I were a reporter from Chicago covering the Bears with a piss poor QB like Cutler, I don’t think I would be taking shots at anybody elses QB situation. But thats just me and the fact that I think Cutler is a world class waste of good oxygen doesn’t help my opinion either.
IT AIN'T SIZE OF THE DOG IN THE FIGHT BUT THE SIZE OF THE FIGHT IN THE DOG
Cutler isn’t total crap, but I would not consider him anywhere with the likes of Breesus, Rodgers, Manning, Rivers, etc. That being said, I wouldn’t want him as our QB either.

I'd sure as hell take him.
He’s not in that upper echelon, but he’s a hell of a lot better than what we had last year.

I'm not sure I love his personality but...
He’s definitely not a piss poor QB. His career QB rating is 84.3. While that number isn’t going to melt anyone’s face off, it’s still respectable. Four years in a row he’s thrown over 3,000 passing yards and 20+ touchdowns. Considering our QB play last year, we don’t have a single leg to stand on when it comes to criticizing other teams’ QBs… unless it’s Big Ben. I’ll give you a hall pass on that one if you’d like ;)
I’m not saying our QBs can’t develop because I believe they can. We’ll see if Jimmy is given a second shot this year. Hopefully they can provide some meaningful competition for him (not a rookie, please).

Based on the stats ol’ Jimmeh threw up there, I wouldn’t call Cutler “piss poor”.
Compared to the Jimmer, Cutler’s freaking Joe Montana.

At the moment, five. But that could change at any time.
In case you’re scoring at home, I think my favorite is The Jimmer.

Extremely happy to have #81 back!
I was just watching the Super Bowl XXXVIII highlights on Hulu AGAIN (can never get enough of that game – even if it didn’t end the way I wanted). So good to see a former player come back as a coach.

The biggest winner initially is Edwards
You couldn’t find a better mentor on how to play the slot than Proehl. If Edwards doesn’t make the splash that everyone here is hoping for, it won’t be for a lack of coaching and mentoring.
I’m extremely excited to have Proehl back with the Panthers. Hopefully this leads to bigger and better things for both our young WRs and Proehl’s coaching career.
OUTSTANDING
This is one the Best route runners this team ever had. I’m so glad to se him back. Great add!!!

Love this news! How many times did RP come up with that crucial catch to keep a drive going? Or that clutch TD when everyone else had mad coverage? It was always a good thing to hear his name. Some things never change…
"The concept of absurdity is something I'm attracted to."- David Lynch
that was basically his MO all 17 years
what he lacked in physical tools (I believe he was drafted at 6-0, 190?), he made up for by making sure he had the fundamentals of being a WR down to a T…this guy has future coach written all over him, and now he gets to start what could be a very promising coaching career.
Poor James...
Smith now how his WR coach or choice and a former collegue
We need to get you an editor
Now only if we could hire Wesley Walls as a TE Ast. or something in that line.
Coach Rivera, may we please have one of these FA Nnamdi Asomugha,Jonathan Joseph or Champ Bailey
Welcome back Ricky!!
I am so excited about having Ricky Proehl back with the Panthers! And I haven’t given up on Jimmy, yet. I still have hope that he’ll find a way to get the ball to our receivers, especially Smitty! Now, if only the CBA could get resolved. I must admit that I am think the season will start a little late…8-{
Carolina Panthers & Cat Scratch Reader fan who also happens to be a grandma.
I won't try to change you, if you don't try to change me
We have a great coaching staff...
Cant wait till the Draft…then training camp…oh wait the CBA… dang little fockers, please work something out. If theres no football next year, that means we get Andrew Luck. Maybe he knew something Panthers fans didnt, such an architect.
hmmm…Andrew Luck eh. We do really need a QB, but I think we need to give Jimmy another year. I would much rather play football this upcoming year than settle for Luck in 2012. Fairley, Bowers, Green or a trade should improve our 2-14 record. Plus, our coaching staff is coming along pretty sweet! Congrats Ricky!!!!!!!!!

What do you think
of trading back, and instead of a 2nd this year, we get a first rounder next year? If we did that with Buffalo there’s a good chance we could still get Luck. That would give Jimmy another year to play, if there’s a season, and if we still don’t think he’ll be better than Luck, we could trade him.
I actually like this idea
If we can pull it off, which obviously would be tough in this draft. Even if Buffalo has a decent season, it would give us two first rounders as bait, and we could throw in a 2013 first. It would probably take more than that to move up to Luck, though.

Great news!
I very much look forward to seeing Proehl work himself up through the coaching ranks over the next several years.
